Description

w. M. KEPLER.
l y Cooking Range.. No. 42,002.v Patented March 22, 1864.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE- WILLIAM M. KEPLER, oF cINcINNATI, oHIo.
`IMPROVEMENT IN COOKING-RANGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 42,002, dated March 22, 1864.
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. KEPLER, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ranges for Cooking, Baking, and Heating Purposes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full. clear, and exact description ofthe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a front View of the range. Fig. 2 represents a top plan, and Fig. 3 represents a horizontalsection lthrough the same, taken above the grate and through the hot-air pipes that convey hot air into the ovens.
Similar letters of reference, where they occur in the several figures, denote like parts in all cases.
My invention consists in arranging hot-air chambers on each side of the tire and conveying the heated air therefrom to the ovens on each side through pipes outside of the range, so that said pipes may be made to communicate with heated air-pipes ascending to a bath or other room above, and so that the usual water-back may be used, it' desired, without interference with the hot-air chambers at the sides of the tire-box.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the draw- In s.
gA A represent the doors of the ovens B B. Gis the door of the fire-box D, and E the door opening into the ash-box. F is the exitpipe for smoke, gases, &c. The fire-box D, on its sides and rear, I propose to make of corrugated iron, for two purposes-viz., to allow for expansion and contraction without cracking, and to get a greater extent of firesurface for heating the air in the adjacent chambers G G. The air to be heated may be brought from Without the house and introduced at c a, whence it comes in contact with the plates of the fire-box D, and being heated,
it is conducted through the pipes H H. first out of the range in rea-r thereof, and thence into the ovens B B, for the purpose of baking or roasting. The object of having the hotair pipes outside of the range is that they may be readily tapped for the purpose ot' taking the heated air therefrom and conveying it to other places to be heated.' If these 'hot-air passages were within the outside plates ofthe range, they could not be so readily connected with such pipes as the circumstances of the case might require. In rear of' the tire-box, at I, there is space for the introduction of the usual waterback, if desired, so that water may be heated by the range. The heated products of combustion from the fire pass over I the tops of the ovens B,l thence down by diving-tlues J .at kthe outer ends of the ovens, thence by ues underneath the ovens to the eXit pipe F.
b b are coverings over Ventilating-passages that lead from the ovens to the external air, or by pipes or passages to the exit line, so as to carry off the gases from the ovens when roasting or baking therein. The range may have the usual pot-holes, as seen at K, and it is thus adaptable to all the requirements of a kitchen, with the addition of being capable of generating heat-for warming apartments above.
Having thus described my invention, what I claimv is- 4 The arrangement of the hot-air chambers G G at the sides of the fire-box and connecting them with the ovens B B by pipes that -rst A. B. SToUGHToN, HAvER. FENDRICH.
