Application filed January 31, 1 8 95 To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY T. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Umatilla, in the county of Lake and State of Florida, have invented a new and useful Shoe, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to shoes and hasfor its object to provide a boot or shoe for the being constructed with a metallic sole and lar devices constructed of leather are subject; and the object in View is to provide a metallic protector which shall not exceed, in Weight, an ordinary leather shoe adapted for the same purpose; and furthermore, to provide means for replacing worn parts.

Further objects and advantages of this invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side view of a shoe constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view,in perspective, of the sole and heel, with the removable heel-plate detached.

1 designates a metallic sole, having a concaved upper surface and adapted to be covered, on its inner surface, to protect the foot of the wearer, by a thin layer of leather, as shown at 2, and integral with this sole-plate, at its rear end, is the heel 3, which is hollow, being with sockets 6 for engagements by screws 7 for holding the removable heel-plate 8 in place. the shoe by means of pegs, tacks, or other similar devices in use, and the guard or counter is provided with a seriesof perforations 12 connected by a groove 13, for stitching 14, such stitching being, preferably, of copper wire or its equivalent.

By constructing the device of thin metal, and with a hollow heel, it may be made of sufficient lightness to be worn with ease, and when the heel-plate becomes useless by reason of long wear, it may be replaced in the manmer hereinbefore indicated.

The object in extending the sole-plate, especially in shoes adapted for use by'fruitpickers and other laborers who are required to climb ladders, is to receive the wear of the rungs of the. ladder, which usually occurs upon the portion of the sole just in advance of the heel. plate is preferably roughened, as shown in the drawings.

It will be understood that while I have described my invention as applied to a workmans shoe, it is equally applicable to dress or fine shoes for gentlemen and ladies and also for children, the only difference being in the weight or thickness of the parts which would naturally be greater for a heavy than for a light shoe, and in light or dress shoes the roughening of the lower surface of the sole may be omitted, as the main object of this portion of the construction is to enable the wearer to obtain a firm foothold upon the surface traversed.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of thisinvention.
