unpelleted absorbent material for dentists" use; second, so holding this material that it may be grasped readily with pliers and carried to its place of use; third, to afford facilities for keeping or feeding this absorbing material in position; fourth, for fixing or clamping this tool to tables or brackets. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side View of the entire device. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device as it appears in use. Fig. 3 is afront view of the device with gratings removed, showing internal construction. Fig. 4 is a rear end view as when clamped upon a table for use.

To construct this device as here illustrated, hollow tubes or cylinders A A are grouped together and passed through rings H, which are soldered together; or they may be fastened in combination in any'other convenient manner, being supported at the front end by legs or standards I, the rear end being supported by a clamp, D, and thus held firmly in position. Internal slides, a a, are constructed, and held in position by friction, and are slid along by means of knobs J, attached to the slide, which runs in slots, 9, in the walls of the tubes. The front end of one of the tubes is closed partially by a cap with a hole in its center, as shown at d, with cotton represented as protruding from it. The others of the group are partially closed by gratings or bars 0 c. The rear ends are closed by means of detachable caps F F.

The clamping device is shown at D, and consists of an upright sect-ion with a slot in its center 6, Fig. 4, through which a spindle, L, Fig. 1, passes, and is'secured by a thumbnut, K. This clamp is attached to the table Serial No. 158,276. (No model.)

or bracket by means of screws or bolts. To enable me to use this clamp upon the surface of a table, the lower end of the section is turned at a right angle, through which screws pass, as shown at b, Fig. 1. If it is wished to clamp upon the edge,the screws are passed through the upright part of clamp, as in Figs. 2 and 3 at D, thus making it reversible, and thereby adaptable to either edge or surface of a table.

To use this tool, remove the caps F F, Fig. 1, withdraw feed-slides a a by taking hold of knobs J, then charge the cylinder with prepared pellets of absorbent material, replace the feed-slides, as shown at C, Fig. 1, clamp upon table, as shown at Fig. 2. The method of grasping the pellets for use with pliers is shown at h, Fig. 2.

I am aware that a cottonholder has been invented of a cylindrical form with an aperture in its end, from which cotton could be pulled, similar in this respect to the upper section, Fig. 1, of my tool. I therefore do not claim this feature as new in my invention.

I am aware that a vertical vessel having a lid with a hole in it has been provided with a spring-impelled follower for forcing cotton up ag tinst the lid, so as to be accessible atthe opening in the same, and I lay no claim to such device; but

What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. In a device for holding dental cotton or other absorbent material, one or more vertically inclined and supported tubes or hollow cylinders closed at the lower end and open at he upper end, and each having a longitudinal slot in its wall, in combination with an inclosed feeding-slide for each tube,accessible through the slot in the tube for adjustment, substantially as described.

2. In a device for holding dental cotton, one or more longitudinally-slotted verticallyinclined tubes provided with inclosed friction feeding-slides having knobs or handles projecting through the slots, said tube ortubes being closed at the lower and open or partially open at the upper end, and supported on legs or bracketsprovided, as described, with means for attachment to a base.
