明 細 書 反強誘電性液晶表示ディ スプレイ及びその駆動方法 技術分野
本発明は、 反強誘電性液晶を液晶層とするマ ト リ ッ クス状の画素 を有する液晶表示パネルや液晶光シ ャ ッ ターアレイ等と、 複数の色 を発光することが可能な光源とを組み合わせた、 反強誘電性液晶表 示ディ スプレイ及びその駆動方法に関する。 背景技術
液晶セルをシャ ッ ターと して用い、 その背後に発光素子 (例えば
L E D, C R T等) を設置して継時加法混合現象を用いてカラー表 示を実現する方法が発表されている。 例えば Eur odi splay' 84におい て発表された Phlip Bos, Thomas Buzak Rolf Vatneらの 7- 9 " 4A Ful卜 Color Field-Sequential Color Display " (1984/9/18-20) 等が先行技術文献と して上げられる。 この表示方法はカラーフ ィ ル タ一のように、 表示画素に各色のセグメ ン 卜を分散して設けたもの とは異なり、 短時間に各色の照射を行う ことによってカラー表示を 行う ものである。 この方法に用いる液晶セルはモノ ク 口表示に用い るセルと同じ構成でよい。 液晶セルの背後の発光素子 'が、 例えば R
(赤) 、 G (緑) 、 B (青) の 3原色の光を発光し、 そ ήぞれある 一定時間 (T S ) 液晶セルに順次これらの光を照射する。 .即ち、 R
(赤) 、 G (緑) 、 Β (青) の順に、 それぞれの色の光を時間 T S づっ液晶セルに照射する。 そして、 これら 3原色の照射を繰り返す 。 液晶セルはこの時間 T Sに同期して各表示画素の光透過率を変化 させる。 即ち、 表示される色の情報に応じて、 R, G, Bの各光の 透過率を液晶セルを駆動して決める。 例えば、 Rが時間 T S発光し ている間は液晶セルの光透過率を 5 0 %とと し、 Gが時間 T S発光 している間は液晶セルの光透過率を 7 0 %とと し、 Bが時間 T S発 光している間は液晶セルの光透過率を 9 0 %ととする。 通常時間 T Sは非常に短いため、 それぞれの色は一つずつの色とは認識されず 、 それぞれの色の混色と して人間には認識される。
このよ うな方法を強誘電性液晶表示素子に応用と した技術が、 特 開昭 6 3 — 8 5 5 2 3号公報、 特開昭 6 3 — 8 5 5 2 4号公報、 特 開昭 6 3 — 8 5 5 2 5号公報に開示されている。 しかし、 このよう な方法を反強誘電性液晶表示素子に応用 した具体的な駆動方法につ いて開示した文献は見い出されていない。
反強誘電性液晶は充分な電界を印加すると強誘電性を示すが、 外 部からの電界等の影響がない状態では、 強誘電性液晶と比較してそ の特性が大き く異なる。 従って、 反強誘電性液晶表示素子を駆動す る場合、 その特性を生かした駆動方法が必要となる。 反強誘電性 液晶を用いた液晶表示素子は日本電装 (株) 及び昭和シ ル石油 ( 株) の特開平 2 — 1 7 3 7 2 4号公報で、 広視野角を有すること、 高速応答が可能なこと、 マルチプレッ クス特性が良好なこと等が報 告されて以来、 多く の研究がなされている。 発明の開示
前述した継時加法混合現象を用いたカラー表示をするために反強 誘電性液晶を駆動する場合、 液晶シ ャ ッ ターの背後に光源と して配 置された発光素子が一つの色を発光している時間を前述のように T S とする。 発光素子が R、 G、 Bを順次発光した場合、 発光素子か ら発せられる光の色の変化がちらつきとなって人間の目に認識され ないようにするためには、 前記時間 T Sを約 2 0 m s より も短くす る必要力 ある。
