FURNITURE JACK This invention relates generally to furniture.
More specifically the present invention relates to furniture such as sofas and chairs.
It is generally well known that it is a difficult task for a homemaker for cleaning behind a couch or chair particularly when these items are heavy so that she can not readily move them away from a wall so as to gain access for cleaning there behind. This situation is, of course, objectionable and therefore in want of improvement.
Accordingly it is the principal object of the present invention to provide a furniture which incorporates self-contained means so that the furniture can be moved away with relatively little effort so that a homemaker may be able to clean at the rear thereof.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a furniture jack which in a retracted position does not interfere with the normal service of the furniture so that the furniture rests squarely upon its own legs and thus remains in a stationary position, but wherein when the jack is adjusted into an operative position, caster wheels on the lower end of the jack engage a floor so that the furniture can be moved about a room with relative ease.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a furniture jack which is simple in design, inexpensive to manufacture, rugged in construction, easy to use and efficient in operation.
These and other objects will be readily evident upon a study of the following specification and the accompanying drawing wherein:
FIG. 1 is a side elevation view of a furniture shown partly in cross section and showing the jack mechanism in a retracted position, and
FIG. 2 is a similar view thereof and showing the jack mechanism in an operative position.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, the reference numeral represents a furniture jack according to the present invention wherein there is an item of furniture 11 which may comprise a relatively heavy couch or stuffed chair and which may include a seat 12 and a back rest 13 which are supported upon a frame 14 which at its lower end is mounted upon a plurality of downwardly extending legs 15 for supporting the furniture upon a floor 16 of a room.
In the present invention, the furniture item 1] includes a jack mechanism 17 that is selectively adjustable between a retracted position shown in FIG. 1 and an extended position, as shown in FIG. 2, the jack mechanism being operated by means of a removable control handle 18.
The jack mechanism 17 includes a collapsable frame 19 upon each opposite end of the furniture, the collapsable frame 19 each being supported upon a supporting plate 20 which is secured by means of screws 21 to the inner sidewall 22 of each end wall 23 of the fuiniture.
Each of the frames includes a pair of legs 24 which are centrally pivotable about pins 25 which are securable stationarily to the plate 20. At the lower end of the legs 24 there are provide wheel casters 26 for purpose of engaging the floor 16 when the jack is in an operative position.
The legs 24 of each frame are interconnected together pivotally free by means of a pair of links 27 each one of which is connected pivotally free at one end by a pin 28 to the upper end of one leg, while the opposite end of the link 27 is connected pivotally free by means of a pin 29 to the lower end of the other leg 24.
An important feature of the present invention is that the pins 25 may at least have one thereof extend between both of the frames 19 so that when a radially extending stub shaft 30 rigidly affixed thereto is pivoted by means of the handle 18, that both of the frames 19 will be pivoted about the pins 25 so that the jack assumes adjustability between the retracted and extended position. It is therefore evident that each of the legs are pivotable about the pin 25 and that one of the pins intercommunicate between the frames at each end of the furniture so that all four wheels 26 can engage the floor so that the furniture can be raised upwardly with the legs 15 being lifted off the floor 16 so that the furniture can be pulled away from a wall and permit a homemaker to clean there behind or which can be used for relocating a furniture in a room, in an effortless manner.
As shown in the drawings, it is to be noted that a pair of stops 31 are mounted on each of the plates of each frame mechanism, the stops 31 limiting the downwardly extending position of the frame mechanism legs when in an extended position.
What I now claim is:
1. In a furniture jack, the combination of an item of furniture, said item of furniture comprising either a couch, a stuffed chair or other equivalent and relatively heavy furniture, and said furniture item incorporating a jack mechanism for effortlessly moving said furniture item away from a wall or relocating the same, said furniture item including opposite end walls and a plurality of four legs for supporting said furniture item upon a floor of a room, and said jack mechanism comprising a pair of frame mechanisms each one of which is supported upon an inner side of each of said sidewalls of said furniture item, each of said frame mechanisms comprising a stationary plate secured to said inner side of said furniture end wall, each of said plates having a pair of pins projecting therefrom, at least one of said pins comprising an elongated rod supported between said plates of said frame mechanism, said rod being supported rotatably free on each of said plates, a pair of legs centrally pivotable about said pins, a lower end of said legs each being provided with a caster wheel, and a pair of interconnecting links between said legs of each said frame mechanism, one end of each of said links being attached pivotally free to an upper end of one leg while the opposite end of said link is connected pivotally free to a lower end of the other said leg.
2. The combination as set forth in claim 1, wherein a radially extending stub shaft is rigidly affixed to said pin compris ing said elongated rod extending between said frame mechanisms, said radially extending stub shaft detachably receiving a tubular handle for conveniently pivoting said rod so to adjust said frame mechanism between a retracted and an extended position.
3. The combination as set forth in claim 1, wherein a pair of stops are mounted on each of said plates of each frame mechanism, said stops limiting the downwardly extending position of said frame mechanism legs when in an extended position.

Claims (3)

2. The combination as set forth in claim 1, wherein a radially extending stub shaft is rigidly affixed to said pin comprising said elongated rod extending between said frame mechanisms, said radially extending stub shaft detachably receiving a tubular handle for conveniently pivoting said rod so to adjust said frame mechanism between a retracted and an extended position.
3. The combination as set forth in claim 1, wherein a pair of stops are mounted on each of said plates of each frame mechanism, said stops limiting the downwardly extending position of said frame mechanism legs when in an extended position.
