Description

UNITED STATES IAIENI OFFICE.
GEORGE M. RHOADES, OF EAST HAMILTON, NEW7 YORK.
MILL-PICK.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 38,603, dated May 19, 1863.
T o all whom it 'may concern:
Be itknown that I, GEORGE M. RHoADEs, of East Hamilton, in the county of Madison and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mill-Picks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in whichF Figure 1, is a side view, Fig. Q is also a side view of the head in two parts. Fig. 3 is a top view. Fig. 4 represents the blade.
Similar letters of reference denote like parts in all of the figures.
To enable others skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invent-ion I will proceed to describe it.
I constructy the head of my improved mill pick in two parts, marked A and B, in the lower or large end of said pick I make a depression suitably deep to receive and hold the blade shown .in Fig. 4f, which consists of a suitably tempered piece of steel.
C represents a nipple which ts into a depression of proper form on the opposite side of the head. The nipple, blade, and the two rings, marked I), together with the handle are employed to hold the head together.
E represents an ordinary handle and F arms to which I attach a piece of leather the outer edges of which is shown in dotted lines, by this arrangement the hand of the operator is much better protected than it would be it said leather was simply attached to the handle. The lower end of the head is diminished in size at I-I, so as to enable the operator to see the indentations made by the previous blow.
The advantages resulting` from my improved mill pick are simplicity,` cheapness, and perfect adaptation to all kinds ot' work, being a combination of elements not heretofore found.
Having thus described and represented my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The above described mill pick, as a new article of manufacture said pick being provided with the tapering sectional head, the nipple and rings, and the arms for the shield, constructed, adjusted and used in the manner and for the purposes specied.