また、 従来の反強誘電液晶の駆動方法によると、 どの走査線上に その画素が位置するかによって、 上記時間 T Sに透過する光量が異 なってく る。 例えば、 液晶表示画面全体を白表示と した場合を考え てみる。 この場合表示される色は白であるから、 R、 G、 Bの透過 率がすべての画素で 1 0 0 %ととなるよう液晶を駆動する。 例えば Rが発光している時間 T Sに、 各走査電極にそれぞれ駆動電圧が印 加される。 なお、 次の時間 T Sには Gが発光し、 その次の時間 T S には Bが発光し、 それぞれの時間 T Sに液晶が駆動され、 所望の色 (この場合は白色) が表示される。 しかし、 走査電極に後述の選択 電圧が印加されるタイ ミ ングが少しづつずれてゆく ため、 Rが発光 している時間 T Sに、 走査電極 X I 、 X 2 、 --- X nに対応する画 素が Rの光を透過する時間は少しづつ短く なつてゆき、 最後の走査 電極上の画素においてはわずかな期間しか Rの光を透過しない。 走 査電極の位置によって画素が光を透過する時間、 即ち、 透過光量が 異なると、 画面全体を均一な輝度で表示できず、 また色を制御でき ないため所望の色を表示できなく なる。 例えば、 最後の走査電極の 画素は Rの光をわずかの時間しか透過しないので、 Rの光量が少な く なり表示される色は白でなく別の色となってしま う。
本発明は上記問題点を解決し、 ディ スプレイ全体を均一な輝度で 表示でき、 かつ所望の色表示ができる、 継時加法混合現象を用いた 反強誘電性液晶ディ スプレイ及びその駆動方法を提供するものであ る
本発明反強誘電性液晶ディ スプレイは、 対向面にそれぞれ複数の 走査電極と信号電極を有する一対の基板間に反強誘電性液晶を挟持 した反強誘電性液晶表示素子と、 互いに異なる複数の色の光を継時 的に発光する光源を具備し、 光源の 1 つの色の光が発光する間 (T S ) の走査期間を 2つの期間に分け、 第 1 の期間 ( S C 1 ) は表示 状態を決める選択期間と該選択期間で選択した表示状態を保持する 非選択期間を有し、 残りの期間である第 2の期間 ( S C 2 ) は表示 状態を黒表示とする選択期間と該選択期間で選択した黒表示状態を 保持する非選択期間を有している。
また、 本発明反強誘電性液晶ディ スプレイは、 対向面に N本の走 査電極と M本の信号電極を有する一対の基板間に反強誘電性液晶を 挟持した反強誘電性液晶表示素子と互いに異なる複数の色の光を継 時的に発光する光源を具備し、 光源の 1 つの色の光が発光する間 ( T S ) に偶数の走査期間を有し、 該走査期間のうち奇数番目の走査 期間においては走査電極を 1 本目から N本目の方向に走査する正方 向走査を行い、 偶数番目の走査期間においては走査電極を N本目か ら 1本目の方向に走査する逆方向走査を行っている。 また、 その逆 の走査を行つている。
さ らに、 本発明反強誘電性液晶ディ スプレイは、 光源の 1 つの色 の光が発光する間 (T S ) に走査電極を 1 本目から N本目の方向に 走査する正方向走査を行い、 次に同じ色の光が発光する間 (T S ) に走査電極を N本目から 1 本目の方向に走査する逆方向走査を行い 、 前記正方向走査と逆方向走査を交互に繰り返すようにしている。 発明の効果
本発明の反強誘電性液晶ディ スプレイ及びその駆動方法によれば 、 表示画面全体が輝度ムラのない均一な表示を行う ことが出来る。 また、 色の制御が正確にできるので所望の色を表示することができ

図 1 は反強誘電性液晶を液晶表示素子と して用いる場合の偏光板 の配置を示す図である。 ク ロスニコルに合わせた偏光板 1 a、 l b の間に、 偏光板 1 aの偏光軸 a と偏光板 1 bの偏光軸 bのどちらか と電圧無印加時に於ける平均的な分子の長軸方向 Xがほぼ平行にな るように液晶セル 2 を置く。 そして、 電圧無印加時に黒が、 電界印 加時には白が表示できるように液晶セルを設定する。
このような液晶セルに電圧を印加したとき、 それに対する透過率 変化をプロッ 卜 してグラフにすると図 2のようなループを描く。 電 圧を印加し増加させたとき光透過率が変化し始める電圧値を V 1 、 光透過率の変化が飽和する電圧値を V 2、 逆に電圧値を減少させた とき光透過率が減少し始める電圧値を V 5、 また逆極性の電圧を印 加し、 その絶対値を増加させたときに光透過率が変化し始める電圧 値を V 3、 光透過率変化が飽和する電圧値を V 4、 逆に電圧の絶対 値を減少させたとき光透過率が変化し始める電圧値を V 6 とする。 図 2 に示されているように、 前記印加された電圧値が反強誘電性液 晶分子の閾値以上である場合に第 1 の強誘電性状態が選択される。 また、 反強誘電性液晶分子の閾値以上である逆極性の電圧が印加さ れた場合は、 第 2の強誘電性状態が選択される。 これらの強誘電性 状態において、 電圧値がある閾値より低く なった場合には反強誘電 性状態が選択される。 反強誘電性液晶ディ スプレイは、 反強誘電性 状態で黒表示とすることも白表示とすることもできる。 本発明では そのいずれにも対応できる。 しかし、 以下このディ スプレイは反強 誘電性状態で黒表示するものと して説明する。
