COMBINED FURNITURE LEG AND CIAS'IEB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Hatch 3, 1908.
Application filed May 16, 1907. Serial No. 874,028.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER Hrmnns, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Furniture 141558 and Casters, of which the following is a clear, and exact description,- reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a combined leg and caster for articles of furniture and it has for its object to provide a device of this character whereby the articles of furniture, when supplied with a desired number of the legs and casters, may be susce tible of remaining lowered osition without the liability of becoming shi ted and also susceptible of being readily elevated and moved upon a floor without the necessity of lifting it. I
It is highly desirable in many articles of furniture that they be so mounted as not to against them and therefore it is important that such articles be provided with legs which ordinarily rest upon the floor after they are located in, ositlon for use and consequently, casters t rat rest constantly upon. the floor in connection with the legs of the articles of furniture are unsatisfactory for the reason that they ermit of the article being readily shifted. %y my improvement the article of furniture supplied with it may or dinarily rest steadily and not be readily shiftable when in use but when the article of furniture is to be moved upon the floor, such movement may be readily accomplished by throwing the caster forming a part of the improvement from a position of non-serviceability to a position of servic'eability, whereby the body ofthe furniture leg which previously rested upon the floor is elevated from the floor to remain elevated during the period that the caster is in service.
Figure I is a vertical section taken through II is a rear-elevation of the leg and caster. Fig. III is a similar view to Fig, I with the leg shown in elevated position and illustrating a pending guide stem 4 in order that it me lever to the guide stem.
modified form of caster roller.
In the accompanying drawings: 1 desigl nates the leg of a plece of furniture, such as a erably near its lower end, with a horizontally disposed bearing member 2 containing a vertical perforation 3. At the u er and of the leg is a vertical depending l'stem 4. f
5 designates a caster sleeve or hollow stem I slidably fitted in the aperture of the bearing 50 member 2 and loosely surrounding the d: moved vertically relative to the leg 1. his caster sleeve is provided with a v'erticalslot 6. 7 is a carrier having a shank that is 5 loosely seated in the'low'er end of-the'sleeve 5 to which it is pivotall connected by a pin that passes vertically t ough the carrier and is seated in the sleeve as seen in Fig. I. 9 in a caster roller mounted in the carrier 7.
10 designates a cam lever mounted in the. vertical slot of the sleeve 5 and pivotally con-- nected thereto by a pivot in 11 that passes horizontally through the s eeve and lever at a point beneath the guide stem 4., The cam "is lever is provided at its rear'edge with a seat 12, preferably concaved, which is ads tedto impinge against the lower end of the. epending guide stem 4 when the cam lever is moved to ca said rear edge ofthe cam be of the wheel and II or of the III, and the f The caster roller 9 ma type illustrated in Figs. ball type illustrated in Fig.
- carrier 7 in which the-roller is mounted may be of a construction that is suitable for either type of roller. When, in-the practical'use of my combined furniture le and caster, the leg is at rest upon afloor as i] ustrated inFigs.
I and II, the various parts of the caster are in the elevated positions seen in the res mentioned so that the caster roller wil rest idly upon the floor and out of service. To put the caster into position for service as asupport for the leg and the article of furniture, the handle of the cam lever 10 is grasped and moved downwardly from the position seen in Figs. I and II to the osition seen in Fig. III, whereby the earn 0 the cam lever by bearing against the lower end of the depending guide stem 4 above it is caused to. exert a lifting action upon said deplelnding c the guide stem within the sleeve 5 w roller of the caster is resting firmly upon the floor which offers resistance to the down- 108 ward movement of said roller and necessitates upward movement of the depending guide stem within the sleeve 5 and the article of furniture with the result of elevatin the V leg that is a companion to the caster Item 110 the floor as will be readily undei'stood; the cam lever is moved the seat .12 at its'r'esr' caster from movement relative to the edge iscarried to the lower end of the depending guide stem 4 and,- due to the impingement of the depending guide stem against said seat, the cam lever is held from movement with the result of lockin the eg 1, whereby the leg is caused to be sustained by the caster until the cam lever is again moved and its seat portion is moved away.
from the depending gtyjde stem, and the caster is thrown out of operation while the leg of the piece offurniture with which the caster I itis obvious that theleg may is associated is lowered to the floor as before. While I have shown the leg with which my caster isassociated as one having the form common to those used for supports of stoves, e of any other desired form or shape suitable for use with i any article of furniture other than the stove,
The combination of a leg havin a depend- 111g guide stem and a horizontal y disposed bearing member formed with a vertical perforation beneath the dependin guide stem, a slidable .caster sleeve forme tical slot and receiving the dependin guide stem and extending the vertical perforation, a pivot pin extending through the caster sleeve across the vertical slot, and a cam lever having a cam mounted on the pivot p'inwithin the vertical slot beneath the dependin guide pin.
