SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 592,183, dated October 19, 1897.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, REUBEN S. WHITTIER, of Revere, and JOHN N. LANDERS, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Locking Gas-Fixtures, of which the following is a specification.

This invention, which relates to gas-fix-j tures, has for its object to produce an improved article of this class wherein the cock is locked in position when turned off, and may.

not be turned on again except by the release of the locking mechanism.

It frequently happens, with the common form of gas fixture or burner, that the cock turns loosely, and that in hurriedly or carelessly extinguishing a flame the person perand Fig. 4: is a horizontal section on line 4 4 of Fig. 1.

In the figures, d represents the casingof a gas-fixture provided with the usual vertical socket, and a cock 0t fitting therein, said cock being provided with the usual stud or pin a. The casingd is cut away or recessed on one side of the cock-socket in the ordinary manner, forming a horizontal stop-face 2, and vertical stop-faces 3 3, against which latter the said pin a bears andprevents the entire rotation of the cook a.

' The detent b is so constructed and adjusted that space is left between either of its cusps b b and'the stop-faces 3 3 sufficient to admit the pin a. When the cock is turned to its closed position, the said detent b springs automatically into place, and locks the said pin a. A pendent cord, chain, or similar member c is provided, whereby the spring-detent b may be depressed and the pin a released. The cook a, may then be turned to its open position, the pin a sliding over the upper surface of the detent band keeping it depressed until said cock is again turned off. The detent b is prevented from swinging sidewise, out of place, by the cusps b biwhich embrace and closely fit the exposed portion of the cook a, and its downward movement is limited by the flange a which acts as a stop to prevent the bending or breaking of the spring I).

We claim- A self-locking gas-fixture, comprising a I spring-supported detent formed to move laterally in the space between the face 2 and flange a and normally in position to engage the pin a when the cock is in its closed position, said detent being provided with a pendent operating device and arranged so that its downward movement by said device is limited by the flange of, while its upward movement by the spring is limited by the stop-face 2.