次に、 反強誘電性液晶を用いた一般的な液晶の駆動方法について 説明する。 図 3 は走査電極と信号電極を基盤上にマ ト リ ッ クス状に 配置した液晶パネルの電極構成の例を示す図である。 この電極構成 は走査電極 (X 1 、 X 2、 X 3 , --X η , --X80) および信号電極 (Y l、 Υ 2、 Υ 3, - -Ym, --Y 220 ) を有し、 走査電極と信号 電極が交差する斜線部分が画素 (All、 Anm) である。 これら画素 に対応して走査電極へ 1 ライ ンずつ電圧が印加され、 これに同期し て信号電極から表示状態に応じた電圧波形が印加される。 そして、 信号電極と走査電極の電圧波形の合成波形に応じて表示が書き込ま れる。
図 4に示すように、 走査電極 (X n) に走査電圧 ( a ) を、 信号 電極 (Ym) に信号電圧 (b ) を印加し、 その合成電圧 ( c ) を画 素 (A n m) に印加することにより画素への書き込みが行われる。 図 4において、 選択期間 ( S e ) で第 1、 も しく は第 2の強誘電性 状態、 も しく は反強誘電性状態が選択され、 その状態が次の非選択 期間 (N S e ) で保持される。 即ち、 選択期間 (S e ) で選択パル スが印加され、 その結果得た透過光量 (透過率) ( d ) をその後の 非選択期間 (N S e ) で保持させることにより表示を行っている。 反強誘電性液晶表示素子においては、 画素に書き込みを行う直前 に反強誘電性液晶を第 1、 又は第 2の強誘電性状態、 も しく は反強 誘電性状態にリセッ 卜することが一般に行われる。 例えば図 4では 、 選択期間 ( S e ) の直前にリセッ ト期間 (R e ) が設けられる。 この期間内では画素に閾値電圧以下の電圧が印加され、 反強誘電性 液晶は反強誘電性状態にリセッ 卜される。 このように画素に必要な 情報を書き込む直前に各画素の状態をリセッ 卜することにより、 以 前の書き込み時の状態の影響を受けず、 良好な表示を行う ことが出 来る。 図 4において、 F l、 F 2、 F 3、 F 4はそれぞれ第 1、 第 2、 第 3、 第 4 フ レームを表す。 そして、 第 1、 第 2 フ レームでは 白表示され、 第 3、 第 4 フ レームでは黒表示される。 図に示されて いるように、 通常はフ レーム毎に極性が反転される。
前述した継時加法混合現象を用いたカラー表示をするため液晶を 駆動する場合、 液晶シャ ッ ターの背後に光源と して配置された発光 素子が一つの色を発光している時間を前述のように T Sとする。 そ して、 時間 T Sを約 2 O m sより短く すれば、 発光素子が R、 G、 Bを順次発光した場合、 発光素子から発せられる光の色の変化がち らつきとなって人間の目に認識されない。
従来の反強誘電性液晶の駆動方法により上記継時加法混合現象を 用いてカラ一表示するため液晶を駆動すると、 先に述べたようにど の走査線にその画素が位置するかによって、 上記時間 T Sに透過す る光量が異なってく る。 例えば、 液晶表示画面全体を白表示と した 場合を考えてみる。 この場合表示される色は白であるから、 R、 G 、 Bの透過率がすべての画素で 1 0 0 %ととなるよう液晶を駆動す る。 図 5 は、 例えば Rが発光している時間 T Sに、 各走査電極に印 加される電圧波形を示した図である。 なお、 次の T Sには Gが発光 し、 その次の T Sには Bが発光し、 それぞれの期間 T Sに液晶が駆 動され、 所望の色 (この場合は白色) が表示される。 図 5に示され た波形は、 図 4の期間 F 1 に走査電極に印加される駆動波形と同じ である。 (XI ) 、 (X2 ) 、 --- (X80) はそれぞれ走査電極 X 1 、 X2 、 --- X80に印加される電圧波形であり、 (Tl ) 、 (T 2 ) 、 - - - (T80) はそれぞれ走査電極 XI 、 X2 、 --- X80に対 応する画素の光透過率の変化を示した波形である。 図 5からわかる ように、 Rが発光されている時間 T Sに、 走査電極 X I 、 X 2 、 一 - X 80に対応する画素が Rの光を透過する時間は少しづつ短く なつ てゆき、 (T 80) では最後のわずかな期間に光を透過しているだけ である。 このように走査電極の位置によって液晶セルが光を透過す る時間が異なると、 色を制御できず、 所望の色を表示できなく なる 。 例えば、 図 5のような場合、 X 80に対応する画素は Rの光をわず かの時間しか透過しないので透過光量は少なく なり、 画素の輝度は 低く なる。 そのため画面全体を均一な輝度で表示できず、 表示され る色は白でなく別の色となってしま う。
図 6 は縦軸に走査電極の番地、 横軸に白表示の場合の各走査電極 上の画素の光の透過光量 (透過時間) を示したグラフである。 この グラフによると、 走査電極が 1、 2、 3、 -- - 7 9、 8 0 となるに 従い各走査電極上の画素の透過光量は少なく なってゆく ことがわか る。 従って、 図 4 に示す従来の反強誘電液晶の駆動方法によると、 画素に対応する走査電極の位置によつて、 画素の透過光量が異なる ことが分かる。 このように継時加法混合現象を用いた液晶表示素子 において、 従来の駆動方法を用いると、 特に走査電極が多い場合、 走査線毎に透過光量が異なるため、 色を正確に制御することができ なく なり、 またディ スプレイ全体を均一な輝度と した良好な表示を 行う ことが出来なく なる。
本発明は上記問題点を解決し、 ディ スプレイ全体を均一な輝度で 表示し、 かつ所望の色表示ができる、 継時加法混合現象を用いた反 強誘電性液晶ディ スプレイ及びその駆動方法を提供するものである o
〔第 1 の実施の形態〕
以下本発明の実施の形態を図面に基づいて詳細に説明する。 図 7 は本発明の実施の形態に用いた液晶パネル構成を示す図である。 こ の実施例で用いた液晶パネルは約 2 の厚さの反強誘電性液晶層 1 0 を持つ一対のガラス基板 1 1 a、 1 l b と 2枚のガラスを張り合 わせるためのシール材 1 2 a、 1 2 b とから構成されている。 ガラ ス基板の対向面には電極 1 3 a、 1 3 bが形成されており、 その上 に高分子配向膜 1 4 a、 1 4 bが塗布され、 ラビング処理がなされ ている。 さ らに一方のガラス基板の外側に偏光板の偏光軸とラ ビン グ軸とが平行になるように第 1 の偏光板 1 5 aが設置されており、 他方のガラス基板の外側には第 1 の偏光板 1 5 aの偏光軸と 9 0 ° 異なるようにして第 2の偏光板 1 5 bが設けられている。 この液晶 素子の裏側にはバッ クライ ト 1 6 と して 3色 (R, G, B ) を発光 する L E t)が設けられている。 バッ クライ ト 1 6 は R, G , Bの順 序で点灯し、 それぞれの点灯時間は約 1 6 . 7 m sである。
液晶パネルの電極構成は図 3 に示されたものと同じであり、 走査 電極と信号電極は図 3のように配置されている。 X I、 X 2、 X n は走査電極であり、 Y l、 Y 2、 Y mは信号電極である。 それぞれ が交差する斜線部分が画素 (A l l、 A nm) である。 図 3 に示された 電極構成においては、 走査電極は 8 0本、 信号電極は 2 2 0本であ るが、 走査電極と信号電極の本数は任意に変更できる。
図 8 は反強誘電液晶ディ スプレイの駆動回路構成を示すプロ ッ ク 図である。 図の反強誘電液晶ディ スプレイ 2 1 において、 走査信号 が印加される走査電極は走査電極駆動回路 2 2 に接続され、 表示信 号が印加される信号電極は信号電極駆動回路 2 3 に接続される。 走 査電極駆動回路 2 2 には電源回路 2 4から液晶ディ スプレイの走査 電極を駆動するために必要な電圧 V Xが供給され、 信号電極駆動回 路 2 3 には電源回路 2 4から液晶ディ スプレイの信号電極を駆動す るために必要な電圧 V yが供給される。 制御回路 2 5 は表示データ 発生源 2 6からの信号に基づいて走査電極駆動回路 2 2及び信号電 極駆動回路 2 3に信号を供給し、 走査電極駆動回路 2 2及び信号電 極駆動回路 2 3はそれぞれ与えられた信号に基づいて液晶ディ スプ レイ 2 1 に電圧 V x、 V yで構成される信号を供給する。
