(o1 .12e 2s) This invention comprises novel and useful improvements in a portable grille and more specifically pertains to'a portable folding camp stove which may be compactly collapsed into a portable package resembling a suitcase and may be quickly opened and assembled to provide a lightweight camp stove and grille.

The principal object of this invention is to provide a folding camp stove which shall be of lightweight construction, readily formed of sheet metal, may be easily assembled or collapsed as desired, and is provided with improved means for securing the parts in their assembled positions. -An important featu'reof the invention'resides in the provision of an open sided, rectangular main section, having pivot closures which may be opened to form the back of a stove, together with side panels pivoted to the ends of the closures to form side walls of the stove, and wherein improved reinforcing means are provided for holding'the article in its assembled position'and serving as supports for a grille or the like.

Yet another feature of the invention resides in improved means for anchoring or firmly maintaining the stove in its assembled position upon the ground.

These, together with various ancillary features and objects of the invention which will later become apparent as the following description proceeds, are attained by this device, a preferred embodiment of which has been illustrated by way of example only in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a preferred embodiment of the invention in its assembled or erected position, ready for use as a camp stove;

Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the device, in its fully collapsed position, ready for transportation;

Figure 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the stove as erected in Figure 1, and is taken substantially upon the plane indicated by the'section line 33 of Figure Figure 4 is a fragmentary perspective view, upon an enlarged scale, of a corner construction of the assembled device, and indicates the upper right hand corner of the device as shown in Figure 1;

Figure 5 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially upon=the plane of section line 55 of Figure 3;

' Figure 6 is a perspective view of a grille plate which may be used with the device; I

Referring now more specifically to the accompanying drawings, wherein like numerals designate similar parts throughoutthe various views, the numeral I0 is employed to designate generally the main section of the inventionwhich main section consists of a rec'ztangulangopen ended member which forms the main portion'oi the device, and which is provided with parallel sidewalls l2 and end walls H. To the rear side wall I2, there is pivotally attached as by hinges H5, at the upper and loweredges thereof, a pair of closure or cover members I 8 and 20 which form the closures for the rectangular main section when the latter is collapsed as shown in Figure 2 and which form the back upper and lowerwalls of the device when assembled as shown in Figure 1 to form a camp stove.

At substantially their mid-points, the outer edges of the upper and lower back panels l8 and 23, which are opposite from their hinged edges, are provided with openings or slots 22 and 24', respectively, for detachably receiving a bail or hand grip member 26, which as shown in Figure 2 is inserted in these apertures to form a handle for. carrying the device when in its collapsed position. The handle is of course removed by simply spreading the side armsthereof, to cause the bail to release'from theapertures f22 and 24, when it is desiredto open the stove into its erected position as shown in Figure 1.

The upper back wall member I8 is provided at its opposite ends with pairs of lugs 28, see Figure 4 in particular, which constitute hinges by means of which upper side panels 30 and 32 are hingedly connected to the panel l8. It should be noted that the side panels 30 and 32 are'of similar construction, and are provided with notches 34 in their edges adjacent the hinge-lugs 28, for accommodating the eyes of the hinge lugs therein, these notches being of sufficient length to permit a relative transverse movement of the panel 30 upon the panel I8, in a vertical plane as viewed inFigures 1 and 4. Rigidly attached to the edge of the panels 30 and 32, as by welding or thelike, is a hinge pin 36 which overlies the notches 34 and is slidably and rotatably received in the eye of the hinge lug 23i Thus, b'y reason of the dimensions of the notch and of the hinge pin eye, a limited transverse motion of the panels 36 and 32 upon the back wall 18 is permitted, while a folding action of these panels upon the back wall I8 is also permissible as shown by the arrows 38.

The arrangement is such that the panels 3% and 32 are slid into longitudinal alinement with the back wall 18 when it is desired to fold the panels together for collapsing of the device into the position shown in Figure 2; and whereby when the device is opened into its open position as shown in Figure 1, the panels 30 and 32 may be displaced downwardly by reason of the clearance in the notch 34, whereby these panels are received within the upper edges of the main section as will be seen by reference to Figure 3. By this means, once the stove has been erected, the upper end panels 30 are prevented from opening movement beyond the end walls 14 of the stove.

Torelease the end panels from their erected position as shown in Figures 1 and 3, it is merely necessary vto slide these end panels vertically upward upon the vertical back panel l8, until the lower edges of the panels 39 and 32 have cleared theupper edges of the main section H), whereupon the panels may be folded together and when the cover member l8 forming the back wall of the stove is folded inwardly down upon the main section ID, these panels will be within the compartment of the main section Ill while I8 constitutes a snug closure for the same as shown in Figure 2.

A further reinforcing means is provided for positively locking the upper end panels and 22 into their erected position. For this purpose, the end. walls [4 of the main section are provided with suitable brackets 46 having vertically disposed bores or passages which constitute keepers for detachably receiving the lower ends of the reinforcing rods 42, shown in Figure 8.

