Description

(No' Model.)
G. O. MCBRIDE.
FOLDING TARGET.
No. 429,942. Patented June 10, 1890.
A TTORNE YS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
CHARLES O. MCBRIDE, OF MUSOATINE, IO\VA.
FOLDING TARGET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,942, dated June 10, 1890.
Application filed February 26, 1890- Serial No. 341,793. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES O. MCBRIDE, of Muscatine, in the county of Muscatine and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Folding Target, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an improved target to be used in the pastime of hurling a dart or javelin, and which is particularly adapted for parlor use in a game of the character indicated, the object being to provide a target which is adjustable for height and that may have its legs compactly folded when not in service.
To these ends my invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts,'as is hereinafter described, and indicated in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the target in position for use. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. target in position for service, and Fig. 4 represents the device with its legs folded.
The target-board A is preferably made of soft light wood, is rectangular in form, and rendered substantial by the battens a a, which are secured across the top and bottom of the board on the rear side near the edges of the same.
On the front of the board A, which may be painted any suitable color or have a paper facing secured thereto, several concentric circles b are marked, and in case paper or cardboard is used as a facing, which may be removable, these circles can be printed or otherwise marked on the sheet. Each circle from the outer to the inner one increases in numerical value, or rather the spaces bounded by them, the outer space, or the one farthest removed from the center of the target-board, being lowest in value, the ratio of increase in valuation being such as may be preferred, the center or b'ulls-eye being the highest.
The legs 0 are made of wood, their entire length being such that they will support the boardwhenfully extended ataproper elevation for the useof adults. It being desirable in such Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the' a game as throwing the dart that the height of the target be adjusted to the stature of the player, provision has been made to facilitate such a regulation for height, and to this end the legs 0 are each slotted, as at c, from a point near their upper terminals longitudinally of a sufficient length to allow the desired alteration in length of the legs to be made. The legs 0 are secured to the batten a by a thumb-screw bolt and washer for each. These bolts d, engaging the washers with their winged heads or nuts, pass through the slots 0' into the batten a, so that by their use the legs may be firmly clamped upon the targetboard A and support it at any desired height from the floor or ground.
To maintain the target-board Ain position to expose its face at the correct height and inclination to receive a dart, as is shown in Fig. 3, a folding prop or leg 6 is provided, which is hinged at its upper end f to the transverse center of the top batten a, this hinged piece being preferably made of alength about equal to the vertical dimension of the board A. To the lower end portion of the hinged leg-section e a leg g, similar in form to the other legs 0, is adjustably attached, the upper portion of said leg being slotted, as at g for the reception of a thumb-screw bolt h, which, when inserted through the slot and into the leg-section e, will afford an extension prop or leg that, being inclined rearwardly, will, along with the leg 0, support the target-board A at any desired height and inclination desired.
The target-board and darts, which latter I maybe formed as shown in Fig. 3, can be used indoors or upon a lawn and afford healthful and innocent amusement for adults or children.
lVhen not in use, the legs 0 of the target board A can be moved laterally on the loosened bolts cl, so as to swing them into the position shown in Fig. 4, the center compound leg 6 g being revolved and folded, as repre sented in the same view.
WVhen the device is folded into the compact package represented, it can be conveniently shipped as merchandise or taken with parties as a source of amusement at picnics or similar outdoor excursions.
Having thus described my invention, What I nally-slotted leg-piece adjnstahly secured on I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters the hinged section end so as to slide and fold,
Patent, issubstantially as set forth.