図 9は本発明の第 1の実施形態を示した図である。 この実施形態 は本発明反強誘電性液晶ディ スプレイが白表示されるとき、 時間 T Sに走査電極 (X n ) 印加される電圧波形 ( a ) 、 信号電極 (Ym ) に印加される電圧波形 ( b ) 、 それらが交差した画素 (A n m) に印加される合成駆動電圧波形 ( c ) 、 およびバッ クライ 卜の透過 光量 (T) の変化 ( d ) を示した図である。 本発明に用いた上記液 晶駆動波形は、 光の三原色の 1つの色、 例えば Rが発光している時 間 T Sの走査期間の波形であり、 この走査期間は 2つの期間から構 成されている。 第 1 の期間 ( S C 1 ) は選択期間と非選択期間から 構成され、 選択期間 ( S e ) が 2位相であり、 残りが非選択期間 ( N S e ) となっている。 また、 第 2の期間 (S C 2 ) も同じく選択 期間 ( S e ) と非選択期間 (N S e ) から構成され、 選択期間 (S e ) が 2位相であり、 残りが非選択期間 (N S e ) となっている。 1位相のパルス幅は約 7 0 sに設定され、 第 1 の期間 ( S C 1 ) において、 走査電極 (X n ) には選択期間 ( S e ) の第 1位相にお いては 0 Vの電圧値が、 第 2位相においては 2 0 Vの電圧値のパル スが印加され、 非選択期間 (N S e ) に 6 Vの保持電圧が印加され る。 また第 2の期間 ( S C 2 ) において、 走査電極 (X n ) には選 択期間 ( S e ) の第 1位相においては 0 Vの電圧値が、 第 2位相に おいては— 1 2 Vの電圧値のパルスが印加され、 非選択期間 (N S e ) に— 6 Vの保持電圧が印加される。 信号電極 (Ym) には ± 4 Vの電圧波形が表示状態に応じて印加される。
上記駆動電圧波形において、 図 9 に示されているように、 第 1 の 期間 (S C I ) の始まりには全ての画素を黒表示とする リセッ ト期 間 (R s ) を設けてもよい。
図 9に示された実施の形態においては、 反強誘電性液晶ディ スプ レイが白表示されるときの駆動電圧波形と透過光量が示されている 。 この場合、 第 1の期間 ( S C 1 ) に合成電圧波形 ( A n m) と し て 2 4 Vの電圧が選択期間 ( S e ) の第 2位相において印加される ため (選択パルス) 、 反強誘電性液晶は第 1 の強誘電性状態となり 、 透過光量 (T) は選択期間 ( S e ) で 1 0 0 %近く に上昇する。 非選択期間 (N S e ) では反強誘電性液晶は強誘電性状態を保持さ れ、 透過率 1 0 0 %が維持されるため白表示される。 第 2の期間 ( S C 2 ) では選択期間 (S e ) に合成電圧波形と して第 1位相にお いて一 4 Vの電圧値が、 そして第 2位相において— 8 Vの電圧値が 印加される。 その結果、 反強誘電性液晶は強誘電性状態から反強誘 電性状態に移行し、 透過光量は 0 %となり、 黒表示となる。 図 9 に 示されているように、 光、 この場合は Rの光であるカ^ 1 0 0 %透 過する期間は第 1の期間 ( S C 1 ) となる。
図 9は 1本の走査電極に印加される電圧波形を示した図であるが 、 図 1 0 は、 本発明反強誘電性液晶ディ スプレイが白表示されると き、 Rが発光している時間 T Sに 1本目、 2本目、 8 0本目の走査 電極 XI 、 X2 、 X80のに印加される電圧波形 (XI ) 、 (X2 ) 、 (X80) 、 及びこれらの走査電極に対応するの画素の透過率の変 化を示した波形 (Tl ) 、 (T2 ) 、 (T80) を示した図である。 図において、 走査電極 XI 、 X2 、 X80に印加される電圧波形は、 図 9の走査電極 X nに印加される電圧波形 ( a ) と同じであり、 走 査電極の数を Nとするとこの電圧波形は 1 づっずれている。 