Description
__!__. MOLDED PLASTIC CONTAINER
This invention relates to a molded plastic container and more particularly relates to an improved molded plastic, drum-type container of the type used primarily for the storage and shipment of liquid chemical compounds.
Containers have been described in a number of US patents, particularly the following US patent nos: 3,050,773; 3,949,877; 4,032,031; 4,170,623; 4,228,122; 4,228,911; 4,257,527; 4,282,974; 4,378,328; 4,529,570; 4,898,296; 4,925,049; 5,018,642; 5,033,639; 5,044,510; and 5,114,659. None of the above patents discloses a container of the type described and claimed herein.
It is a primary object of the invention to provide an improved configuration and structural arrangement for a molded plastic, drum-type container of the type used for the storage and shipment of liquid chemical compounds.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a container which has increased compression strength to allow the container to be stacked with other such containers vertically higher than has been possible in the past.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide a container with stronger solid end handling rings and intermediate rolling hoops that serve to increase the side wall strength and also facilitate the handling of the container by modern methods.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a container end wall arrangement with improved drainage to minimize the possibility of seepage of standing water into a closure.
According to the present invention there is provided a molded plastic drum-type container of the type used for the storage and transportation of liquid and chemical compounds, comprising: a hollow blow molded body including a generally cylindrical side wall
and a pair of integral, round, top and bottom end walls; said side wall being joined to outer edges of said top and bottom end walls and having upper and lower end portions extending above and below said top and bottom end walls; solid compression molded upper and lower handling rings formed integrally with and projecting radially outward from upper and lower edges of said upper and lower portions of said side wall; and a plurality of solid compression molded rolling hoops formed integrally with and projecting radially outward from said side wall; wherein said top end wall has a relatively flat annular outer peripheral portion, and a pair of necked openings.
Preferably said rolling hoops are arranged spaced from each other above and below a central area of said side wall. More preferably, said rolling hoops are arranged in two pairs spaced from each other.
In a preferred construction said end and side walls have certain adjacent portions molded to extend axially and radially inward, respectively, to form openings disposed entirely axially inward of said end walls for draining liquid from an upwardly facing surface of a related end wall.
Preferably the top end wall includes a raised center portion, which is desirably generally I-shaped. Preferably also, the raised center portion is generally co-planar with an upper surface of said upper handling ring.
The rolling hoops may be generally rectangular in cross-section, and may present outer vertical surfaces that are concave.
In a preferred embodiment said side wall has an outer surface that is generally cylindrical throughout the majority of its height and has areas located immediately axially inwardly adjacent said end walls that are slightly concave.
Reference is now made to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary isometric view of a container according to the present invention;
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the structure illustrated in Figure 1;
Figures 3 and 4 are top and bottom plan views, respectively, of the structure illustrated in Figure 1;
Figures 5 and 6 are vertical sectional views taken along lines 5-5 and 6-6, respectively, of Figure 3;
Figure 7 is an enlarged isometric view of a portion of the structure illustrated in Figure 1; and
Figure 8 is a vertical sectional view taken along line 8-8 of Figure 7. In the drawings there is shown a molded plastic drum-type container generally designated 10.
As best seen in Figures 5 and 6, the container 10 includes a side wall 20 and a pair of integral top and bottom end walls 30 and 40 respectively. Major portions of the container side and end walls 20, 30 and 40 are formed by a blow molding process; however, certain portions of the container 10, such as handling rings and rolling hoops (both of which are described in further detail below) , are formed and secured to the body of the container 10 by a process including both blow molding and compression molding.
Side wall 20 is generally cylindrical throughout the majority of its length, as indicated at 20a, but may have upper and lower portions 20b that are slightly concave.
The side wall 20 of the container 10 is provided with two pairs of integral rolling hoops 22 spaced .. vertically from each other above and below the center of the container side wall 20 (this is best seen in Figures 5 and 6) .
Each of the rolling hoops 22 is solid, rather than hollow, and is formed and welded to the container, at the same time the body is blow molded, by a compression molding process of the type disclosed in US Patent No. 4,713,207.
The contour of each rolling hoop 22 is preferably generally rectangular, as shown in the drawings, although, in certain instances, it has been found that it may be advantageous to provide rolling hoops with concave outer surfaces (not shown) .
Referring to Figures 5 to 7, it will be seen that the side wall 20 has, at its upper extremity, an extended portion 24 that projects axially upwardly beyond the top end wall 20. At its upper extremity the extended portion 24 has formed integrally therewith a solid, radially outwardly projecting, handling ring 26, which, like the rolling hoops 22, may be formed and joined to the side wall body by a combination of blow molding and compression molding processes.
As best seen in Figures 3, 5 and 6, the top end wall 30 has a relatively flat outer portion 32 and a generally I-shaped raised center portion 34 that is approximately in vertical alignment with the upper extremity of the side wall 20.
Extending through the flat outer portion of the top end wall 30 on opposite sides of raised center portion 34 are a pair of filling/dispensing/venting openings 35, each of which is surrounded by an upwardly projecting neck 36 adapted to receive a closure (not shown) .
The upper end of the container 10 is provided with a unique drain hole arrangement that prevents water from collecting on the top end wall 30 where it could conceivably seep into one of the closures.
As best seen in Figure 8, in certain locations, adjacent areas of top end wall 30 and side wall 20 are molded to extend axially and radially inwardly, as shown at 38, to provide openings 39 that serve as drain holes. The drain hole openings 39 are located entirely below the lowest outer portion of the upper surface of the top end wall 30 to prevent liquids, such as rainwater, from collecting on the upper end of the container.
The structure of the bottom end wall 40 is similar to that of the top end wall 30, except for the filling/ dispensing/venting opening 35 and the raised center portion 32.
The bottom wall 40 is relatively flat and is joined to the lower end of the side wall 20, as shown at 47. Also, the side wall 20 has a lower portion 44 projecting downwardly beyond the bottom wall 40. At its lower extremity, side wall 20 has an integral, solid, outwardly projecting handling ring 46 that is similar in construction and operation to the upper handling ring 26.
The bottom end wall 40 and side wall 20 have adjacent areas molded to extend axially and radially inward, as shown at 48, to form drain hole openings 49, so that liquid can drain off the container if it is placed upside down, in the same way that it can drain from the top wall 30.
