12 Claims. (Cl. 206-4514) This'invention relates: a supporting and display device. The main. objects of this invention are,
First, to provide a collapsible and erectable article support and display device adapted to support articles, for example such as a flashlight and the batteries therefor.
Second, to provide a. collapsible and erectable display device which may be formed integrally of a sheet of paperboard and is very compact when collapsed, and may be quickly erected to supportingly receive the article to be displayed.
Third, to provide a display device in which a substantial portion of the article displayed is exposed for inspection, and a device which may be suspended and is also stable when disposed upright upon a supporting surface.
Objects relating to details and economies of the invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

In the accompanying drawing I have illustrated my display device as'particularly adapted for the supporting and display of aflashlight 1 and batteries 22. It should be understood, however, that my invention is readily adapted for the display of various types of merchandise. I have not illustrated such adaptations as it is believed that modifications required for displaying particular articles would be understood by those skilled in the art to which my invention relates.
The embodiment of my invention illustrated is formed of a single sheet of fiberboard stock, the blank being generally indicated by the numeral 3 in Fig. 8, The scoring and folding lines of the blank are indicated by dotted lines. The embodiment illustrated comprises the upper back member 4, laterally spaced top members 5 hingedly secured to the bottom edge of the back memher 4 by'the hingingrscores 6. Front walls 7 are hingedly connected to the front edges of the top members 5 by the folding scores 8. Tzhebottom' 9 is hingedly connected to the bottom edges of the front walls by the hinging Un ted, States Patent ice scores 10 and the lower back member 11 is hingedly connected to the rear edge of the bottom 9 by the hinging scores 12. This lower back member is disposed in overlapping relation to and is desirably secured by adhesive to the lower end of the upper back member 4, see Fig. 3. The top members 5 are provided with flaps 13 hingedly connected thereto by the scores 14, while the bottom 9 is provided with flaps 15 hingedly connected thereto at 16. The side walls 17 are hingedly secured to the front walls at 18 and are provided with tucking tabs 19 hinged thereto at 20 and slit at 21 at the juncture of the flaps 19 with the side walls so that the side Walls may be swung rearwardly in overlapping relation to the flaps 13 and 15 and tucked between the flaps and rear wall 11, as is clearly shown in Fig. 4. This retains the parts in erected position.
In the embodiment illustrated, the inner edges of the top members 5 are curved at 22 to fittingly receive the display member 1, and the front walls are recessed at 23 to receive the flaring enlargement 24 of the body of the member 1. It should be understood that objects of various cross sections or shapes may be displayed and that commonly the opposed edges of the top members would be conformed to supportedly conform to the micle displayed.
In the embodiment of my invention illustrated, the front and end walls for the display parts 2 have window openings 25 therein resulting from the U-shaped slits 26 defining the inwardly foldable members 27 which are hinged at 28, see Figs. 1, 3, 4 and 8, these parts 27 being foldable or swingable inwardly to provide inner side walls for the compartments. To further support the displayed article 1, the upper rear wall member 3 has a semi-circular slit 29 therein and transverse score 30 defining a swingable article engaging member 31 which, in the embodiment illustrated, is of such size as to have snap-in or pressed engagement with the recessed upper end 32 of the display member 1 which has a head portion 33 which projects into the opening 34 or cut resulting from the forming of the tongue 31.
In the embodiment illustrated, the back wall is provided with a reinforcing. portion 35 which is hingedly joined to the upper edge of the back member at 36 and is folded down upon the rear side thereof and adhesively secured thereto. This part 35 has an opening 37 therein registering with the opening 34 to receive a portion of the head of the packaged battery. A hole 38 is formed in the back above the article displayed so that if desired the package may be suspended from a nail, hook or the like, or it may be supported on a surface.
The top members 5 are provided with holes iii--39 adapted to receive the projecting contact members 40 of the batteries 2. In the embodiment illustrated, the transparent closure 41 is springably supported by the spring 42 which is common in certain commercial flashlights, and the retaining member 31 is, in practice, snapped under the inturned edge 43, see Fig. 6. This provides a very secure anchorage for the article displayed and it may be handled roughly and variously p-ositioned without likelihood of its becoming disengaged.
It will also be noted that the recessed upper end of the flashlight, when a portion of it projects through the opening 31, is engaged by the downwardly projecting edge 44 of the upper edge of the opening of the downturned portion of the upper back member, which results in a very secure anchorage of the article to be displayed.
It is desired to point out that while my invention may be readily adapted for the packaging and display of various objects, I have not illustrated or adapted such modification.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to secure by Letters Patent is: i
1. A collapsible and erectable display device of sheet material cut and scored to define an upper back member, laterally spaced forwardly projecting top members hingedly connected to the bottom edge of said upper back member and having downwardly projecting closure flaps on their outer side edges, front walls hingedly connected to the front edges of said top members, a bottom hingedly connected to the lower edges of said front Walls and having upwardly projecting closure flaps on its side edges, a lower upwardly projecting back member hingedly connected to the rear edge of said bottom member and overlapping and secured to said upper back member, and side walls hingedly connected to the outer side edges of said front walls and foldable over said end flaps on said top members and bottom and having tongues on their swinging edges insertable between said bottom rear wall member and said flaps on said top members and bottom and interengageable therewith, said front and side walls having slits therein defining inwardly swingable members hinged to said front walls and when in erected position providing display openings in said walls, said lower back member, bottom member, top members and side walls coacting to provide laterally spaced article receiving chambers, said top members being laterally spaced to re ceive an article to be displayed between them and having article receiving recesses in their opposed edges, the front walls being laterally spaced to provide a display opening for an article disposed between said top members and being recessed at their lower ends to ret-ainingly receive an enlargement of an article disposed between said top members, said top members having openings therein spaced from their edges and adapted to receive upwardly projecting parts on articles disposed within said chambers, the top members having article receiving openings therein,

