JONATHAN JOHNSON, OF LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 91,541, dated June 22, 1869.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the lame.
To all whom it fina/y concern Bc it known that' I, JONATHAN JOHNSON, of Lowell, in the county of Middlesex, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements for Preventing Oontraction in Horses Feet,`o` which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompany- Ving drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan or bottom view ofthe pad, sheet I.
Figure 2`is a front elevation, sheet 1.
Figure 3 is a rear elevation, sheet 1.
Figure 4 ,is aside elevation of my invention applied, sheet 1.
Figure 5 is the absorbent packing applied, sheet 2.
A spring, B pad, C strap, sheet 1. v
D absorbent packing, sheet 2.
My invention consists in providing an outside adjusting spring, A, extending from the heel to the toe of a-horses foot, with a leather or other strap, C, connected with the spring at the heel and toe, for the purpose of holding the` pad B, supporting the absorbent packing D, covering the frog, and filling the space within and above the shoe. The packing beingwet, softens the hoof, pressure widens the frog and forces the heel outward, affording the required space for motion of the vanicular joint and confn-bone.
The advantages this invention has over other methods 'of stopping (so-called) the foot are: The easy manner in which it is applied and removed, the general use of-water, a natural restorative, and its positive action of pressure upon the frog, the spring so formed as to be readily adj usted to the form ofthe hoof.
In the use of my sandal-pad, persons acquainted with the Lformation, action, and nature of a horses foot, will readily understand its application and use.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The spring A, constructed, applied, and arranged in the manner and for the purpose shown and described.
2. The sandal-pad B, constructed, applied, and arranged in the manner and for the purpose described.
3. The combination of the strap C, spring A, pad B, and absorbent D, all constructed, combined, and arranged as and for the purpose described.
JONATHAN JOHNSON.
