SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 610,088, dated August 30, 1898.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FREDERICK SCHEERER, of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hitching Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the "accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof. 1

My invention relates to hitching devices; and it consists of the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter shown, described, and claimed.

Figure 1 is a front elevation, parts being broken away to illustrate the construction. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken approximately on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.

Referring by numerals to the drawings, the back piece 3 and the front piece 4 are connected by means of the side pieces 5 and 6, the top piece 7, and the bottom piece 8, thus forming a rectangular or square box. A corner-piece 9 is placed in each of the corners of the'box between the back piece 3 and the front piece 4. An opening 10 is formed through the center of the side piece 5. A shaft 11 is mounted through the centers of the back piece 3 and the front piece 4 and has a head 12 fixed upon its rear end and engaging the rear face of the back piece 3, said head being held in position by means of the screws 13, inserted through the head into the back piece 3. The disk 14 is loosely mounted upon the shaft 11 immediately in front of the back piece 3. The ring 15 is attached to the front face of the disk 14 by means of the screws 16, said ring being somewhat smaller than the disk 14 and arranged concentrically relative to the shaft 11. An opening or recess 17 is formed through the ring 15. The spring 18 is placed within the ring 15 with its inner end fixed to the shaft 11 and its outer end attached to the ring. The ring or loop 19 is placed upon the shaft 11, and the rope 20 is attached to said ring 19 and passes outwardly through the recess 17. The disk 21 Serial No. 654,041. (No model.)

is attached to the front edge of the ring 15 in any suitable manner, said disk 21 being of the same size as the disk 14. The rope 2O passes around the ring 15 several times and then outwardly through the opening 10 in the side piece 5, and the harness-snap 22 is attached to the outer end of the rope. The bolts 23 are inserted through the corners of the box and through the openings 24 in the corner-pieces 9 and into the manger or hitching-post, as required, to hold the box securely in position.

In the practical operation of the device the snap-hook 22 is connected to the bridle or halter in the ordinary way, and the tension of the spring 18 takes up the slack in the rope. When the rope is entirely unwound, the continued strain upon the rope will be exerted directly upon the shaft 11.

I claim-- The combination with the rectangular casing 7 provided with apertured blocks in its corners, through which blocks pass bolts that rigidly locate said casing, and which casing is provided with a transversely-arranged fixed shaft, of a pair of disks rotatably arranged upon said shaft within the casing, a ring 15 separating said disks to form a winding-drum, a convolutespring within said ring, one end of said spring being fastened to the ring and the opposite end to the fixed shaft, a ring 19 rotatably' arranged upon said shaft and located in a clear space beneath said spring, and a cord having its inner end fixed to the lastmentioned ring, its length being wound upon the ring 15 between the disks and its outer end passing outwardly through an aperture in the casing, substantially as specified.
