WILLIAM HOUGH'ION, OF BATH, MAINE.
u COMBINED MARKING-PEG AND\CENTER-IPUNCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 15, 1906. Serial No. 301,296.
This invention relates to improvements in. comblned marking-pegs and center-punches.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character by means of which rivet or other holes may be transferred from a templet or pattern and accuratelycentered on the sheet or plate to be drilled or punched out.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter de scribed and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional viewthrough the outer tube or casing of the tool, showing the punch in a retracted position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the punch in aprojected position. Fig. 3 is a detail side view of the punch, and Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line ,4 4 in Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawin'gs, 1 denotes-the punch, which is preferably cylindrical in form and is provided on one end'w'ith the usual punching-point 2. Substantially midway between the ends of the punch is arranged a transverselyedisposed aperture 3, through which is inserted the stop-pin 4, the ehds of which project slightly beyond thefsides of the punch, as
shown. A short distance below the aperture 3 and at right angles thereto is formed a second aperture 5, in which is placed a stop-pin 6, which projects slightly beyond the sides of the punch.
Arranged on the punch 1 is a marking-peg 7, said peg being here shown in the form of a In the upper end of the tubular marking-peg 7 is arranged a guide-collar 8, said collar being held in position in the tube by means of a set-screw 9,
" which is passed through the side of the tube -'and-.enters the collar 8, as shown. In the lower end of the collar get diametrically opposite points are arranged vertically-dis posed slots or recesses 10,, which when the to be engaged by the projecting ends or the upper stop-pin 4, arranged in said punch. In the lower edge of the collar 8 at right angles to the slots or recesses 10 are formed diaadapted to be engaged by the projecting ends of the pin 4 when the punch is in a projected position, the punch being slightly turned as understood.
Adjacent to the lower end of the tubular marking-peg 7 is a guidecollar 13, said collar pin 6, with which the same is engaged, is a collar 15, between which and the guide-collar 13 is arranged a coil-spring 16, the tension of which is normally exerted to retract the punch 1 to the position shown in Fig. l of the drawings.
In using the tool as a markin'geg the punch is in a retracted position, as sii Fig. 1, thus permitting the lower end of the marking-pegjto be inserted through the holes in the templet or pattern which has been previously laid on thework, thus marking said holes on the plate or sheet beneath the templet, it being understoodthat the end of said peg 7 is previously dipped into a suitable marking solution. When the peg is to be used to transfer holes in the tem l'et bycenter-punch marks, the centers 0 said holes may. be accurately marked by striking the up er end of the punch with a hammer or ma let, which will force the same downwardly against the tension of the spring 16, causing the point to mark the center of the holes. When it is desired to use the punch without the marking-peg, the punch is projected beond the lower end of the latter and locked in said projected position by turning the punch to bring the projecting ends of the'pln into engagement with the notches 12 in the lower Fig. 2 of the drawings.
From the fore oing description, taken in connectionwith t e accompanying drawings,
tion will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion,
own in Patented July 3, ions.
punch is in a retracted position are adapted metrically opposite notches 12, which are thelsameis Projected t ause the ends of the pin to ahne with the notches 12, as will be being secured in place by means of a set-screw 14. Arranged on the punch 1 below the lower end of the guide-collar 8, as clearly shown the construction and operation of the invenand the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1., In a device of the character described, the combinationwith a-sleeve or tube, of a punch slidably mounted therein, a slotted guide-collar arranged in the upper end of said tube, stop-pins arranged in said punch to engage the slots in said guide-collar, and a spring to retract said punch, substantially as described.
2. In a device of tl'ievcharacter described, the combination with a sleeve or tube, of a punch slidably mounted therein, an upper guide-collar arranged in the upper end of said tube, said collar having formed in its lower end Vertically-disposed slots and notches arranged at diametrically opposite points, means to secure said collar in said sleeve, upper and lower horizontally-disposedpins arranged at right angles in said punch to engage the slots and notches in said collar, a retracting-spring arranged on said punch, and
means to hold said spring in place, substantially as described.
3. ln a device of the character described, the combination with a sleeve or tube, of a punch slidably mounted therein, an upper guide-collar a rrang'cd in the upper end 01 said tube, said collar having formed in its lower end vertically-tlisposcd slots and notches arranged at diametricallyopposite points, a setscrew to hold said collar in place in said tube, upper and lower horizontally-disposed pins arranged at right angles in and projecting slots and notches in said collar, a guide-collar fixed in the lower end of said tube, a collar loosely mounted on said punch below said lower pin and a coiled retracting-spring arranged on said punch between said iixed lower collar and said loose collar, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
