' the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State'of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Cleaners, of which the following is a specification.

- This invention relates to improvements in a device to be used for cleaning and polishing window-panes, mirrors, and the like and for cleaning other surfaces,

and it consists in certain peculiarities of the construc- I tion, novel arrangement, and operation of the various parts thereof, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.

The objects of the invention are to provide a device of the abovenamed character, which shall be simple and inexpensive in construction, strong, durable, and effective in operation and so made that it can be operated by means of a handle, which maybe adjusted to suitable lengths so as to adapt the device for use on the upper or lower Windowsashes to be cleaned, or which may be used in the hand of the operator similar to a brush or cloth.

A further object of the invention is to provide means for securely holding a pad of fibrous material on the body of the cleaner in such a manner that it may be bodily removed therefrom, or the external layers thereof may be "removed one at a time.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be disclosed in the subjoined description and explanation.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention pertains to make and use the same I will now proceed to describe it, referring to the accompanying drawing, in whichthe figure is a perspective view of a window cleaner embodying my invention, showing the parts in their positions ready for use and illustrating the handle shortened for the convenience of illustration.

Referring to the drawing1 designates the body of the cleaner, which is preferably made of wood and redtangular in shape, as shown. Secured transversely on the body 1 at about its middle is a block 9, which is provided on its upper surface near each of its ends with screw-eyes 10, which are adapted to receive the outwardly bent free ends of the handle extensions 2, each of which is, by preference, made of yielding or spring wire, and have their other ends secured in suitable openings in the lower end of the tubular portion 3 of the handle, which tubular partmay be made of any suitable material and of the desired length. Movably located in the upper portion of the tubular part 3 is another portion 5 of the handle, which is provided with a number of openings 5 to receive one end of a spring catch 4, which is adapted to engage with its same time the outer or moistened sheets of the free portion the upper part 3 of the handle, thereby holding the sections 3 and 5 in engagement with one another. It is apparent that the spring catch 4 may be removed from one of the lower openings 5 and inserted in one of the upper ones, or vice versa, when it is desired to shorten or lengthen the handle, which may be done by telescoping the part 5 with the part 3 which, as before stated, is tubular. Secured to the upper surface of the body 1 on each side of the transverse block 9 is a plate 8, to each of which ishinged another plate 8, on the free end of each of which is secured a transverse bar 6 used for clamping the ends of the pad 11, which is preferably composed of sheetsof paper superimposed one on the other, but which may be made of other suitable material. The body 1 is provided near each of its ends with an upwardly extending screw-bolt 7, which pass through suitable openings in the plates 8' and engage nuts 7, which are employed in conjunction with said bolts to press the plates 8 towards the body so as to cause the transverse bars 6 to clamp the ends of the pad 11 against the body, as shown in the drawing; When it is desired to remove the pad bodily from the body of the cleaner, it is apparent that the nuts 7 may be loosened on their screw-bolts 7 which will permit the bars 6 to be moved from the body andthe pad withdrawn, when a new one may be inserted, after which its ends which are turned up over the ends of the body may be held in position by the bars 6 by again tightening said screws.

By employing a cleaner constructed according to my invention and as above described and shown in 'the drawing, it is obvious that the handle consisting of the members 2, 3 and 5 may be detached from the body by simply pressing the extension members 2 towards each other, which will disengage their lower ends from the screw-eyes, when it is apparent that the cleaner may be manipulated by the operator grasping the block 9 with his hand. In using the cleaner, I prefer to employ a pad 11 consisting of numerous sheets of paper laid one on the other, and may moisten the outer sheet or sheets with a suitable solution, such as a mixture of water, alcohol and ammonia, when by rubbing the glass or window-pane, the stains thereon will be quickly and thoroughly removed and at the (1 will usually be worn off incident to the friction in the operation of rubbing, when the undersheets or layers of the pad will be exposed to the glass for drying and polishing the same. If, however, the moistened or outer sheets should not be worn off, it is evident that they can be readily removed by tearing them at the places where they are clamped by the cross-bars 6 on the upper surface of the body of the cleaner.
