Abstract

A configuration management system (10) and method manage configuration settings and representations thereof for computers (14) in a network (12), with computers (14) grouped according to common setting values. The configuration settings are stored in a configuration database (20), which is compared to the configuration settings of each computer during operation of the network (12). Computer configurations as Already-Have lists are scanned and common settings are extracted to generate Should-Have lists, which may in turn be scanned for common settings among groups to generate sublists and sub-sublists. As discrepancies and conflicts in settings are detected, the configuration setting system and method compares Should-Have lists, determines differences, and displays such differences to a user such as an administrator.
