Description
A device for fixing a nasal tube in a person's one nostril
The invention concerns a device for fixing a nasal tube in a person's one nostril, said device having an upper part which is attached by adhesion to the bridge of the person's nose and a lower part for attachment to the nasal tube, said upper and lower parts being connected by means of an intermediate member.
Such devices are used for fixing a nasal tube in a person's right or left nostril to prevent the tube from changing its position or from unintentionally slipping out of the nostril. Such persons are frequently patients under intensive care. Oxygen may be supplied through the nasal tube to enrich the aspiration air, and in this case the end of such an oxygen catheter is positioned in the patient's nose, or the end of the tube may be positioned in the patient's stomach for artificial feeding or for taking samples of the contents of the stomach. Finally, the tube may be an electrode whose end is positioned in the oesophagus at the same height as the heart for measuring ECG or even for electric stimulation of the heart. Below, the term nasal tube comprises all such embodiments for the said and other uses.
In such patients the nasal tube is often in the same position for an extended period of time, typically several days, and it is therefore of great importance to the comfort of the patient that the nasal tube c:^3 not e.g. exert a pressure for an extended period of t-_.me, which gives rise to discomfort.
Known devices for fixing a nasal tube generally have a high degree of symmetry about a vertical central axis, and this means that the tube is fixed tightly engaged with the
septum between the patient's two nostrils and hereby exerts a pressure which can give rise to discomfort when applied for an extended period of time.
US 3 046 989 shows a device of the present type whose ' intermediate member is arranged asymmetrically with respect to the vertical central axis of the upper part. With such a device a nasal tube can be positioned central¬ ly in a person's one nostril, but the device cannot selectively be used for right or left nostrils, and two versions of the device are therefore necessary, viz. one version for right nostrils and one version for left nostrils. This adds to the costs of production, storage and distribution and involves the risk of confusion - not least in the situation of use.
It is an object of the invention to provide a device for fixing a nasal tube, where one and the same device can selectively be used for fixing a nasal tube in right as well as left nostrils. This object is achieved by a device as defined in the patent claim. The device is hereby sym¬ metrical about a horizontal axis of symmetry and asymme¬ trical with respect to its vertical central axis, and in particular the upper and lower parts of the device are symmetrical, and by turning the device half a revolution so that the upper part and the lower part change position, and the intermediate member is moved from the left to the right, or vice versa, one and the same device may advan¬ tageously be used for fixing a nasal tube in the left as well as the right nostril, as mentioned above.
The invention will be described more fully below with reference to the drawing, in which
fig. 1 shows a preferred embodiment of the invention,
fig. 2 shows an alternative embodiment of the invention, and
fig. 3 shows the use of a device of fig. 1.
Figs. 1 and 2 show devices 10 and 20, respectively, which consist of a flat, flexible base material having an ad¬ hesive layer of an ordinary medical grade on one side. The base material may be woven or non-woven or another known material which is useful for the purpose. The device 10 in fig. 1 has an upper part 11 and a lower part 12, which are approximately semi-circular in this case. The upper part 11 and the lower part 12 are spaced from each other and are interconnected via an intermediate member 13. Corre- spondingly, the device in fig. 2 has an upper part 21, a lower part 22 and an intermediate member 23 connecting the upper and lower parts. The upper part 21 and the lower part 22 in fig. 2 have a rectangular shape here. Other shapes than those shown in figs. 1 and 2 may be used, and e.g. the corners of the upper part and of the lower part may be cut obliquely, as indicated by the dashed lines in fig. 2.
A vertical central axis 24 of the device 20 is marked in fig. 2, and the intermediate member 23 is arranged asym¬ metrically with respect to the vertical central axis 24. No vertical central axis is marked in fig. 1, but it will be seen that also the intermediate member 13 is arranged asymmetrically about such a vertical central axis. The importance of this will appear from the description below in connection with fig. 3.
Both the device 10 in fig. 1 and the device 20 in fig. 2 are symmetrical about a horizontal axis of symmetry. Such an axis of symmetry 25 is marked in fig. 2, and the im¬ portance of this will also appear from the description
below in connection with fig. 3.
The device 10, 20 is supplied in the shape shown in fig. 1 and fig. 2, respectively, and has on its adhesive face a protective layer of a known type which is removed prior to use. Fig. 3 shows a device 10 of the invention where the upper part 11 of the device is adhered to the bridge of the nose 31 of a person, and a nasal tube 30 is inserted into the person's right nostril 32. The intermediate mem- ber 13 of the device extends down below the nostril 32, and its lower part 12 is shown positioned around the nostril 30 which it surrounds with its adhesive face, so that the lower part 12 is attached by adhesion to the nasal tube 30. It will be seen that owing the asymmetrical arrangement of the intermediate member 13 with respect to the upper part 11, the nasal tube 30 may be fixed centrally in the nostril 32 without causing any discomfort when engaging the internal septum (not shown) of the nose.
Since the device 10, 20 of the invention is moreover sym¬ metrical about a horizontal axis of symmetry, the device of the invention may be used for fixing a nasal tube in the left nostril 32' in the same manner as in fig. 3. For this purpose the device is rotated 180° in its own plane, so that the upper part 11 and its lower part 12 change position, and in particular the intermediate member 13 will change side from the right to the left. The part of the device which is now uppermost, is adhered to the bridge 31 of the person's nose, and the intermediate mem- ber 13 is now aligned with the person's left nostril 32', and the part of the device which is now lowermost, is adhered to the nasal tube which is hereby fixed in the left nostril 32' .
