3 Claims. (Cl. 15-228) This invention relates to amop assembly, and more particularly to an assembly in which there is a disposable mop pad. i
In our prior application, Serial No. 418,012, filed March 23, 1954, and now Patent No. 2,764,774, there is disclosed and claimed a mop assembly comprising a substantially circular head swivelly. secured to a handle, the head having an inwardly'and downwardly inclined peripheral flange, a substantially circular flexible mop pad backing member seated within the peripheral flange and substantially engaging the bottom surface of the head, a mop pad carried by the backing member, a plunger element mounted on the head and movable downwardly through an aperture formed in the backing member to engage the backing member and push the backing member out of the flange, and spring means biasing the plunger element upwardly.
In the mop assembly of the present invention a head and backing member of a different structure is employed, and the spring biased plunger element is eliminated.
An object of the present invention is to provide a mop assembly in which there is a mop head enabling the ready attachment of a disposal mop pad thereto.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a mop assembly in which the disposable mop pad may be detached from the head by application of a manually directed pressure to the pad.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a mop assembly which is of simple structure, commercially feasible, and highly eflicient in action.
These and other objects and advantages of the present invention will be fully apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the annexed drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the disposable mop of the mop assembly according to the present invention in the initial stage of being mounted upon the head of the assembly,
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the parts of Figure 1, but with the mop in the final stage of being mounted upon the head,
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the mop assembly, with parts broken away, according to the present invention,
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 44 of .Figure 3,
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 4, and
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken on the line 6-6 of Figure 5.
Referring in greater detail to the drawing, in which like numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views, the mop assembly of the present invention comprises a handle 10 and a head 11. Attaching means is carried by one face of the head 11 and consists in a pair of L- shaped brackets 12 and 13 arranged with one leg of each secured to or formed integrally with the face of the head 11 and with the other legs spaced apart from each other and projecting perpendicularly to the head face. Detachmovement of the handle 16 with respect to the head The head 11 is flat and has a pair of side edges arranged in parallel relation and a pair of opposed and downwardly extending and inwardly extending flange portions 16 and 17 are adjacent the other face of the head opposite to the brackets 12 and 13 are dependingly carried by the side edges of the head 11. A skirt 18 connects the adjacent ends of the flange portions 16 and 17 at one end thereof and another skirt 19 connects the other ends of the flange portions 16 and 17 together. The skirts 18 and 19 depend from the same side of the face of the head 11 as do the flange portions 16 and 17.
A flexible backing member 20 substantially engages the face of the head 11 between the flange portions 16 portions 16 and 17. A mop pad 21 shaped to sheet form extends over the entire area of and is secured to the face of the backing member 20 opposite to the head 11.
The portions of the head 11 adjacent each end of the flange portions 16 and 17 are semicircular in shape and the edge portions of the backing member 20 are longer than the flange portions 16 and 17 and engage the adjacent portions of the skirts 18 and 19, as at 22 and 23 in Figure 5, to retain the backing member 20 against lateral and longitudinal movement with respect to the head 11.
The mop pad 21 has portions adjacent its perimeter projecting beyond the boundary of the backing member 20. The head 11 is formed with a pair of spaced apertures 24 and 25 arranged centrally of the circular portions of the head 11 through which a manually directed pressure may be applied to the face of the backing member 20 for bending the latter and removing it from engagement with the flange portions 16 and 17 of the head 11.
The mop pad 21 is preferably fabricated of padding which may consist of natural fibres, such as cotton, wool, and the like, alone or in admixture with synthetic fibres, such as rayon, nylon, and the like, the fibres being held in sheet form by means of a flexible webbing. The mop pad 21 may be provided with stitching as at 26 in Figure 3, so that it retains it substantially rectangular flat shape without raveling.
A bail 27 is provided on the upper end of the handle 10 for conveniently hanging the mop assembly in a place of storage.
The handle may be fabricated of wood or light metal tubing, as desired, and the mop head 11 fabricated of light metal or cast from plastics. Reinforcing ribs are provided on the face of the head 11 opposite to the mop pad 21, so as to make the mop head rigid and permit application of force to the surface to be scrubbed or polished.
What is claimed is:
l. A mop assembly comprising a handle, a head, attaching means carried by one face of said head, detachable means for securing one end of said handle to said attaching means for pivotal movement, opposed downwardly and inwardly extending flange portions on the other face of said head, a flexible backing member having opposed edge portions seated in said flange portions with one face thereof substantially engaging the other face of said head, and a mop pad shaped to sheet form extending over the entire area of and secured to the other face of said backing member, said pad having portions adjacent the perimeter projecting beyond the boundary of said backing member, there being an aperture in said head through which a manually directed pressure may be applied to said one face of said backing member for releasing said backing member from engagement with said flange portions.
2. A mop assembly comprising a handle, a head, at-
taching means carried.byone face of said head, de-
wardly and inwardly extending flange portions on the other face of said head, a skirt connecting each of the adjacentends of said flange portions together and dependingly carried by said head, a flexible backing member having opposed edge portions seated in said flange portions with one face thereof substantially engaging the other face of said head and parts of said edge portions engaging the adjacent portions of said skirt to retain said backing member against lateral and longitudinal movement with respect to said head, and a mop pad shaped in sheet form extending over the entire area thereof and secured to the other face of said backing member, said pad having portions adjacent the perimeter projecting beyond the boundary of said backing member, there being an aperture in said head through which a manually directed pressure may be applied to said one face of said backing member for releasing said backing member from engagement with said flange portions.
3. A mop assembly comprising a handle, a fiat head having a pair of side edges arranged in parallel relation,
4, attaching means carried by one face of said head, detachable means for securing one end of said handle to said attaching means for pivotal movement, opposed downwardly and inwardly extending flange portions adjacent the other face of said head and dependingly carried by said side edges, a skirt connecting each of the adjacent ends of said flangelportions together and dependingly carried by said head, a flexible backing member having opposed edge portions seated in said flange portions with one face thereof substantially engaging the other face of said head, and a mop pad shaped to sheet form extending over the entire area of and secured to the other face of said backing member, said pad having portions adjacent the perimeter projecting beyond the boundary of said backing member, there being a pair of spaced apertures in said head through which a manually directed pressure may be applied to said one face of said backing member for releasing said backing member from engagement with said flange portions.
