Be it known that I, WILLIAM 'I-IUEY, ot' Galena, Kent county, Maryland, have 'invented a new and useful Box for Fruit or Vegetables; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming partlhereof, and to the letters of let`erence marked thereon, in which drawingsi 'i Figure 1 is a perspective of two boxes one within the other as they are packed for transportation when empty.

I Figure 2 is a vertical section of the same on the line :1;1/ of iig. 1.

Figure 3 is a perspective of the lid.

Figure 4 is a perspective ot' the lock, full size.

The size of the boxes may be varied at will, but they should be of uniform size, or yall ot' any one set il uniform, so as to pack well one within another when empty, as represented in iig. 1.

In the drawings, cr are thin slats ot' wood; 'b is a woodenrim to which the slats a are fastened at top. The rim b is grooved out on the under side, forming a rabbet of such depth that the ends of the slats ya come about Hush with the inside of the rim. The rim is strengthened with rivets c, igffh'one at each corner. The slats a are fastened at their lower ends Vto a `wooden bottom, d. v The corners e aree'achiof one piece, they beingformed by rabbetiug a solid block to the thickness of thel slats. The middle slatsf on two 'opposite sides of' the box are notched on the inside as at g, tig l, and each of the other two opposite sides of the box is provided withva, lock, H, which consists of a plate, It, a plate, and a spring, l, the plate being hooked at each ond in opposte directions and being attached toplate H by a rivet, K. The spring Z may be either India rubber or a. metallic spiral, as in fig. 2, 01.' HM Spring. A key-hole, m, is made in the plate l. n, fig. 2, is the key,` which is simply a pieceof Wire. p, fig. 3, is the lid, which is made of slats fastened to cross-pieces, and provided with a staple, g, and a. lip, 1', which take into the hooks of the plate z' and thus fasten the lid on the box. If desired a lip may be substituted for the staple q. When empty, theseiboxes, to any number desired, may be packed one Within another, as represented in figs. 1 .and 2. When thus packed a lid is applied to the last of the series, and all the boxes fastened together by the automaticV action of the locks. The remaining lids` are packed separately. All the parts respectively of which theboxes'arc composed are made so as to be interchangeable.4 v i It is obvious that the slats composing box or lid may be varied in number and size. The locks described may be applied to baskets. i

Having thusdescribed my invention, I claim, and desircto secure by Letters Patent*- 1. As a new article ot' manufacture, the fruit and vegetable-box Wit-h the lid, all constructed substantially as setforth. y

2. The lock H, composed of the plate "h, with a key-hole, the hooked plate t', and the-spring l, arranged substantially as set forth. v
