Description

`DOUGLAS BLY, OF MACON, GEORGIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN -PISTON-ROD ADJOUSTERS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 78,045, dated May 19, 1868.
To all whom t may concern: A
Be it `known that I, DoUGLAs BLY, of Macon, in the county of Bibb and State of Georgia, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Sucker-Rod Heads or Clamps for Deep Wells, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective view of my improved device with the connecting-rod inplace. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same as applied to the walking-beam.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both gures.
In ordinary deep wells, such as oil-wells,
. the rod that connects the sucker-rod with the walking-beam attaches to the latter by means of a swivel and a stirrup, or in such a-manner that but little, if any, vertical adjustment of the rod can be obtained. Much diculty arises from this source, for the reason that the sucker-rod has frequently to be raised or lowered to pump at different elevations, and for other purposes; and in so raising or lowering the sucker-rod it is necessary to replace the said connecting-rod by one either longer or shorter, as the case may be. This, it is obvious, is a labor of considerable difficulty and expense.
It is the object of my invention to obviate this diiiiculty by the employment of a head or clamp connecting with the walking-beam, of such construction as to enable the connectingrod to be adjusted up or down indefinitely, and at the same time adapt itself to the proper vertical position, as the beam works up and down, by means of -a suitable joint, as hereinafter described.
In the drawings, A indicates the head or clamp, B, the connectingrod connecting the sucker-rod with the walking-beam, and C the walking-beam itself.
The head or clamp consists of two leaves or plates, a b, clamping the connecting-rod firmly between by means of bolts and nuts c c, or in some equivalent manner. It also has bearings d d, or some equivalent joint, for connecting with the walking-beam in such a manner that, as the beam works up and down, the said joint will allow the head or clamp to turn to adapt itself to the vertical position of the rod without binding.
By this arrangement it will be perceived that the connecting-rod B can be adj usted up and down in the clamp to any position desired. -It is only necessary to loosen the bolts c c, and raise or lower, as may be necessary, and then tighten again. There is no limit, therefore, to the vertical adjustment except the length of the rod itself.
In this manner I am enabled to make the necessary adjustment in deep wells without removing or replacing the connecting-rod B, unless the adjustment required is beyond the capacity of said rod, in which case, as is usual, sections of the suckerrod itself are added or removed 5 but under all circumstances I am enabled to produce that amount of adjustment which is required in centering the piston in the vpump-barrel, &c., which is not very great in degree, but which requires great accuracy, and which cannot be easily accomplished by simply substituting one rod in the place of another, having no adjustment at the top.
The joint connecting the clamp with the beam, combined with this vertical adjustment, is eifective in preventing any binding as the beam goes up and down, and in insuring the best action of the projecting rod.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The clamp A, combining both a free vertical adjustment of the rod and a joint for connectin g with the walking-beam for insuring a free play, substantially as herein set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DOUGLAS BLY.