こ れら電圧波形 (XI ) 、 (X2 ) 、 (X80) は図 9 と同じく第 1の 期間 ( S C 1 ) と第 2の期間 ( S C 2 ) に分かれている。 走査電極 X I の電圧波形 (X I ) は第 1 と第 2の期間が時間 T Sのほぼ中間 で分かれている。 しかし、 走査電極 X 2 と X 80の電圧波形 (X 2 ) 、 ( X 80) は中間部に第 1 の期間 S C 1 が位置し、 その前後に第 2 の期間が位置している。 その結果透過率の波形 (T l ) 、 (T 2 ) 、 ( T 80) に示されているように、 時間 T Sにおいて透過率が 1 0 0 %となる位置は異なるが、 各走査電極に対応する画素の透過光量 はすべて同じとなる。 図 1 0では走査電極 X I 、 X 2 、 X 80に対応 する画素の透過率の波形 (T l ) 、 (T 2 ) 、 ( T 80) を示したが 、 他の走査電極に対応する画素の透過率の波形はほぼ同じ形となり 、 従って透過光量もすベて同じとなる。
図 1 0 に示されているように、 本発明による駆動方法によると、 ある色の発光素子が点灯している時間 T S内に反強誘電性液晶が反 強誘電状態 (黒表示) となる期間 ( S C 2 ) を設けている。 そのた め光が透過する第 1 の期間 ( S C 1 ) は、 図 1 0 に示すように走査 線毎に選択期間 S e の間隔づづずれていき、 それと同時に光が透過 しない第 2の期間 (黒表示) も走査線毎に移動していく。 その結果 、 各走査線における画素において光が透過している期間は等しく な る。 図 9では、 リセッ ト期間 R s を設けたが、 リセッ ト期間 R s は 設けても設けなく と もよい。 なお、 図 1 0 に示された走査電圧波形 にはリセッ ト期間 R s は設けられていない。 本発明では反強誘電性 液晶が反強誘電性状態となる第 2の期間を期間 T Sの一部に設けれ ばよいが、 上記第 2の期間を期間 T Sの 1 / 2の長さに設定すると 最も効果的である。
図 1 1 は、 上記本発明の液晶駆動方法を用いた場合、 各走査電極 上の画素の透過光量を示したグラフである。 図 1 1 のグラフにおい て、 縦軸は走査電極の番地であり、 横軸は白表示の場合において時 間 T Sの間に各走査電極上の画素を透過する光量を示している。 背 面の 1 つの色が発光している時間 T Sは 1 6. 7 m s と した。 各走 査電極上の画素が光を透過していた時間は全て約 8. 3 m s となつ た。 そのため、 輝度むらの無い均一な輝度を有した表示画面、 及び 所望の色表示を得ることができた。
〔第 2の実施の形態〕
第 1 の実施の形態においては、 図 4に示された液晶駆動波形と異 なった駆動波形を用いた。 しかし、 図 4に示された従来用いられて いる液晶駆動波形を用いて前記課題を解決することができる。
図 1 2 は図 4の 2 フ レーム分の駆動波形を示した図である。 この 駆動波形は従来から用いられている駆動波形で、 第 1 フ レーム (F 1 ) と第 2 フ レーム (F 2 ) の波形は同じで、 極性が反転されてい る。 図において、 ( a ) は走査電極 (X n) に印加される電圧波形 、 ( b ) は信号電極 (Ym) に印加される電圧波形、 ( c ) は画素 に印加される合成電圧波形である。 そして、 画素に印加される電圧 波形によって、 液晶の光透過率が変化する。 この駆動波形は画面を 白表示する場合の波形である。
本発明の第 2の実施の形態では、 1つの色 (例えば R) が発光し ている間に図 1 2 に示された駆動波形が液晶に印加される。 その際 、 第 1 フ レーム (F 1 ) の走査期間においては、 電圧波形 ( a ) が 第 1本目の走査電極から順に第 N本目の走査電極に 1 /Nづっずれ て印加される。 また、 第 2 フ レーム (F 2 ) においては、 電圧波形 ( a ) が逆に第 N本目の走査電極から順に第 1本目の走査電極に 1 /Nづっずれて印加される。 そのため、 図 6で説明したように、 第 1 フ レーム (F 1 ) においては、 走査電極が 1、 2、 3、 とな るに従い画素の透過光量が少なく なつてゆく。 一方、 第 2 フ レーム ( F 2 ) の走査期間においては、 走査電極が 1、 2、 3、 -一 とな るに従い画素の透過光量が多く なつてゆく。 従って、 第 1、 第 2 フ レーム ( F l 、 F 2 ) における各走査電極の画素の透過光量を合計 するとすベて同じ透過光量となる。 その結果、 表示画面は輝度ムラ がなく なり均一な輝度となる。 また、 色を正確に制御できるので所 望の色を表示できる。
