SPECULUM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 530,728, dated December 11, 1894.
Application filed August 9, 1894.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J ESSE D. SHERBROQK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Winnetoon, in the county of Knox and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Specula; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in veterinary obstetrical specula, the purpose thereof being to provide a cheap, simple and effective speculum which may be used in connection with veterinary obstetrical forceps for removing pigs, dead or alive, from sows, the parts being so constructed that they can be readily adjusted for application and removed with the forceps and animal.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth and particularly'pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a sectional view of a speculum constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a front view, which is adapted to be used in connection with my invention.
A designates a flat ring which is provided near one edge with slots a a and near its other edge with apertures a, there being preferably four of each located around the ring side by side and at equal distances. The outer surface of the ring is enlarged around each aperture 01. to provide bearings for set-screws 13 positioned in said apertures, the set-screws having collars b which bear against the inner side of the ring and hold them in place.
O'O designate the blades or valves of the speculum which are curved transversely in the segment of a circle so that when they are all brought together with their edges abutting they will form a complete circle. lhese blades are formed of rigid material and are provided with rounded edges and ends. The inner ends of the blades are bent to provide portions 0 which are at nearly right angles with the blades and are adapted to pass Serial No. 519,861. (No model.)
through the slots at in the ring, and assaid portions 0 are of considerable width they will hold the blades in line. Adjoining the bent portions 0 the blades are provided with socketed lugs c which are internally threaded and into whichpass the set-screws B.
It'will be noted that by the construction hereinbefore described each individual blade is independently adjustable and when adj usted by the set-screws will move to and from the center of the supporting and con necting ring A. The shoulders on the setscrews hold the same so that the blades will be positively adjusted when said set-screws are turned.
It is well known in veterinary practice that sows, especially those that are highly inbred, have difficulty in giving birth and that assistance is required to deliver their young. This device is adapted to provide convenient and efficient means which may be used not only by a veterinary surgeon but also by those unskilled in veterinary practice or the use of veterinary instruments.
In inserting the speculum the blades are first brought together, as shown in full lines Fig. 1, and they are afterward separated by suitably adjusting the thumb-screws B. This gives the operator an opportunity to see'the position of the pig so that it can be properly grasped by the forceps, and after being grasped the speculum, forceps and pig are re- 'moved.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A speculum for veterinary use comprising a fiat ring having slots at a and apertures a, blades 0 curved transversely in the segmentof a circle and having internally screwthreaded lugs c and projecting portions 0 which pass through the slots at, and thumb screws B retained in the apertures a by shoulders and engaging the screw-threaded lugs on the blades, substantially as shown and described.
