3 Claims. (Cl. 40-10) This invention relates to a rotary or pivotal mounting arrangement.

An object of this invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive rotary or pivotal mounting which has n central pivot.

A further object of this invention is to provide a rotary or turnable indicator member for use with a map or the like to direct attention to a selected portion of the map.

A further object of this invention is to provide a mapholdin-g clip having a rotatably mounted indicator prd vided with an elongated window which may be turned to a selected position for directing attention to a selected portion of a map. I

The above and other objects and features of this invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which this invention pertains from the following detailed description, and the drawings, in which:

Fig. l is a plan view of a map-holding clip constructed in accordance with an embodiment of this invention, a map being shown mounted therein;

Fig. 2 is a view in section taken on the line 2--2 in Fig. 1, the map being removed; and

Fig. 3 is an exploded view of the clip shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

In the following detailed description, and the drawings, like reference characters indicate like parts.

In Figs. 1, 2, and 3 is shown a map-holding clip which includes a rotary or pivotal mounting constructed in accordance with another embodiment of this invention. In Figs. 1-3 inclusive, a clip member is indicated generally at 31. The clip member 31 is formed of resilient metal or the like and includes a relatively flat front plate or apertured member 32, a map-holding central section 33, and a rear section 34. The front plate portion 32 is provided with a circular opening 36. In the opening 36 is mounted a rotary member 37. The rotary member 37 includes outwardly projecting corner portions 38, 39, 41 and 42. The corner portions 38 and 39 are received under the plate portion 32 with the corner portions 41 and 42 being exposed on the exterior thereof. An appropriate direction indication, as the letter N may be inscribed on the corner portion 41 to permit use thereof for showing the north direction. On top of the rotary member 37 is mounted an annulus or ring 44 which serves as a washer separating the rotary member 37 from a second rotary member 45. The rotary member 45 is mounted with the corners 46 and 48 thereof extending through the ring 44 and through a central opening 49 in the rotary member 37. The corners 46 and 48 may extend inside the plate member 32. The rotary member 38 may be formed of transparent plastic material. The member 38 is provided with an elongated transparent window 51 which extends across the rotary member 38. The remainder of the rotary member is provided with a coating of paint or the like 52 which renders the remainder of the rotary member substantially opaque.

When the map-holding clip is in use, a map 54 of the type usually used for showing roads, highways, and the a, 2,867,925 Patented Jan. 13, 1958 like,is mounted between the front plate 32 and the central portion 33 of the clip member. The map may be'so oriented that a selected portion thereof is exposed through the window 51. The rotary member 45 is turned until the corner 41 thereof is directed in a northerndirection and the rotary 'mer'nbe'r"37 is turned until the window thereof is aligned with the selected portion of the map.

The entire clip together with the road map may be attached to an appropriate portion of a vehicle, such as a sun visor (not shown), by means of the clip portion 34.

As the vehicle progresses along a highway, the map may be moved progressively to bring new portions there of into alignment with the window, and the window may be turned to reveal only the selected portion of the map.

As shown, each of the rotary members is substantially square in shape with corners beveled to eliminate sharp points at the corners. The opening of the rotary member 37 is coaxial therewith so that the rotary member 45 is coaxial therewith.

The device illustrated in the drawings and described above, is subject to structural modification, without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

l. A map-holding clip which comprises a flat platelike apertured member having a circular opening, a clip member connected to the plate-like member for engaging a map to hold the map flat against the plate-like member, a plate-like rotary member mounted in said opening, said rotary member including a pair of oppositely disposed projections received on one side of the apertured member and a second pair of oppositely disposed projections received on the other side of the backing member, each of the projections of the second pair being intermediate the projections of the first pair, and a diametrically extending elongated window in said rotary mem ber, the rotary member being turnable to align the window with a selected portion of the map.

A map-holding clip which comprises a flat platelike apertured member having a circular opening, a clip member connected to the plate-like member for engaging a map to hold the map fiat against the plate-like member, a second clip member connected to the first clip member for engaging a portion of a vehicle to support the clip, a plate-like rotary member mounted in said opening, said rotary member including a pair of oppositely disposed projections received on one side of the apertured member and a second pair of oppositely disposed projections received on the other side of the apertured member, each of the projections of the second pair being intermediate the projections of the first pair, and a diametrically extending elongated window in said rotary member, the rotary member being turnable to align the window with a selected portion of the map.

A map-holding clip which comprises a flat platelike apertured member having a circular opening, a clip member connected to the plate-like member for engaging a map to hold the map flat against the plate-like member, a plate-like first rotary member of resilient material mounted in said opening, said first rotary member including a pair of oppositely disposed projections received on one side of the apertured member and a second pair of oppositely disposed projections received on the other side of the apertured member, there being a circular opening on the first rotary member, coaxial therewith, each of the projections of the second pair being intermediate the projections of the first pair, at least one of said projections being exposed and bearing direction indicia, a second rotary member, said second rotary member including a pair of oppositely disposed projections received on one side of the first rotary member and a second pair of oppositely disposed projections received 0n the other side of the first rotary member, and an 2,049,379 Hoskins July 28, 1936 elongated diametrically extending window in said second 2,756,921 Sternau July 31, 1956 rotary member, said second rotary member being turn- 2,777,230 Brown Jan. 15, 1957 able to align the Window with a selected portion of the map. 5 FOREIGN PATENTS References Cited in the file of this patent 377,743 France p 1942 v UNITED STATES PATENTS 1,584,559 Kroger May 11, 1926