図 1 3 は図 6 と同じグラフを、 第 1 フ レーム ( F 1 ) 及び第 2 フ レーム ( F 2 ) について示した図である。 このグラフは走査電極が 8 0本である場合を示しており、 第 1 フ レームにおいては矢印 d n に示すように 1 本目の走査電極から 8 0本目の走査電極に順次駆動 電圧を印加し、 第 2 フ レームにおいては矢印 u pに示すように 8 0 本目の走査電極から 1 本目の走査電極に順次駆動電圧を印加してい る。 図 1 3 に示すように、 第 1 フ レームにおいては 1 本目から 8 0 本目の走査電極にゆく に従い、 画素の透過光量が少なく つてゆく。 一方、 第 2 フ レームにおいては 1 本目から 8 0本目の走査電極にゆ く に従い、 画素の透過光量が多く なつてゆく。 この間発光している 色は Rであり、 次に Gが発光するときに同じ駆動波形が印加される o
図 1 2 に示した第 2の実施形態では 1 つの色が発光している間に 2 回の書き込みを行っている。 しかし、 2回に限らず液晶の応答速 度に応じて書き込み回数を 4 回、 6 回、 2 N ( N 二自然数) 回と、 偶数回とすることができる。
また上記説明では、 第 1 フ レーム ( F 1 ) の走査期間、 即ち奇数 番目の走査期間においては 1 本目の走査電極から第 N本目の走査電 極の順に走査電圧を印加し、 第 2 フ レーム ( F 2 ) の走査期間、 即 ち偶数番目の走査期間においては N本目の走査電極から第 1 本目の 走査電極の順に走査電圧を印加している。 しかし、 走査電圧の印加 の順序を逆にしてもよい。
〔第 3 の実施形態〕 第 2の実施形態では、 1つの色が発光している期間 T Sに複数フ レーム分の駆動電圧波形を液晶に印加した。 しかし、 図 1 2に示し た駆動波形を用いて、 別の方法で前記課題を解決することができる o
図 1 4は本発明の第 3の実施形態を示した図である。 図 1 4 は、 図 1 2の各フ レームの走査電極駆動電圧 ( a ) と、 その時発光して いる色 (R、 G、 B ) を示したものである。 図 1 2に示されている 表示電極に印加される波形 (b ) 、 合成電圧波形 ( c ) 、 及び透過 率の波形 ( d ) は省略してあるが、 図 1 2 に示された波形と同じで ある。 第 3の実施の形態においては、 各フ レームの期間は 1 つの 色が発光する期間 T Sとほぼ同じになっており、 各フ レーム F 1 、 F 2、 F 3 に対応して順次 R、 G、 Bが発光する。 こ こで、 Rが発 光するフ レーム F 1 と F 4 に着目すると、 矢印 d nで示すように、 F 1 においては 1本目から 8 0本目の走査電極に順次駆動電圧を印 加し、 矢印 u pで示すように F 4 においては 8 0本目から 1本目の 走査電極に順次駆動電圧を印加する。
図 1 5 は上記のように駆動電圧を印加した場合の、 透過光量を示 した図である。 図 1 3 に示されたグラフは、 1 つの色 (例えば R ) が発光している間に 2 フ レーム分の駆動電圧を順序を変て走査電極 に印加した場合の透過光量を示している。 一方、 図 1 5に示された グラフは、 1つの色 (例えば R ) が発光している間に 1 フ レーム分 の駆動電圧が印加される。 しかし、 同じ色 (例えば R) については 、 1 回目の発光のフ レームと 2回目の発光のフ レームでは駆動電圧 が走査電極に印加される順序を矢印 d n及び u pに示すように変え ている。 従って、 1 回目の Rの発光フ レーム (F 1 ) と 2回目の R の発光フ レーム (F 2 ) 、 における各走査電極の画素の透過光量を 合計するとすベて同じ透過光量となり、 表示画面の輝度ムラがなく なり、 かつ所望の色を表示できる