These reinforcing rods have a hooked or bent portion 44 at their upper ends which is detachably received in notches 46 formed in the upper edge of the side or end panels 36 and 32, so that when the notches 46 receive the hooks 44, the

lower end of the rod 42 will be received in the keepers 40, thereby positively locking the end panels and 32 against pivotal movement upon their vertical hinges 28 and 36.

Likewise formed upon the rod 42 upon opposite sides thereof from the supporting hook 44, are a pair of longitudinally and vertically spaced supporting hooks 48 and 50 which are selectively employed to support various grilles or other heating and supporting members with which the device is provided, and as set forth hereinafter.

Formed at any convenient point in one of the panels such as 32, is an aperture 52 which is ialined with the lower end of a vertically disposed slot 54 formed in the other panel 30, whereby a spit 56 may be rotatably and removably supported above the grille and grate of the device.

The end walls M of the section ID are provided with suitable shoulders 58 for detachably receiving a grille plate 66 therein, this grille being shown more clearly in Figure 5.

A'pair of lower side panels 62 and 64 are terminally hinged as by the hinge pins 65, notches 68 and hinge lugs 10 carried by the bottom back wall-plate 20, and as indicated in Figures 1 and 3. However, the lower plates are not constructed for relative lateral sliding movement upon their supporting back wall plate, the notches 68 being of substantially the same length as the hinge lugs Ill, so as to permit only folding movement of the lower end plates 62 and 64 thereon. Moreover, the lower plates 62 and 64 are mounted adjacent the ends of the lower back wall plate 20, whereby in their open position they will substantially underlie the end walls M of the main section Ill, to assist the lower back wall 20 in supporting the same.

To prevent relative displacement of the lower end panels 62 and 64, from their supporting position, the latter are provided with keeper brackets 12 which slidably receive the pointed anchoring pins 14, see Figure 9, which may be pushed downwardly into the ground as indicated in Figure 1 to anchor the ends of the bottom end panels 62 and 64 to the ground.

Further bracing and reinforcing action upon these end panels is provided by pairs of supporting lugs 16 which are formed upon the inner surfaces of the panels 62 and 64, and which receive a grate 18 of any suitable construction, which grate is supported by the lugs, and rigidly secured thereto to rigidly secure the end panels 62 and 64, the grate I8 and the lower back panel 20 into a rigid assembly.

Received in the upper compartment of the stove, above the grille 60, are a pair of grille plates and 82, see Figures 6 and 7, which may be selectively positioned upon either of the sets of support hooks 48 and 50, as desired. The plate 80 may be provided with a cut-out'portion 84 which serves to permit boiling of liquids in containers placed thereover, while the plate 82 may be employed for cooking as desired.

It will thus be seen that there "has been provided a stove in which the container itself constitutes the main section of the stove and in which the covers of the container may be unfolded to provide upper and lower back walls for the stove, with the end walls of the stove being hinged to the two back walls and 'folda-ble into the interior of the container formed by the main section. Further, all of the attachments and auxiliaries of the stove may be stored within the main section 10 when the stove is collapsed. Finally, improved means have been provided for securely locking the stove in its extended or expanded position, and this with a minimum of dificulty.

From the foregoing, it is believed that the construction, mode of operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art after a consideration of the foregoing specification and accompanying drawings, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, but all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to falling within the scope of the appended claims.

Having described the invention, what claimed as new is:

1. A portable folding camp stove comprising an open rectangular main section having par.- allel side and end walls, covers for said main section hinged to opposite edges of a side wall and pivotal into alignment with said side wall to form upper and lower back walls of a stove, end panels terminally hinged to each of said upper and lower back walls and swingable to form side walls for a stove, and means to rigidly secure the upper end panels to the end walls of said main section, bolt keepers on the inner surfaces of the end walls of said main section,-

rods engaging said upper end panels and slidable in said keepers for locking said panels to said main section, notches in the upper edges of said upper end panels, hooks on said rods engageable in said notches.

2. The combination of claim 1 includin bracket hooks on said rods opposite said first hooks, and a grill supported on said bracket hooks.

3. A portable folding camp stove comprising a rectangular main section having parallel side and end Walls, a cover for said main section hinged to the upper edge of one of said side walls and pivotal into alignment with said side wall to form a back wall, end panels hingedly connected to said cover and swingable to form side walls for said stove, bolt keepers on said end walls of said main section, rods received in said keepers and having hooks on the upper ends thereof overlying the upper edge of said end panels to limit downward movement of said rods, and bracket hooks on said rods opposite said panel engaging hooks, and a grill supported on said bracket hooks.

A portable folding camp stove comprising a rectangular main section having parallel side and end walls, a cover for said main section hinged to the upper edge of one of said side walls and pivotal into alignment with said side wall to form a back wall, end panels hingedly connected to said cover and swingable to form side walls for said stove, bolt keepers on said REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
