Description

I hereby bottle, showingin an `represented in Figs.
Fig.' 3 resembles the '.letter UNiTEDjSTATiis PATENT OFFICE;
DANIEL MILLEaor MARIETTA, eine.I
-iin P'RovED coRK- FASTENER Fon BOTTLE-s.
Specilicationfoiming part of Letters PatentrNo. 32,306, dated May 14,' 1861.
i To all whom` :Zt-may concern.' v
AiBe it known that I, DANIEL MILLER, of Marietta,"in the county of Washington' and State of Ohio, have invented a' newrand Improved Cork-Fastener 'for Bottles, and I do declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specication, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section of a 4common mineralwater bottle, and through my improved fastener, which is applied to it, representing the fastener in three positions. Fig. 2 isa side view of .the neck part of the end view my improved fastener -applied to it and holding acork.
Fig. 3 is a top view of the fastener detached from the bottle. 4 is a perspective view of the fastener. f a
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts-in the several figures.
This invention is applicable t'oany liquids; mineral-water bottles for holding the corks in the bottles, and to take the place vot' wire fasteningsT now `so commonly used on mineralwater bottles.
To enable those skilled `iii the art to make and use my invention, I'will proceed to de- Scribe its construction andoperation. la thev accompanying drawings, a (i represent two vertical poition`s,which yare cu rved, as
at their upper ends to the sides of a curved. holder, b, which in a top View represented in this Ushapedvcap or holder b are bent downward on each side of tliearnis a a, so that the i curve of this U-shape'd cap is concentric with a' point at w,.Fig. .1. This peculiarly-curved 44holding portion b, with its two' curved arms a c, may be cast of malleable iro'n in one piece.
lBis atriaiigular-shaped collar with its sides curved outward, which is made of strap Vmetal and placed around the neck. of the bottle A, under the head portion G of this neck,
kind or, bottles which are used for holding fermented but `it is more-especially intended for 1, 2, and 4, and connected U.'V The ends of resented by the dotted-red line y y'jn Fig'l. The arms an are also curved outward, as re v resented-in Fig. 2,l so as to pass on each si e gf the head C of the loo :minded edges of the cork'D.` .The prongsof the holder or cap b' re sufficiently nearf-toA gether, (and` parallel to. each other) Ato vpass tle, and over theJ seen by reference 'to Fig. 1 that Athe prongs b b .are'longer thanthe diameter of thetop of the cork D, and when they arefslipped over; the cork, as represented in black ure, their ends will project out equal distances so curved andpivoted to one side ofthe center line, y y, thatlthe capb 'will have a :regular downward draft in forcing it -oveitheeorkD to the position represented in-A black lines', Fig. 1,' and when the .fastener `is broughtto this position it will be seen that the upward pressure .of the cork against the U portionlb will not-cause this fastener'to fly back, as the curved prongs of the U portionhave nearly a level bearing, whether they be l'partially' or completely on the cork. 4