A collapsible and erectable display device of sheet material cut and scored to define an upper back member. laterally spaced forwardly projecting holder top members hingedly connected to the bottom edge of said upper back member, front walls hingedly connected to the front edges of said top members, a bottom hingedly connected to the lower edges of said front walls, and a lower back member hingedly connected to the rear edge of said bottom member and overlapping and secured to said upper back member, said walls having display openings therein, said top members being laterally spaced and having recesses in their opposed edges to retainingly receive an article disposed between them, the front walls being spaced to provide a display opening between them and having recesses at their lower ends adapted to receive an enlargement on the lower end of an article, the top members also having 1 article receiving openings therein, the upper back member having a swingable article engaging member.
6. A collapsible and erectable display device of sheet material cut and scored to define an upper back member, laterally spaced forwardly projecting holder top members hingedly connected to the bottom edge of said upper back member and having downwardly projecting closure flaps on their outer side edges, front walls hingedly connected to the front edges of said top members, a bottom hingedly connected to the lower edges of said front walls and having upwardly projecting closure flaps on its side edges, a

A display device comprising an upper back member, laterally spaced forwardly projecting top members projecting forwardly from the bottom edge of said upper back member, front walls projecting downwardly from said top members, a bottom connected to the lower edges of said front walls, and an upwardly projecting lower back member connected to the rear edge of said bottom member and to said upper back member, the said top members being spaced to supportedly receive a displayed article between them, the front walls being spaced to provide an opening in which an article disposed on said bottom between said top members is displayed.

A display device comprising an upper back member, laterally spaced forwardly projecting top members projecting forwardly from. the bottom edge of said upper back member, front walls projecting downwardly from said top members, a bottom connected to the lower edges of said front walls, an upwardly projecting lower back member connected to the rear edge of said bottom member and to said upper back member, and side walls connected to the outer side edges of said front walls, said walls having slits therein defining inwardly swingable members hinged to said front walls and when in erected position providing display openings in said walls, said top members being spaced to supportedly receive an article between them, the front walls being spaced to provide a display opening through which a portion of the article disposed between said top members is visible.

A display device comprising a rear wall, laterally spaced top members projecting forwardly from said rear wall in vertically spaced relation to the bottom edge there- 6 of, a bottom projecting forwardly from the bottom edge of said rear wall in downwardly spaced relation to said top members, front walls connecting said top members and bottom, said top members being laterally spaced and recessed to supportedly receive the article to be displayed, and side walls connected to the outer edges of said front walls and supportedly engageable with said rear wall, said rear wall having a swingable article engaging member thereon for retaining engagement with the upper end of an article disposed on said bottom between and in retaining engagement with said top walls.

A display device comprising a rear wall, laterally spaced top members projecting forwardly from said rear wall in vertically spaced, relation to the bottom edge thereof, a bottom projecting forwardly from the bottom edge of said rear wall in downwardly spaced relation to said top members, front walls connecting said top members and bottom, said top members'being spaced to supportedly receive an article between them, and side walls connected to the outer edges of said front walls and supportedly engageable with said rear wall, said rear wall having a swingable article engaging member thereon for retaining engagement with the upper end of an article disposed on said bottom between said top walls.

A display device comprising a rear wall, laterally spaced rear top members projecting forwardly from said rear wall in vertically spaced relation to the bottom edge thereof, a bottom'projecting forwardly from the bottom edge of the rear wall and in downwardly spaced relation to top members, and front walls connecting said top and bottom members, adjacent edges of said top walls being recessed and spaced to receive an article between them, the back wall having a swingable article engaging member therein and an opening therein adapted to receive a portion of upper end of the article.

A display device comprising a rear wall, laterally spaced rear top members projecting forwardly from said rear wall in vertically spaced relation to the bottom edge thereof, a bottom projecting forwardly from the bottom edge of the rear wall and in downwardly spaced relation to said top members, and front walls connecting said top and bottom members, adjacent edges of said top walls being spaced to receive an article between them, the back wall having a swingable article engaging member thereon and an opening therein adapted to receive a.
portion of upper end of the article.
