SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581,276, dated April 27, 1897.

Writer or other Printing-Ribbons, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

My invention consists of novel means for attaching a printing-ribbon to areel, barrel, &c., especiallyof a type-writing machine, the

, same embodying, first, a catch on the end of the ribbon for engagement with the reel, (to. next, a cross-bar on the catch for connecting the latter with the ribbon; finally, a slotor recess in the reel, barrel, &c., for the location of the catch of the ribbon.

Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a reel having a printing-ribbon embodying my invention applied thereto, said ribbon having its horizontal portion in section. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section on line w as, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a view of the reel with a ribbon on the side opposite to Fig. 1, showing the ribbon disconnected from the reel. Fig. 4 represents a perspective view of the portion of the ribbon embodying my invention, one of the folds thereof being partly turned over.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

Referring to the drawings, A designates a reel for the printing-ribbon of a type-writing machine, and B designates the barrel thereof, the same having a slot 0 therein, said slot extending transversely of the length of said barrel. 1

D designates the printing-ribbon, the same having a portion E of one end turned back on itself, forming the fold F, within which is placed the cross-bar G. The portions of the ribbon that come in contact or lie upon the other are gummed, cemented, or otherwise secured together, so that they will not separate, whereby the cross-bar G retains its position in the fold F.

H designates a catch which is connected with said cross-bar G and projects therefrom outside of the fold F through the opening J in the latter, it being noticed that in order to connect the ribbon with the barrel B the catch is inserted into the slot 0 in the longitudinal direction thereof and then quarterturned, whereby the catch engages with the inner face of the barrel and attaches the ribbon to the reel, it being also evident that when the catch is again turned one-quarter the catch registers with the slot and so may be withdrawn through the latter, thus disconnecting the ribbon from the reel.

The catch consists of a somewhat T-shaped head, formed of the limbs K and necks L, the latter occupying the opening J in the fold of the ribbon and coming closely together, by which provision the fold of the ribbon lies flat on the barrel, avoiding buckling, wrinkling, or irregularity of winding of the ribbon on the barrel. Furthermore, the crossbar G is formed of a piece of wire bent into parallel lengths, each length terminating in one of the necks L and limbs K, said length, neck, and limbs being in the same plane, thus producing a simple, inexpensive, light, strong, and durable device for the purpose intended.

If desired, the number of slots 0 may be increased, as shown by the dotted lines, Fig.

3, so that a larger number of catches may be employed with the cross-bar G, but a single catch and slot are considered generally sufficient for the attachment of the ribbon in position, it being noticed that the slot does not interfere with the opening or shoulder M on the barrel for the reversing mechanism, the latter forming no part of the present invention, it being illustrated to indicate how the device may be employed without affecting the nature of said mechanism.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A fastening for an inking-ribbon, consisting of a crossbar of wire having its ends forming a T-shaped head adapted to enter a transversely-extending slot on a reel-barrel.

2. The combination of a reel-barrel having the slot 0 therein with a ribbon having a folded end, and an opening in the fold thereof and a cross-bar in said fold having a T-shaped head projecting through said opening and adapted to be inserted in said slot.
