Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
JOHN K. ONEIL, OF KINGSTON, NEW YORK.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 54,585, dated May 8, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, JOHN K. ONEIL, of
Kingston, in the county of Ulster and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Attachment for the Sleeves and Legs of Garments; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, making part of this specification.
Figure l represents the end of a coat-sleeve provided with the attachment; Fig. 2, a cenA tral longitudinal section thereof.
Like letters designate corresponding parts in both figures.
The sleeve is represented at A, and inside thereof the attachment B is placed, being sewed or otherwise secured to the inside or lining 'of the sleeve, either permanently or detachably, substantially as shown. The front end, a., of the attachment reaches forward not quite so far as the sleeve itself, so that it will n ordinarily be hidden from view by the sleeve.
This iront end is made to tit closely around the wrist or forearm by an elastic cord or braid, c, as shown in the drawings, so as to make a close tit around the wrist or arm and allow the hand to be inserted and withdrawn without untyiug the cord and tying again.
The use and advantages of this attachment are to keep the cold air from entering the sleeve around the wrist and arm, and to retain the heat of that part of the body.
In order to provide for the moving of the arm forward and backward in the sleeve without causing the attachment to slide up on the arm and stick there, I add to the attachment several elastic pieces, b b, running lengthwise of the attachment, or I line it with shirred cloth or strips, which keep the attachment somewhat crimped or drawn together lengthwise, and allow the movement oi the arm out and in without drawing up the outer or contracted end of the attachment.
The article may be made of any desired material and lined so as to make it as warm as required. y
The arrangement of the attachment for the legs of pantaloons and other garments is precisely similar to that for sleeves, as above described; and in using the attachment with pantaloons it may also'serve for attaching straps, buttons, or equivalent. means to for connecting with the boots or shoes, to hold the legs of the garment down around them, and thus make a neater appearance.
A modification of this invention may consist in the use of a detached limh|-protector of otherwise similar arrangement and use, but provided with an elastic hoop or band to keep the enlarged end `or edge pressed outward against, though not secured to, the inside of the sleeve or leg of a garment.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The attachment for sleeves and legs of garments, provided with the elastic cord or braid c and the elastic or shirred strips b b, substantially as and for the purposes herein specified.
