3 Claims. (Cl. -334) My invention relates to improvements in blanket construction and more particularly to the provision of an all-purpose blanket.
My invention relates further to an all-purpose blanket of the type referred to which is convenient to carry in an automobile and which has many advantages and purposes as will be hereinafter set forth.
The principal object of my invention is to provide an all-purpose blanket which may be made of fabric such as wool and have a waterproof cover upon one side of the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide a blanket of the type described thatis capable of being folded and provided with snap-fasteners and a handle to form a comparatively inconspicuous package, which may be used as a seat or cushion, and is easily carried from place to place.
The blanket forming the subject matter of my invention is so arranged that it also has a portion of the same provided with a hood portion to place over the head so that the blanket may be wrapped about the wearer to shield him from rain or cold.
A further use for the same maybe as a table cloth, one side of the same being formed of a waterproof material such as a decorative plastic, and after use as a table cloth it may be wiped off or washed and used as a blanket.
Another construction which I contemplate may include the provision of a row of snap-fasteners about the periphery of the blanket and the provision of a terrycloth towel of the same size and shape of the blanket, the towel also being provided with peripheral snapfasteners, so that the blanket and towel may be fastened together around three sides of the same, leaving the fourth open for ingress or egress when using it as a cover at the beach or asa sleeping bag.
I further contemplate the provision of the blanket with an opening between the fabric and plastic sheets, so that even without the terrycloth towel it may be used as a sleeping bag, the opening being provided with a zipper fastening or other suitable means for fastening the two sheets together when the blanket is not in use.
For a more comprehensive understanding of the construction, objectives and advantages of my invention, reference is had to the accompanying description and drawings, upon which:
Fig. 1 is'a top perspective view of the all-purpose blanket, the dash lines upon the same indicating the fold lines;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a partially folded blanket,
showing the same folded along the central fold lines;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a further folded condition of the blanket;
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view through one of the corners of the same and is taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3; I
Fig. 5 illustrates a further step in th? iQldipg of the blanket to form a seat or cushion;
Fig. 6 is a perspective view showing the blanket completely folded with the edges fastened together for carrying or to use as a seat or cushion;
Fig. 7 is a top perspective view of a modified form of the blanket showing the opening along one of the edges of the same with the zipper fastening for closing the opening, with a terrycloth towel of the same size as the blanket positioned directly thereabove and in position to be moved forward for snap-fastening the same about its periphery to the blanket; and
Fig. 8 is a side perspective view of the blanket folded for carrying, showing the provision of pockets on the same.
In the embodiment of the invention which I have chosen to illustrate and describe the same, I have shown the all-purpose blanket 10 generally in perspective in Fig. l, the blanketincluding, as shown in Fig. 4, a generally rectangular wool or fabric sheet 12, a plastic or other type water-proof sheet 14, and a U-shaped binding 16 that is fastened by suitable stitching 18 about the peripheral edges of both the sheets 12 and 14 to secure the same together. The blanket 10 is also provided across one corner of the same with a generally triangularly'shaped sheet of transparent plastic 20 which may be used as a hood, as will be hereinafter more clearly described.
The blanket is also provided with a pair of carrying handles 22 and 24 and a pair of snap- fasteners 26 and 28 to connect a fastening strap 3t) between desired porin Fig. 2, where it may again be folded on the lines 10b to effect the fold shown in Fig. 3. From the folded condition of the blanket shown in Fig. 3, it is folded along the cross-fold line to the condition shown in Fig. 5, and a last fold along the fold line 10d will provide the seat or package condition of the blanket shown in Fig. 6. In this condition the strap 30 is fastened between the two snap- fasteners 26 and 28, and it will be found that the handles 22 and 24 are together at the upper edges of the folded package so that the blanket is readily carried in this manner.
In Fig. 7 I have shown a modified form of construction wherein I have provided a wider binding 16a about the peripheral edge of the blanket and have also provided a plurality of equally spaced snap-fasteners 36 which are adapted to fasten to the face of the blanket a rectangularly shaped terrycloth towel 40 which also has a peripheral row of snap-fasteners 42 adapted to cooperate with those on the blanket. Thus the towel may be fastened to the blanket about the entire periphery of the same or upon as many sides as desired. In this construction I have also shown an opening 44 in one edge of the wool or fabric sheet 12, the same adapted to be easily closed by means of the usual zipper construction Z.
As best shown in Fig. 8, I have also provided one or more pockets P on the side of the waterproof sheet 14, the same being usually made of plastic so that they may be easily and cheaply attached by plastic welding.
From the above and foregoing description it can be seen that I have provided a versatile all-purpose blanket which has a number of uses, one as a cushion or back rest either in an automobile or at picnics, ball-games or other places; also as a table cloth when the waterproof surface is presented for use, as a blanket to pro vide Warmth, as a wrap-around provided with a hood to be worn when the weather is cold or inclement, and by providing the zipper opening along one edge of the same, is also useful as a sleeping bag. The provision Patented Jan. 27, 1959.,
aamaaa f snap-fasteners around the edge for attaching a terryclothtowel provides further use for the blanket at beaches or similar outings, and the provision of pockets in the same makes it useful as a carrying case as well as a seat or blanket.
While I have illustrated and described a specific embodiment of the invention, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that changes and modifications may be made in the exact details shown and I do not wish to be limited in any particular; rather what I desire to secure and protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. An all purpose blanket which may be used either as a sleeping bag or around the wearer with a portion acting as a hood over the head of' the wearer, said blanket comprising a rectangularly shaped sheet of cloth fabric and a similarly shaped sheet of waterproof material, the two sheets being secured together around their peripheral edges by a suitable binding, a generally triangularly shaped transparent plastic sheet being fastened thereto across one corner of the same, said triangularly shaped plastic sheet being fastened only on two sides with the base being open so it may be worn over the head as a hood and the blanket held around the wearer,
and said sheet of cloth fabric having an opening across one end of the same whereby the blanket may be usedas a sleeping bag, and a zipper attachment for closing said opening.
2. An all purpose blanket comprising a generally rectangularly shaped fabric sheet, a waterproof sheet of the same size, said sheets secured together around their peripheral edges, said blanket adapted to be longitudinally folded along parallel fold lines to form an elongated object one-fourth the width of said blanket, and then folded transversely from both ends towards the middle to form an object one-fourth the length of said blanket, a pair of snap fasteners secured to said blanket in such relationship that they are adjacent opposite ends of the same after the longitudinal folding of said blanket and a strap connected between said snap fasteners so that when folded as described a compact package is formed of the blanket so that it may be used as a seat.
3. An all purpose blanket comprising a generally rectangularly shaped fabric sheet, a water-proof sheet of the same size, said sheets secured together around their peripheral edges, said blanket adapted to be longitudinally folded along parallel fold lines to form an elongated object one-fourth the width of said blanket, and then folded transversely from both ends towards the middle to form an object one-fourth the length of said blanket, a pair of snap fasteners secured to said blanket in such relationship that they are adjacent opposite ends of the same after the longitudinal folding of said blanket and a strap connected between said snap fasteners so that when folded as described a compact package is formed of the blanket so that it may be used as a seat, said water proof sheet when folded facing outwardly and having one or more pockets fastened torthe exposed sides of the same.
