Be it known that I, JACOB RUPPEL, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trousers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing. This invention relates to trousers and pants particularly trousers for men, and the invention has for its object to provide a pair of trousers with novel means whereby the waist band of the trousers can be adjusted to fit persons of various sizes.

My improvement is particularly designed for ready made clothes, and aims to dispense with the altering of the trousers to fit persons who are corpulent or deformed about the waist. To this end, I have provided a pair of trousers with side slits and a waist belt, whereby the waist band of a pair of trousers can be made to snugly fit a person and present a neat appearance.

The detail construction entering into my improvement will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims, and referring to the drawing forming part of this specification, like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of a pair of trousers constructed in accordance with my invention, illustrating the same. with a contracted waist band, Fig.- 2 is a similar view illustrating the waist band of a pair of trousers expanded, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of my improvement, illustrating a pair of trousers and under drawers in dotted lines.

In the accompanying drawing, 1 designates the legs of a pair of trousers having a seat portion 2 and a waist band 3.

My invention resides in providing a substantially V-shaped out-away portion 4 at the upper ends of the seams 5 or adjacent to the waist band 3 of the trousers. In thus cutting-away the trousers upon the sides I provide a rear waist portion 6 and a front waist portion 7, the latter being divided 1n front, as at 8, similar to an ordinary pair of trousers.

The outer sides of the rear waist portion 6 adjacent to the cut-away portion 4 are provided with tabs 9 carrying buckles 10. The edges of the front waist portion 7 are provided with straps 11, these straps being adjustably held in the buckles 10 whereby the opening 4 can be opened or closed any desired width.

The inner sides of the rear waist portion 6 of the trousers adjacent to the openings 4 are provided with two straps 12, the fixed ends of said straps being of a suflicient width, as at 14, to cover the opening 4, and preventing the nether garments worn by a person from being exposed. The straps 12 constitute a belt having a conventional form of buckle 15, said belt surrounding the front part of a persons body and retaining the rear waist portion 6 in position, while the front waist portion 7 is held in position by the straps 11 connecting with the buckles 10. To further retain the front waist portion 7 snugly upon a persons body, I provide the inner sides of the front waist portion 7 with a plurality of straps or loops 16 through which the straps 12 of the belt are adapted to pass. The under drawers or garments 17, (see Fig. 3) are also provided with straps or loops 18 through which the straps 12 of the belt pass, the straps or loops 18 serving to hold the under drawers or garments in a comfortable position upon a persons body.

Onaccount of the slitting of the sides of a pair of trousers, I have found it necessary to shift the side pockets 19, said pockets being disposed at aslight angle with relation to the seams 5 of a pair of trousers.

From the illustration of my invention, it will be observed that the waist band of a pair of trousers can be enlarged or contracted according to the waist measurement of a persons body, and that a pair of trousers can be easily adjusted to conform to the waist of either stout or thin persons.
