SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 424,411, dated March 25, 1890..

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN S. FIELDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Asbury Park, in the county of Monmouth and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bags; andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of this invention isto simplify the securing of the contents of a bag and dispensewith cords and strings asordinarily used.

The invention consists in permanently securing to a bag an elastic band or loop and the combinations thereof, substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally embodied in the claims.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the several figures, Figure l is a perspective view of a bag with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the stiifening or strengthening piece; and Fig. 3 is a section through line as in Fig. 1, showing only the band, stiffening-piece, and cross-bar.

In said drawings, a represents an ordinary paper bag with a bottom-inclosing flap 1). Upon the side of the bag near the bottom is a stiffening and strengthening piece 0, with an opening d. (Shown in Fig. 2.) Through this opening (1, and before the piece 0 is secured to the body of the bag, the loop of an elastic band 6 is passed, and is prevented from being withdrawn by a small cross-bar or detainer m. (Shown in Fig. 3.) In the inclosing-fiap is an opening 02, through which that portion of the elastic band 6 is drawn when the inclosing-flap is secured in position.

In carrying out my invention an elastic band is selected of the size desired, a loop of the elastic is then passed through the stiffening and holding piece 0, and the cross-bar m is inserted in the loop projecting through the opening in the piece 0. The piece 0 is then secured to the bag by paste, gum, or any desired substance, the side of the piece 0 having the loop and cross-bar resting against the body of the bag. The outward-projecting portion of the elastic band is then passed through the opening *a in the inclosing-flap b, and this flap is then brought up and secured to the body of the bag in the usual manner.

In this condition the bag is ready for use and can be sold as an article of merchandise. WVhen the bag is filled, the top portion is folded over in the usual manner, and the elastic band is then brought up and over, as is readily understood. The bag is then securely closed and the contents prevented from escaping.

By the use of my improved attachment binding strings or cords are dispensed with, the bags can be closed in much less time, and are always ready for immediate use.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination, with the body of a bag, of a holding-piece attached to said body, an elastic binding-band attached to said holdingpiece, and an inclosing-flap for securing the holding-piece to the bag-body, said flap being secured to the body of the bag and provided with an opening through which the elastic band passes, as described, and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination, with the body of a bag, of a holding-piece attached to said body and provided with an opening, an elastic bindingband, a cross-bar or detainer, and an inclosing-fiap secured to the body of the bag and provided with an opening through which the elastic band passes, all said parts being arranged and combined as and for the purpose set forth.
