UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
OTTO BUSSENIUVS, OF YORK, Y.
BATH-TUB.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 755,109, dated March 22, 1904.
Application led August 24, 1903.
To allwhom it m/afy con/cern,.-
Be it known that I, O'r'ro BUssENrUs, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bath-Tubs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in bath-tubs.
The object of the invention is to provide a bath-tub having in connection therewith means by which the same may be quickly and easily cleansed.
Another object is to provide means by which an antiseptic liquid may, if desired, be intro. duced into the cleansing-water to more thoroughly cleanse and disinfect the tub.
A further object is to provide'a cleansing device of this character which will be simple, inexpensive, and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described, and
particularly pointed out in the appended claims. .s
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional View of a tub embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail fragmentary View of a portion of the rim of the tub. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional View of a modified form of the device, and Fig. 5
is a cross-sectional view thereof.
Referring more particularly to Figs..,1, 2, and 3 of the drawings, 1 denotes the tub, which may be of any desired shape and constructed of metal, porcelain, or other suitable material. At the upper edge of the tub is formed a rim having downwardly-curving flanges 2 and 3 projecting from each side of the same. In the present instance the rim and flanges are shown as being cast integral with the body portion of the tub; but it is obvious that they may be formed separate and connected to the tub in any suitablel manner. In
Serial No. 170,570- (No model.)
. casting the rim and flanges an endless channel 4 is formed through the rim. 'Extending entirely around the tub and communicating with` said channel are a series of discharge openings or ports 5, which open into the tub beneath the ange and are arranged so water flowing through the channel will be discharged against the sides of the tub. The end of the flange 2 projects below the discharge ends of these ports, as shown, to prevent the outward splashing of the water. 6 denotes the watersupply pipe, having at its end the usual faucet 7 for filling the tub. 8 denotes a short branch pipe connected to the supply-pipe in rear of the faucet 7 and communicating with the channel 4 through a short inlet-port 9, formed in the rim. 10 denotes a cut-ofi' valve formed in the pipe 8, whereby the water from the supply-pipe 6 may be let into or cut off from the channel 4. l
In hotels, public baths, and like places it is often desirable that the tubs be disinfected, and to this end a suitable antiseptic liquid is introduced .into the cleansing-water. The antiseptic liquid may be introduced into the water by providing a tank 12 to contain the same and connecting said tank with the pipe 8 below the valve 10 by a pipe 13, in which is arranged a valve 14.
In Figs. 4 and 5 is shown a modified form of the device for use in bath-tubs already constructed and now in use. In this form the tub 18L is provided with a rim 1b, having an inneroverhangingange 1c, and between this iiange and the upper inner edge of thev tub is disposed a pipe or'tube 15, provided with perforations 16, arranged'to direct the discharge from the pipe against the sides of the tub. Water and antiseptic liquid are supplied tothe pipe 15 vby an arrangement of valved pipes and a tank similar tol that shown in Fig. 1 and hereinbefore described.
Bath-tubs embodying the herein-described cleansing device are preferably provided .with waste-pipes and discharge-vents of somewhat larger size than usual to more readily carry of the cleaning-water and also preferably have their bottoms inclined toward said vent to a greater degree than'in common construction.
The operation is as follows: When it is desired to cleanse the tub before or after using, the valve 10 is opened and water from the supply-pipe is admitted to the channel 4 or pipe 15, as the case may be, and from which it is dischargedv against the sides of the tub, thoroughly rinsing and cleansing the same. When it is desired to also disinfect the tub, the valve 14 is opened and the antiseptic iiuid from the tank l2 permitted to iow into the branch pipe 8, where it mixes with the cleansing-water and is discharged therewith against the sides of the tub.
From the foregoing description', taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readilyr understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the forni, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the principle oi` sacriicing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv l. A bath-tub having means arranged around its upper edge whereby water and other iuid may be discharged against `the sides thereofl to cleanse the same, a water-supply pipe, a valved branch pipe connecting said supply-pipe With said discharging means, a tank or receptacle containing an antiseptic solution and a valved pipe connecting said tank with said branch water-supply pipe, whereby an antiseptic fluid may be introduced and mixed with the water in said pipe and discharged ltherewith against the sides of said tub, substantially as described.
2. A bath-tub provided with an injector for discharging water against the sides thereof, a water-supply pipe, a container for an antiseptic solution, and valve mechanism for supplying either Water or solution to the said injector or combining the same so that the antiseptic fluid will be discharged with the Water against the sides of the tub.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
