DANIEL RUGGLES, OF BARRE, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT lN BRAKES FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 31,477, dated February 19, 1861.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL RUGGLES, of Barre, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brakes for Sewing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the application of brakes to sewing-machines in the manner hereinafter set forth.
In the annexed drawings, Figure l represents a longitudinal vertical section. Fig. 2 represents an end view.
In the figures, A represents the table of a sewing-machine, and B represents the driving or balance wheel in general use on such machines.
G and D are two supports which depend from theunder sideof the table, the lower ends of which are provided with slots or openings for receiving the levers E and F. These levers are pivoted to said supports, and consequently have their fulcrums in them. A slot is made in one end of lever E, and a pin, a, is passed through one end of lever F and through this slot for the purpose of connecting the ends of the two levers together.
G represents a brake-block secured to the free end of lever F, and in such proximity to the wheel B as easily to operate upon it when desirable. One end of the lever E is secured to the lower end ofa vertical pin or key, which passes through the table, as seen. This pin or key (I is provided with a shoulder at m, and
it also passes through a sleeve, H, secured upon the table.
0 represents a spring, which surrounds the pin d within the sleeve, and which operates against the shoulder on the pin, and against a shoulder or offset in the table, as seen in Fig. 1. When the keydis pressed down it is readily seen that the brake-block G will be ap plied to the periphery of the wheel B, for the purpose of stopping the motion of said wheel. Also that the spring 0, acting upon the pin or key (I and upon the levers, will relieve the wheel B of pressure when the hand is removed from the key. This brake may be easily attached to any of the sewing-machines now in use, and answers either to stop or regulate the forward motion ofthe machine or prevent backward motion.
This machine may be modified by the employment of three or more levers to vary the power and change the direction of its application.
What Iclaim as new Letters Patent, is
The employment of a friction-brake with suitable levers and the pin or key d, in combination with the driving, balance, or other rotating wheels, and the table of a sewing-machine, substantially as and for the purposes herein specified.
