embodying my invention.
UNITED PATENT orFioE.
RUDOLPH A. MILLER, OF CONNERSVILLE, INDIANA, ASSIG'NOR OF ONE-THIRD T0 CHARLES LEWIS, ONE-THIRD TO JAMES J. HEEKIN, AND ONE-THIRD TO ALBERT E. HEEKIN,
'ALL OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
MULTIPLE SIGN.
Patented May 18, 1909.
Application filed June 24, 1908'. Serial No. 440,129.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUDoLrH A. MILLER, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Connersville, county of Fayette, State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Multiple Signs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to signs which consist of a back and of transverse members, in which the back receives the numerals or letters to be read from directly in front of the signs, and the transverse members receive the numerals or letters to be read from positions to one side or the other of the signs and which are known as triple signs, and especially tions, such as bulletin signs, which are used adjacent to railroad tracks.
The object of my invention is a sign of the character indicated, which may be put together readily and may be taken apart for repainting, and which likewise is constructed in a manner such that the back does not permit the rays of light to penetrate it, and which is likewise protected against the entrance of rain, between the joints thereof. This object is attained by the means described in the specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure l is a perspective view of a sign Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the members which form the back of the sign. Fig. 3 is a similar view of a part of one of the transverse members of the sign. Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken upon line :rm of Fig. 1. Flg.
5 is a sectional view taken upon line e'v of Fig. 1.
Referring to the parts: the back is made up of strips of metal, A, having along one edge a flange, a, which is bent at right angles to the strip, A, and along the opposite edge a flange, a, with a return bend, a The transverse members of the sign are made up of straight flat slats, B, of metal of a length equal to the members, A. The frame, C, of the sign has in its top and bottom members, a, 0, a series of transverse slots, which extend from the rear of the members a, 0,
to triple signs of large proporforward, and terminate at a distance from the front edge of the strips. In the rear the members, 0, c, of the frame have a longitudinal rabbet, c". 0 cut in them of a depth equal to the depth of the flange a.
In the completed sign, the flange, a, of one back strip fits into the U-bend, a of the adjacent back strip, and the slats, B, fit into the spaces between the flanges, a, and the flanges, a. The upper and lower edges of the slats, B, are seated in transverse slots in the members, c, c, and the flanges, a, and a, stand withinvthe rabbetgrooves in the rear of the frame. Strips, D, D, are then secured upon the back of the frame, C, sothat their inner edges abut against the U-bends, (1 When the sign is thus assembled, the U-bends hold the transverse members and the back members firmly together, and prevent the passage of rays of light, or of rain through the back of the sign. Should it be desired to dismember the sign for any purpose, such that of re-painting, this is readily accomplished by first removing the strips, D, D, from the frame, after which the back members, A, may be lifted out of contact with the slats, without the employment of force, and then the slats, B, may be pushed out of their slots.
What I claim is:
1. In a multiple sign the combination of a series of strips with parallel flanges bent transversely from their opposite edges, and placed side by side with the flanges in the rear, transverse strips or slats placed between the transverse flanges, and a means for clamping the flanges and the strips together.
2. In a multiple sign the combination of a series of strips, each strip having along its opposite edges transverse flanges one of which flanges has a return bend made in it, the strips being placed together with the straight flange of one strip projecting into the U-bend of the adjacent strip, and transverse slats seated in the ways formed be tween the adjacent flanges.
3. In a multiple sign the combination of a frame having a series of transverse slots in its top and bottom members, transverse" strips seated in the slots, members for forming the back, each metal having along 5 flange and along the U-bend, the strips consisting of a strip of one ed e a transverse other e ge a transverse being placed with the flanges contacting the rear of the transverse strips and the U-bends fitting over and clamping the flanges and the transverse
