SHAPER-GUARD.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, FREDERICK BOHLING and HERMAN A. ALBRECHT, citizens of the United States, residing at Sheboygan, in the when desired entirely removed from the machine and replaced-and adjusted without disturbing any of the other parts.
WVith the above and other objects'in view the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated, and claimed. 4
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the guard looking toward the end of the arbor or mandrel and showing the means for adjusting and clamping the guard in place. Fig. 2 is a diametrical section through the guard and parts contiguous thereto, showing the arbor or mandrel in elevation. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary plan view of the guard and its retainer or clamp, the latter being adjusted to a position which will permit the guard to be removed. Fig. 4 is an edge view of the guard-retainer. Fig; 5 is a detail sectional perspective of portions of the guard and its step or seat.
In the drawings, 1 designates an arbor or mandrel having a shoulder 2, against which the cutter-head or former or shaper 3 is clamped, said parts being of the usual construction and arrangement.
In carrying out the present invention we employ a collar or sleeve 4, which is threaded upon the mandrel 1, as shown in Fig. 2, and which is exteriorly threaded to receive an internally-threaded seat or step 5, which by reason of its threaded engagement with the collar 4- is adjustable lengthwise thereof for the purpose of correspondingly adjusting the guard and regulating the distance between said guard and the machine-table in accordance with the thickness of the work.
The collar 4 may bear directly against the cutter head or shaper for holding the latter in place on the mandrel.
The adjustable seat of step 5 is provided with an annular groove or rabbet 6 in the outer margin of that surface which is disposed away from the shaper or former, as shown in Fig. 2, and is also provided with notches or sockets 7, extending inwardly from such groove or rabbet and in reality forming inward extensions of the rabbet or groove, said notches or sockets being adapted to receive inwardly-projecting lugs 8 on the guard, which is representedat 9.
The guard is of disk shape in plan and of a thickness approximately equal to the depth of the groove 6 and the sockets or notches 7, so as to bring the outer surface of the guard flush, or practically so, with the outer surface of the adjustable seat or step 5. The body ofthe guard is clamped upon the adjustable seat or step 5 by means of a retainer 10, which is shown in the form of a jam-nut having a threaded engagement with the collar 4 and adapted to be screwed down tightly against the guard and step or seat for holding the guard firmly in position. The j amnut or retainer 10 is of a diameter slightly less than the central opening in the guard, so that the guard may be slipped over the retainer in removing and replacing said guard. The retainer is provided in its periphery with" notches 11, extending entirely across the periphery, as shown in Fig. 4, and corresponding in number and location to the lugs 8 on the guard and the notches or sockets 7 in the seat or step 5. When said retainer is turned to the position shown in Fig. 3 wherein the notches of the step and retainer are in line with the lugs 8 of the guard, the guard may be removed, the lugs 8 passing outward through the notches 11 of the retainer. When, however, the guard is in place, by turning the retainer 10 the notches 11 thereof are carried out of alinement with the lugs 8 of the guard, and thus the guard is securely clamped against the adjustable seat or step 5.
12 and 13 represent a collar and nut, respectively, for clamping the several parts of the device hereinabove described.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that by loosening the guard-retainer 10 the step or seat 5 may be adjusted lengthwise of the collar 4 for the purpose of regulating the distance between the guard and the table which supports the work, so as to bring the annular flange 14 of the guard into proper relation to the Work and table, after Which 5 the retainer is tightened. It will also be understood that by turning the retainer so as to bring the notches thereof in line with the lugs 8 of the guard the latter may be removed by slipping the same over the retainer and off the end of the mandrel, this being accomplished without disturbing any of the other parts of the device.
We claim 1. The combination with a mandrel, of a collar thereon, a guard, a guardseat or step adjustable on the collar, and clamping means associated with said collar for holding and releasing the guard and permitting the latter to be removed without removing the clamping means or disturbing the adjustment of the step or seat.
2. The combination with a mandrel, of a threaded collar thereon, a guard, a guard seat or step having an adjustable threaded engagement with said collar, and a threaded guard-retainer on said collar provided with means for engaging and clamping the guard but permitting the guard to be removed Without disturbing the retainer or moving the step.
3. The combination with a mandrel, of a threaded collar thereon, a guard, a guard seat or step having a threaded and adjustable connection with said collar and provided with 35 a rabbet in which a portion of the guard is.
