To all whom it 'may concern:

Be it known that I, EDMUND C. LEMER- AND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monroe, in the county ot Monroe and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Portable Hitching- Pests, of which Ythe following is a specification.

This invention is an improved portable hitching post which is adapted to be readily secured to the ground and removed therefrom and which when in use is so 'firmly anchored that a horse attached to the post can not dislodge the post, and the said invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement elE devices hereinafter described and claimed.

In the construction of my improved portable hitching post, l provide a tubular body 1, to the upper end of which is secured ahead 2, which head has a transverse opening through which a handle 3 extends, said handle being greater in length than said head so that the ends of the handle project beyond the ends of the head and are adapted to be grasped 'for the purpose ot enabling the hitching post to be secured to the ground or removed therefrom. The lower end of said tubular body is exteriorly screw threaded, as at 4, to enable a bit 5 to be secured thereto, the said bit constituting a screw 6 to enter and become embedded in the ground and an interiorly threaded socket 7 which may be screwed or unscrewed from the lower end o' the tubular body 1. Said tubular body is 'further provided at its upper end on opposite sides with vertical slots 8 ot suitable length. A clip or bail, 9, is pivotally connected to the center' of the head 2, as at 10, and serves -for the attachment of the hitching stra or chain.

It wi be understood that by turning the device in one direction by means of the handles 3 the screw bit may be caused to enter the ground to any desired depth to secure the hitching post thereto.

lVithin the tubular body 1 is a longitudinally movable member 11 provided at its u per end with a head 12 through which extends a handle bar 13. Said head and hence also said handle bar extends through and operates in the slots 8. To the lower end of said longitudinally movable member 11 are attached the upper ends of a pair ol' curved anchoring bits 14 which are preferably made of spring bar steel but may be made of any other suitable resilient material and the said anchoring bits extend through openings 15 near the lower end of the tubular body 1 and on opposite sides of said body and immediately above the socket piece 7 of the screw uit.

In operation, prior to screwing the screw bit into the ground, the member 11 must be moved upwardly so as to retract the anchoring bits 141. After having screwed the screw bit in the ground a su'i'licient depth, the person using the hitching post then by means of the handle bar 13 forces the member 11 downwardly, causing the anchoring bits 14 which bear on the upper side oi' the socket piece 7 to be forced outwardly and downwardly into the soil, as clearly indicated in Fig. 1, so as to firmly anchor the post in the ground and coact with the screw bit in preventing the hitching post from being pulled up by the animal. ln order to release the hitching post, it is only necessary to rst move the member 11 upwardly so as to retract the anchoring bits, and to then unscrew the screw bit from the soil.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A ortable hitching post comprising a tutubulin' body having openings near its lower end, slots near its upper end, a bit at its lower end to enter the ground and a head at its upper end to enable said tubular body to be turned, in combination with a member movable longitudinally in said tubular body having a handle in its upper end operating in the slots of said tubular body, said longitudinally movable member being further Erovided at its lower end with anchoring nftestimony whereof I ailix my signature= its, said bits extending through the openin presence of two witnesses.
