America, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Lid-Supportin g Devices; and I to the box.

do declare the following to be a full,clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. 7 r My invention relates to improvements in adjustable lid-supporting devices especially intended for use in connection with cigarboxes, but which may be advantageously em ployed in connection with hinged lids or hinged parts generally whose use requires that they be supported in the open position. My object is to provide a device of this class which shall be simple inv construction, economical in cost, reliable, durable, and midcient in use; and to these ends the. invention consists of the features hereinafter described and claimed, all of which will be fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof. 7

In the drawings, Figure 1 illustrates the device in use, two diiferent forms being applied Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the form of the device shown at the right in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an elevation viewed from the opposite side. Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line a: 01;, Figs. 2 and 3. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the inner disk, the forked arm being cut on the line y y, Fig. 4.. Figs. 6 and 7 illustrate a modification adapted to hold a priceslip. This form of the device is shown in use at the left in Fig. 1. It must be understood that two of the deyices, as shown in Fig. 1, would never be required. They are both shown in this figure to illustrate their use without repeating the box view.

Similar characters indicating corresponding parts in the views, let the numeral 5 designate a disk-shaped part having a series of recesses 5 arranged in the form of a circle. This part 5 is provided with a bracket-arm 6,

slotted to straddle the side 13 of the box out side of the lid, being placed in position from above. Parts 5 and 6 extend parallel with each other and straddle the end 12 of the box, the bend 7 engaging the upper edge of the box e'ud. Hence the bracket composed of the parts 5 and 6 may be said to comprise a double fork arranged to simultaneously engage or straddlethe parts extending at right angles to each other-that is to say, the side and one end of the box. attached a disk-shaped part 8, provided with a tooth 8*, adapted to enter the counterpart recesses5 of the part 5. The part 8 is provided with an arm 9, whose upper extremity 9 is bent inwardly and forked to straddle the end edge of the box-lid 10. The engaging disk-shaped parts 5 and 8 are so connected as to allow the one part to turn on the other part, the tooth S slipping from one recess 5 to another during the operation. These two parts are so adjusted that the box may be lifted by the lid without movement, since it is often advantageous to lift cigar-boxes by the open lid. The arm 9 is provided with an outwardly-projecting hook 9, which forms a convenient thumb-piece for removingor attaching the forked part 9 to the lid of the box. This is done by bending the arm 9 outwardly.

In applying the device the. lid of the box is raised to the vertical position, and while the part 9 engages the lid the device is moved downwardly into position, the side of the box engaging the slot 6 of the part 6, while the part 6 passes inside the end and the part 5 outside the end of the box, or the device may be first applied to the body of the box, after which the lid is raised and the arm 9 bent outwardly to allow the hook 9 to engage the edge of the lid. After the device is applied the parts 5 and 6 are securely anchored on the body of the box, and the lid may be adjuste'd to occupy any desired position by turning the disk 8 on the disk 5, the tooth of the former slipping from one recess to another of the latter. The device shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4: may be applied equally well to either the right or left hand end of the lid.

In the construction shown in Figs. 6and 7 the lid-engaging feature is pivoted to the end of the arm 9, as shown at 9 and comprises asmall arm 14, adapted to engage the rear To the part 5 is pivotally surface of the lid, and a small frame 14", adapted to engage the front surface of the lid and arranged to hold a slip of paper 15, upon which is indicated the price of the cigars exposed in the box. In changing this form of the device from one end of the lid to the other it is evident that it will be necessary to turn the member 14 on its pivot 9 in order that the price-slip holder may always remain in front. In other respects this modification is exactly the same as the construction shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4, the lower portion of the modification being partly shown at the left of Fig. 1.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. An adjustable support for box-lids and other hinged parts, comprising a bracket having a double fork adapted to simultaneously straddle the two parts extending at right angles to each other, and an arm adjustably attached to the bracket at one extremity, its opposite extremity being fashioned to grasp the lid, whereby the latter may be supported in any desired position.

2. The combination of a bracket having a double fork adapted to engage the corner parts of a box, and an arm adjustably attached to said bracket and adapted to engage and sup port the lid orhinged part of the box or other object.

3. The combination of a double forked bracket adapted to engage the two parts forming the corner of a box, and an arm pivotally attached to the bracket, one of the said parts being provided with a tooth or detent adapted to engage a plurality of recesses formed in the other part, the pivot-arm being adapted to engage and support the lid of the box.

4. The combination of a double forked bracket composed of a disk and a slotted part united by a top bend, and an arm pivoted on the disk, one of the said parts being provided with a tooth or detent adapted to engage recesses formed in the other part.

5. The combination of a double forked bracket adapted to engage the body of the box or other object, and an arm pivoted on the bracket at one extremity, its opposite extremity being provided with parts embracing the lid of the box on opposite sides.

6. The combination .of a double forked bracket adapted to engage the body of a box or other object, and an arm pivoted on the bracket at one extremity, its opposite extremity being provided with parts adapted to embrace the lid of the box on opposite sides, one of the said parts consisting of a frame adapted to hold a price-slip.

7. The combination of a double forked bracket adapted to engage the body of a box or other object, and an arm pivoted on the bracket at one extremity, its opposite extremity being pnovided with parts adapted to em brace the lid of the box on opposite sides, and a thumb-piece for the purpose set forth.

8. The combination of a doubleforked bracket adapted to engage the body of a box or other object, an arm pivoted on the bracket at one extremity, and a device pivot-ally attached to the opposite extremity of the arm and adapted to embrace the box-lid on oppo-' site sides, one of the embracing parts consisting of a frame adapted to hold a price-slip.
