Bc it known that I, WILLIAM B. HAYDEN, of;Columbus, in the county1 of Franklin, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and improved Bit; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact-description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure `I is a view of the improved bit, one part of which is shown in section. v i

Figure 2 is an edge view of onehalf of the bit, with the upper portion ofthe cheek-piece broken away.

Figures 3, 4, and 5, show the construction of therein-rings and cheek-pieces.

This invention relates to an improvement in the construction of bridle and harness bits, whereby their manufacture is greatly facilitated and cheapeued, -and the bits made in a neatcr and more substantial manner than hitherto; I

rlhe nature of my invention consists in constructing the rein-rings, cheek-pieces, andjoiuted mouth-pieces, in separate parts, and connecting these parts together by passing the cheek-pieces through eyes which are formed on the mouth-pieces and rings, and securing the whole together by bands or collars applied to the cheekpieces, as will be hereinafter described. To enable others skilled in the art to understand my invention, I will describe its construction and operation.

In the accompanying drawings, A A represent tw'o sections, which are'linked together so as to form a mouth-piece. The ends of this mouth-piece are hatten-ed, rounded, and perforated, so as to form 'eyes gig,'which.

are received between corresponding eyes or perforated jaws c c, formed on the rein-rings. C-C represent` the cheek-pieces, which are each constructed with a. cylindrical pivot portion, c, near 'the centre thereof, which terminates at its upper end inan enlarged angc, Z, having al notch, b', formed in it, and .which terminates' .at its lower end in anannula'r groove, z', adapted for receiving around ita band or collar, d, shown in iig. 1. The rings B B are cach constructed with a key or tenon, a, upon it, which is adapted to fit snugly into'the corresponding recess or notch bf which is made in the flange b, as shown in the drawings.

The several parts constituting the bit 'are put together by inserting the eye-pieces g on the mouth-pieces A, between the jaws or eye-pieces on the rings B. The cheek-pieces C lare then dropped through the eyes c c g, so that the keys a will enter the notches IJ in the flanges b, after which the bands cl are secured in their grooves t', thus uniting the several parts firmly together, and forming the pivots for allowing the rings andv cheek-pieces to articulate freely in the eye-pieces y. I I 'i I Hitherto each rein-ring and cheek-piece was cast in Vone piece, and pivoted to the end ofthe mouth-piece by closing the open-eye joint on the latter piece, similar to the mode shown in iig. 2 for connecting together the two pieces forming the mouthpiece. By my invention the eyes, which are formed on the outer ends of the mouth-pieces, are solid or unbroken, and so also are the corresponding eyes which are formed'yon the reinrings; consequently greater strength is obtained than under the old method."` My bit is composed of a greater number of pieces than the old form of bits, but this is a decided advantage uudei` the construction shown, as it admits of a greater number of pieces being moulded in a iask of'a given sine; and it is found that the bits can be finished,A

when made as described, much cheaper and more conveniently than the old bits.

Having described my invention, what I' claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, ist-- 1. A bridle or harness bit, which has its reinrings attached to the mouth-piece by passing the cheek-pieces through solid eyes formed on said parts, substantially as described.

2. A bit which is composed of separately formed parts A, '13, C, and d, put together substantially as described.
