CONRAD F. GLANVILLE, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM H. YEO, OF SAME PLACE.
BOTTOM FOR BOOTS OR SHOES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,844, dated May 20, 1884.
' Application filed March '1, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CONRAD F. GLANVILLE, of the city and county of San Francisco, and State of California, haveinvented an Improvement in Bottoms for Boots and Shoes; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to an improvement in the bottoms of boots and shoes; and it consists of a flange or rim of rubber interposed between the inner and outer soles, so as to form an inclosed air-space between the central portions of these soles, within which is also placed a spring or springs, as will be more fully explained by reference to the ac oompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation showing a section of the sole, the interposed rubber, and spring. Fig. 2 is a bottom view with the outer sole removed to showthe elastic rim, the inclosed air-space, and spring. Fig. 3 is a transverse section. Fig. 4 is a section showing the rim with an extension over the toe.
A is the insole of a boot or shoe, and B is the outer sole. The upper leather a being drawn over the last and inner sole in the usual manner, a rim, C, of rubber is fitted between the upper and the outer sole. The outer edge of this rimis preferably made so as to form a slightly-projecting bead all around the edge of the sole. Theinner edge of this rubber strip is beveled, as shown, and it is sewed or otherwise secured in place between the soles, so as to leave an air-tight open central space inclosed by it beneath the ball of the foot. VVithin this space I fix a spring or springs, D, which give an elastic support to the foot at this point, and which serve to return the soles to their position after they have been compressed by the weight.
It will be manifest that, if desired, the rim C may have its outer edgeextended up over the toe of the boot, or alongthe sides, so as to protect the upper leather against wear or abrasion, as shown in Fig. 4.
Boots or shoes constructed in this manner are especially useful, as they guard the feet from external moisture, and at the same time provide for the escape of perspiration from the feet by reason of the air-space between the outer and inner sole.
The rubber casing and spring make the boot more easy to the foot, and at the same time prevent the leather from cracking, and strains on the stitches, and cause it to wearlonger.
I am aware that boots and shoes have been made with an entire elastic sole interposed between the outer and inner leather ones, with entire hollow rubber soles, which may be affixed to the boot, with connected air-spaces in the sole and heel, and a steel spring in the sole to allow the inner and outer sole to be compressed and separated, so as to cause a flow of air to and from the heelspace, also that various arrangements of channels or perforations have been made; andI do not claim such devices.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a boot, and in combination with an outer and an inner sole, a rim or flange of rubber interposed between their edges, so as to form an inclosed central air-space between the soles, substantially as herein described.
2. In a boot or shoe, an outer and an inner sole, with an edge-interposed rim or flange of rubber, forming an inclosed air-space between the soles, in combination with a spring or.
springs acting between the soles within this space, substantially as herein described.
3. In a boot, and in combination with an outer and an inner sole, a rim or flange of rubber interposed between their edges, so as to form an inclosed central air-space between the soles, said rim having its front or sides extended up to protect the upper, substantially as herein described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
CONRAD F. GLANVILLE.
