Description

G. Z. KROH.
Carriage-Curtain Fastening.
A Patented Aug. 29, 1865 Inventor, vggsses= WMZ /M UNITED STATES PATErrT OFFICE.
CALVIN Z. KROH, OF TIFFIN, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN CURTAIN-KNOBS.
To all whom it may concer/:t:
Be it known that I, CALVIN Z. KRQH, of Tiffin, in the county of Seneca and Stat-e ot" Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Ourtain-Knob; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,.and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of Vthis speciiication, in whichare subjected to very rough usage when they are used as button-fastenings, and as their stems ale simply straight brads with pointed ends the knobs soon draw ont and are lost.
The object of my invention is to construct such knobs or curtain-fastenings in such manner thatthey can be readily inserted into wood and cannot be withdrawn under Vall ordinary usage. At the same time the fastenings will have a better linish and presenta much neater appearance than the old form ot' knobs, as will be hereinafter described.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings, a represents the button-head of the curtain-knob, which is formed on the end of a conical neck, b, that has for its base a square nut, c, and acircular shoulder, d. rIhe form of the portions aand b ofthe knob need not ditt'erin any respect from those which are commonly used, but in conjunction with such a knob it will be seen, by reference to Figs. 1, 2, and 3, that I add the square base or nut c, which not only forms an ornamental fastening, but enables me to employ a screw-stem, e, by means of which the knob can be permanently secured in place.
By reference to Fig. 2 it will be seen that I employ the square nut c to receive a wrench, B, by means of which the fastenings can be quickly screwed into their proper places. If desirable, aT-wrench or a brace and socketed bit may be used for inserting the knobs. The screw-stem e may be turned upon a stem which is formed upon the square base-knobs; but I prefer to cast the knobs or button-heads upon the heads of tapering-pointed wood-screws.
In Fig. et an old form of curtain-knob is shown, from which it will be seen that there is no provision iliade for preventing this tastening from being drawn out of place, except in some instances where the points of the stems or brads are clinched, which is always objectionable as liable to split the part through which the knob-stems are driven.
By my invention I am enabled to insert. the screw-stems ot' the knobs without using a hammer, which in the old forms ot' knobs batters and very often breaks cti" theirbutton-heads.
The enlarged circular shouldcrd, which forms the base for the nut o, serves two purposes, viz.: It serves as an abutment for the und ot' the wrench B, and also prevents the corners of the nut or square base o from abrading the surface ot' the wood in the act ot' inserting it.
The nuts c may be made octagonal or polygonal; but the simplest form is that represented in the drawings.
I do not claim a square or angular enlargenient on a screw, in itself considered; but,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The new article ot' manufacture, as herein described, consisting ot' the screw e, tlange d, square or angular enlargement c, neck b, and head a, all united together for the purpose set forth.
