To all whom; it may concern:

. Be it known that I, MATTHEW I. SULLivAN,

a citizen of the United States, reslding at the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Document-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

@My invention relates to that class of holders for documents and papers in which a back ,is provided with folding flaps, forming as a whole. an inclosing envelop, said holder having a suitable encircling cincture.

The object of my invention is to provide a safe, convenient, and capacious documentholder; and-to this end my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the holder which I shall now fully describe I v by reference to the accompanying drawings,

The holder com rises the back 1, the side flaps 2, the end aps 3, and the encircling band 4.

The back 1, in the best construction of the holder, is rigid or stiff. It may be made of cardboard, pasteboard, papier-mzrch, wood,

metal, or of any suitable material which is relatively stiff or The flaps 2 and 3 are joined to the back in any suitable manner, so that they may be folded over it. In ractice these flaps are best made in a sing e piece with a common center 5, which is pasted to the stiff back 1, so that the exterior of the holder will present a uniform appearance. The flaps are flexible and largely overlapping, so that they may readily fold over the increasing contents of the holder or over contents of varied thickness, thereby giving the holder such capacity as may be required. They may be of any suitable material-such as tough paper or buckram, or other fiber, fabric, or material.

The band 4 may be of any suitable material and may be elastic or non-elastic. In many cases, especiaily when the file is complete and made permanent, this latter use will be proved serviceable. fore shown the documents 8 placed under the keeper 7 in order to illustrate its utility in this regard. g

The band 4 is provided with any suitable fastening device of a character which will permit one end to be adjustably engaged by the other, so that it may be drawn tight about the envelop and clam ed in this pos1- tion. The ftfaning 9, whic I have shown, indicates a common form of clamp or buckle.

In order to render the holder complete, I cut an openin with an entrance-slit 10 in the outer coverin 5 of the back to receive an inscription or ing-card 11 to carry the title of the contents, which card may be readily inserted and removed.

To use the folder, the band 4 is unfastened at its ends and loosened, and the flaps 2 and 3 are laid back. The documents are then laid upon the back, either on top of or under, as is preferable, the keeper-loop 7. Then the flaps are folded to a closed position upon the documents and the ends of the band 4 are brought around to encircle the envelop. One end is passed through the fastening 9 of the other end and is drawn up tight, whereby the keeper-loo 7 is bound down upon the documents an the band itself tightly clasps the envelop. The stiff back gives rigidity to the package, holds it in neat and good shape, and protects the contents.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A document-holder consisting of an envelop composed of a back and folding flaps I have therer forming the front thereof, and a relatively wide fastening-band freely slidable through opposite slots adjacent the edges of the back and forniin a keeper-loo on the inner face of the back etwe en said s ots, the ends of the band encircling said envelop.

2. A documentholder consisting of an envelop composed of a back and folding flaps forming the front thereof, and a relatively wide unattached fastening-bandfreely slidable through and forming, a kee er-loop on the inner face of the back, the ends of the band encircling said envelop, and said ends being provided with complemental means for adjustably securing them.

3. A document-holder comprisin a rigid back, flexible flaps foldable over t e ed es of the back to form an envelop, and a re atively wide fastening-band freely slidable through slotted portions of the back and forming a keeper-loop on the inner face of the back, the ends of the band encircling the envelop, and provided with means for adjustab y securing them.

4. A document-holder comprising an envelop formed with a rigid back, flexible foldable flaps forming the front, said flaps having a common center covering the outer face of the rigid back, an opening with an entrance-slit in said center coverin to receive 1 a title card, and a fasteningand freely slidable through and forming a keeper-loop on the inner face of the back, its ends encircling the envelop and rovided with means for adjustably securing t em.
