SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 575,910, dated January 26, 1897.

To all whom it may concern,.-

Be it known that I, WILLIS M. SHERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bicycles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to bicycles 5 and it consists of new and improved means of identification which will be fully described hereinafter.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of the steering-head and top bar of a bicycle. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of a portion of a top bar. Figs. 3 and 4. are cross-sections on line X X, Fig. 2, showing modifications of the same device. Fig. 5 is a plan view, Fig. 6 a longitudinal section, and Fig. 7 a cross-section, showing another modification of my device.

A is the steering-head, and B the top bar of a bicycle. The latter is hollow and of any approved form and has an opening in it to receive a cap C, Figs. l to 4, inclusive, which is provided with a lock and bolt D, and also with a receptacle in the form of a pocket, as E in Fig. 3, or a spring-clasp, as E in Fig. 4.

The lock may be of any well-known type or style, but each lock should require a different key from the others. The pocket E and spring-clasp E' are designed to contain means of identifying the machine as belonging to its owner, and this means may consist of his or her photograph or signature, or any other Serial No. 587,161. device that the owner may desire, and it may contain a card or plate which bears the owners address, by which he or she might be identiiied in case of accident.

The modification Figs. 5, G, and 7 shows my invention as applied to old or nished wheels and shows the cap C as having a prong c, that projects throughone end of a slot d and under the side of the tube, while the lock f projects through the other end of the slot, so that when the key is turned the bolt gwill lock the cap securely in place. This cap is made with a receptacle h of sufficient capacity to contain the desired identifying paper or photograph or may have the owners name and address engraved in it.

I do not propose to confine myself to any special form of receptacle or lock, as both may be greatly varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

'Ihe combination with the tubular portion of a bicycle having an opening therefor of a cap fitting in said opening and a lock and key for securing it therein, said cap containing a pocket and clasp as and for the purpose set forth.
