Description

J. PEASE.
Cartridge-Box. No. 50,730 Patented Oct. 31, 186 5.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN PEASE, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARTRIDGE-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 50,730, dated October 31, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN PEASE, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cartridge-Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which' Figure l is a perspective view of my invention; Fig. 2, a side sectional elevation of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
In this improvement the cartridge-box case has attached to it not only a box for containing ammunition, but also other boxes for carrying percussion-caps, oil, bullet-patches,swabs, and other conveniences desirable for the soldier or sportsman. These various articles have heretoforenecessitated the employment ofseveral distinct boxes attached to the person by separate straps, but in the present improvement they are all combined in one case or box.
Referring to the drawings, A is the cartridge case or box, made of leather in the usual manner.
B is the ordinary covering-flap of the cartridge-box, fastened by strap and button a b.
O is the ordinary tin box for containing the ammunition. Said box may have one or more compartments.
The above parts are all made in the usual manner.
Upon the front, 0, of the leather box A, I attach a leather case, D, having a covering-flap,
d, which is fastened by means of a loop, like a common pocket-book. The use of the case D is to contain percussion-caps. When the cartridge-box is closed the case D is completely covered and protected by the flap B.
At each lower end of the cartridge-box A, I have made an opening, into which I introduce horizon tally two small metallic boxes or cases, E E. These boxes correspond in width to the ammunition-box O, under which they slip, as shown. The use of the cases E E is to contain oil, bullet-patches, swabs, cloth, or any other, small articles of convenience that may be desirable to carry. The case E has a screw-cap, e, and is intended to contain oil for the lubrication of the fire-arm. The cases may be conveniently pulled out or restored to their places without opening or disturbing the cartridgebox flap B. The said cases E E are covered, protected from the weather, and prevented from displacement by means of the coveringflaps F F, which are attached to the ends of the cartridge-box, and fasten upon buttonsff upon the bottom thereof.
1 do not claim, broadly, the attachmentof a cap-holder to the ammunition-box; but,
Having thus described myinvention,I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, as an improved article of manufacture The cartridge-box A, provided with the pocket D and flap B, and with the lower compartments, E E, and their securing-flaps F F, the arrangement and adaptation being substantially as described and represented.
JOHN PEASE.
