This invention relates to new and useful improvements in sprinklers and the primary object of Vthe present invention is to provide a sprinkler including novel and improved means for selectively discharging a iluid from the same in the form of any desired segment of a circle.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide a lawn sprinkler includ-ing a stand and novel andimproved means for pivotally adjusting the sprinkler at selected positions relative to the stand.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a lawn sprinkler all parts of which are quickly and readily disassembled, facilitating the convenient cleaning or replacement of parts.
A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a lawn sprinkler that is simple and practical in construction, strong and reliable in use, neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the present lawn sprinkler; and
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of Figure 1, and with parts of the device broken away and shown in section.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein, for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral I represents a substantially U-shaped stand or frame generally comprising a pair of spaced parallel bearing legs I2. The web portion of the stand is bent upwardly to form a horizontally disposed pivot portion I4 and downwardly and outwardly inclined side portions I6.
Pivotally mounted en the pivot portion I4 is a bearing member or block I8 having an integral, internally threaded hose engaging nipple 2 8 at one end.
A threaded bore 22 is provided in the block I8 and adjustably receives the threaded shank portion 24 of an eye member 2:6 that may be adjusted for selective pivotal positions of the block I8 relative to the pivot portion I4.
Removably engaging an internally threaded recess 28 in the upper end of the block I8 is the reduced threaded end 30 of a spacer member 34.
The numeral 36 represents a cylinder or tubuaclaims. (c1. a99- 19)l 2 lar body that isprovided with an integral closure 38 at its outer end. The inner end 40 of this body`36 is externally threaded to removably engage a threaded socket 42 at the outer end of the spacer member 34.
A group ofrsucce'ssively spaced axially and radially displaced outlet apertures 44 are provided in the surface of body 36 and are selectively opposed. by the annular anged portion46 of a resilient cup-like piston 48 that is workable in the body. Disposed on opposite sides of the piston 48 is a, pair of wearing plates 50 that are swivelled, as at 52, together with the piston on the inner end of a screw-threaded rod 54 that is adjustably mounted in the closure 38.
Removably secured to the outer end of the rod 54, by the use of a screw or the like 56, is a knurled iinger-receiving disk 58 that may be employed for selective adjustment of the piston within the body 36.
A group of apertures 44 include four equal and separate sides of the ybody 36 and are referred to more specifically by the numerals 60, 62, 64 and 66.
In practical use of the device, a water hose is connected to the nipple 20, so that uid conducted by the hose will enter an inlet bore 6B in the block I8, pass into the inlet bore l0 provided in the spacer member 34, and hence will enter the body 36. If it is desirable to eject Water from the body 36 on only one side, namely, from the series of apertures 60. the rod 54 is adjusted so that the lower edges of the ange 46 will be adjacent the upper aperture of the series 60. For ejecting water from two sides of the body to circumscribe a half circle, the piston is adjusted so that the lower extremities of its flange 46 are disposed adjacent the upper extremity of the series` of apertures 62, and fluid will be discharged from the series of apertures 60 and 62.
Obviously, by similarly adjusting the piston to the upper aperture of the series 64. fluid will be ejected from the body on three sides thereof, and by raising the piston to bear adjacent closure 38. fluid will be sprayed from all sides of the body.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, it is believed that a clear understanding of vthe device will be quite apparent to those skilled. in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A lawn sprinkler comprising a stand, a hose receiving member pivotally mounted on said stand, means for adjusting said member at selected pivotal positions relative to said stand, a spacer element removably carried by said member and disposed perpendicularly thereto, an inlet bore provided in said hose receiving member, a
further'inlet bore provided in said spacer ele- A ment communicating with said first-mentioned bore at right angles thereto, a tubular body removablyv carried by and eoplanar with said spacer element, a group of successively spaced axially and radially displaced apertures upon the surface of the'body, aipiston slidably mounted in said body and including 'a flanged portion bearing against the inner periphery of said body'for uncovering some of said apertures on one side of said body, and means for selectively adjusting said piston within said body.
2. The combination of claim l wherein said means Vfor adjusting said piston within said head includes an adjustable .rod carried by said body and operatively connected to said piston.
3. The combination of claim 2 wherein said rod is swiveled to said piston.
4. A lawn sprinkler comprising a tubular body having a threaded opening at one end, a fluid inlet at the opposite end of said body, a plurality of successively spaced axially and radially displaced apertures upon the surface of the body. a piston having a resilient flanged portion received in said body for uncovering some of the apertures, a rod threaded in said opening, means swivelling said rod to said piston, and finger-receiving means for actuating said rod, said piston shielding said rod from liquid in said body and the resilient flanged portion of said piston bear- 'Ning against the inner periphery of said body.
