Filed Sept. 18, 1963, Ser. No. 309,648 1 Claim. (Cl. 40-22) This invention relates generally to cards and more particularly to an identification card having means for receiving and supporting an identifying device and having means for removing the supported device.

A principal object of the present invention is to provide a card having a window therein adapted to receive a removable and replaceable identification label or the like therein.

Another object of the invention is to provide a card having a window therein with a removable and replaceable identification lab-el therein and with means for guiding at removing tool to the label for removing the label.

A specific object of the invention is to provide a card having a window therein, a backing sheet on the card and a removable and replaceable identification label in the window, the backing sheet having means for guiding a removing tool to the label for removing the label.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

FIG. 1 is a front perspective view of a card embodying one form of the invention.

Referring more in detail to the drawings, in FIG. 1 a card embodying one form of the invention is shown and designated generally at 10. The card comprises a rectangular-shaped plate-like body 12 of suitable plastic material. Adjacent one corner of the body, the lower right-hand corner as viewed in FIG. 1, an elongated rectangular-shaped opening is formed constituting a Window 14. The window has appreciable depth.

In accordance with the invention, a thin backing sheet 16 of transparent plastic material is secured to the rear surface of the body 12 by adhesive 18. The backing sheet is commensurate in dimensions with the body and spans the window 14. A hole 28 is formed in the backing sheet where it spans the Window disposed centrally of the window and adjacent one end thereof. On the face of the backing sheet facing the window 14 as shown in FIG. 1, indicia 21 appears for example the word Void for a purpose later to be described.

The window is adapted to receive an identification device of similar shape and size such as, for example, the

United States Patent 0 rectangular-shaped label 22 shown in FIG. 5. The label 22 is preferably formed of opaque plastic material with indicia 24 on the front surface thereof, such as, for example, 1964, indicating the year 1964. The label 22 shown in FIG. 5 has a layer of adhesive 25 on its rear surface which is protected by a paper strip 28. The label has similar dimensions as the window 14 and in use the strip 28 is peeled off of the label and the label inserted into the window and glued to the backing sheet 16 over the hole 28 and word Void therein. The outer surface of the label when inserted as shown in FIG. 7 is flush with the outer surface of the body of the card as seen in FIG. 8. The label 22 is used for identity ing the year of a credit card, for example, or the like, but it will be understood that labels for identifying any other kind of a device might be used.

The identifying label 22 may be readily removed by inserting a tool 36 through the hole 20 in the backing sheet 16 as shown in FIG. 8, breaking the seal and forcing the end of the label out through the window Where the forced out end may be grasped by the fingers of the hand and the label completely removed from the window. When the label is completely removed from the window, the word Void appears which signifies that the c-ard is of no further validity and cannot be used for obtaining credit, for example, until a new and fresh label is positioned in the window to cover the word Void. Thus, the card may be used year after year, for example.

The modified form of card 10 shown in FIGS. 9 and 10 differs from the card It merely in that the backing sheet 16'is opaque and is colored, the drawing being lined for the color red as indicated at 38. In all other respects, card 10 is similar to card 10 and similar reference numerals are used to indicate similar parts.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that 1 do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and that various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent In an identification card, a rectangular plastic plate-like body, of considerable thickness said body having a cutout therethrough constituting a window adjacent one corner thereof to receive an identifying label, a thin transparent plastic backing sheet secured to the rear surface of the body and spanning said window, an opaque plastic label with identifying indicia thereon positioned in said window, said label removably secured to the backing sheet by adhesive and being flush with the front of the body, said backing sheet having a hole behind the window adjacent one end thereof to receive a tool for breaking the seal between the label and backing sheet and for partly ejecting the label out through the window for complete removal by hand, such backing sheet having indicia thereon within the confines of the window and exposed when the label is removed, indicating that the card has no further validity.
