RAIL JOINT.

NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MASON J PECHIN, OF PHILADELPHIA,PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO CHARLES T. STAGG, JR, OF SAME PLACE.
RAIL-JOINT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 507,751, dated October 31, 1893.
Application filed October 29, 1892.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MASON J. PECHIN, of the city of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Rail-Joints; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference be ing had to the accompanying drawings, form ing part of this specification.
My invention has relation to an improvement in rail-joints, and consists in the device hereinafter particularly described and claimed.
The object of my invention is to provide a rail joint and chair for uniting the ends of railroad rails to maintain a firm and true oint and to preserve the alignment of the rail; a further object is to provide a supporting bridge for sustaining the bases of the ends of the rails so that the depression of one rail end below the other under the weight of the train passing over them may, as far as possible, be prevented.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is an end view of my improved rail joint in position. Fig. 2 is a plan view illustrating the parts in dotted lines.
A represents the rails; surrounding the rail ends at the joint I provide a frictional clamping device constructed principally of three parts, viz: plate, B, plate B and securing key, 0. The plates, B, B, are preferably constructed, as shown in Fig. 1, to bind against the neck, a, and the base, a, of the rail, A; each plate, B, B, has integrally pro vided upon it the alternating fingers or projections, b, b, the respective fingers of the respective plates being adapted to interlock into each other beneath the base a, of the rail, A, and operating at the same time as a support for the base of the rails; a longitudinal orifice, 0, is provided through the prongs, b, b, preferably right-angled and tapering in its length. As the clamping plates, B, B, are secured in position upon and around the rail ends, A, the orifices, 0, in the prongs, b, I), register with each other and a key, 0, preferably partially Wedge-shaped, of a length slightly greater than the length of the plates is forced into the orifice, 0, and then preferably secured in position by a pin, a, or by other suitable means. In this construction the clamping Serial No. 450,331. (to model.)
plates thus locked firmly bind upon the neck and base of the rail ends and hold them together securely in position. I prefer the conmore permanent and truerjoint obtained than in constructions heretofore invented.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is t 1. In a rail joint chair clamping plates, B, B, having inwardly projecting locking fingers,b, b, integral with the respective clamping plates constructed to laterally interlock with each other and an orifice provided longitudinally through the said prongs and a key provided therein for locking the plates togetherin position upon the rail substantially as described.
2. In a rail joint and support, clamping plates, B, B, alternating series of prongs, b, I), provided integrally upon said respective clamping plates, B, B, adapted to laterally interlock into each other beneath the base of the rail, orifice, 0, provided longitudinally through said prongs and key, 0, adapted to be provided in said orifice, 0, substantially as described.
3. In a rail joint and supporting bridge clamping plates B, 13, series of prongs, b, I), provided integrally upon said respective clamping plates, B, B, adapted to laterally interlock into each other beneath the base of the rail, orifice, 0, provided longitudinally through said prongs, and key, 0, adapted to be provided in said orifice, 0, pin, 0, provided in said key 0, for securing the same in position substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of October, A. D. 1892.
MASON J. PEOHVIN.