Claims

請 求 の 範 囲
1 . 対向面にそれぞれ複数の走査電極と信号電極を有する一対の 基板間に反強誘電性液晶を挟持した反強誘電性液晶表示素子と互い に異なる複数の色の光を継時的に発光する光源を具備した反強誘電 性液晶ディ スプレイにおいて、
前記光源の 1 つの色の光が発光する間 (T S ) の走査期間が 2つ の期間に分かれており、 第 1 の期間 ( S C 1 ) は表示状態を決める 選択期間と該選択期間で選択した表示状態を保持する非選択期間を 有し、 残りの走査期間である第 2の走査期間 ( S C 2 ) は表示状態 を黒表示とする選択期間と該選択期間で選択した黒表示状態を保持 する非選択期間を有することを特徴とする反強誘電性液晶ディ スプ レィ。
2 . 前記反強誘電性液晶は、 第 1 の強誘電性状態、 第 1 の強誘電 性状態とは逆極性の電圧を印加した場合に強誘電性状態を示す第 2 の強誘電性状態、 及び反強誘電性状態を有し、 前記第 2の期間の選 択期間における走査電圧波形と信号電圧波形との合成電圧波形の電 圧値が、 前記反強誘電性液晶が第 1 も しく は第 2の強誘電状態に移 行する閾値電圧の値以下であることを特徴とする、 請求の範囲 1 に 記載の反強誘電性液晶ディ スプレイ。
3 . 前記第 2の期間に印加される信号電圧波形は、 常に黒表示用 信号電圧波形に設定されていることを特徴とする、 請求の範囲 1 に 記載の反強誘電性液晶ディ スプレイ。
4 . 前記第 1 の期間と第 2の期間の長さがほぼ等しいことを特徴 とする、 請求の範囲 1 から 3のいずれか 1 つに記載の反強誘電性液 晶ディ スプレイ。
5 . 前記第 1 の期間が前記走査期間の中間に位置することを特徴 とする、 請求の範囲 1 から 3のいずれか 1 つに記載の反強誘電性液 晶ディ スプレイ。
6 . 対向面に N本の走査電極と M本の信号電極を有する一対の基 板間に反強誘電性液晶を挟持した反強誘電性液晶表示素子と互いに 異なる複数の色の光を継時的に発光する光源を具備する反強誘電性 液晶ディ スプレイにおいて、
前記光源の 1 つの色の光が発光する間 (T S ) に偶数の走査期間 を有し、 該走査期間のうち奇数番目の走査期間においては走査電極 を 1 本目から N本目の方向に走査する正方向走査を行い、 偶数番目 の走査期間においては走査電極を N本目から 1 本目の方向に走査す る逆方向走査を行うように構成したことを特徴とする反強誘電性液 晶ディ スプレイ。
7 . 前記奇数番目の走査期間においては走査電極を N本目から 1 本目の方向に走査する逆方向走査を行い、 前記偶数番目の走査期間 においては走査電極を 1 本目から N本目の方向に走査する正方向走 査を行うように構成したことを特徴とする、 請求の範囲 6 に記載の 反強誘電性液晶ディ スプレイ。
8 . 対向面に N本の走査電極と M本の信号電極を有する一対の基 板間に反強誘電性液晶を挟持した反強誘電性液晶表示素子と、 互い に異なる複数の色の光を継時的に発光する光源とを具備する反強誘 電性液晶ディ スプレイにおいて、
前記光源の 1 つの色の光が発光する間 (T S ) に走査電極を 1 本 目から N本目の方向に走査する正方向走査を行い、 次に同じ色の光 が発光する間 (T S ) に走査電極を N本目から 1 本目の方向に走査 する逆方向走査を行い、 前記正方向走査と逆方向走査を交互に繰り 返すよう構成したことを特徴とする反強誘電性液晶ディ スプレイ。
9 . 前記正方向走査の回数と、 前記逆方向走査の回数が同じであ ることを特徴とする、 請求項 8記載の反強誘電性液晶ディ スプレイ o
1 0 . 対向面にそれぞれ複数の走査電極と信号電極を有する一対 の基板間に反強誘電性液晶を挟持した反強誘電性液晶表示素子と互 いに異なる複数の色の光を継時的に発光する光源を具備した反強誘 電性液晶ディ スプレイの駆動方法であって、
前記光源の 1 つの色の光が発光する間 (T S ) の走査期間を 2つ の期間に分け、 選択期間と該選択期間で選択した表示状態を保持す る非選択期間を有する第 1 の期間 ( S C 1 ) で表示状態を決め、 残 りの走査期間である第 2 の期間 ( S C 2 ) において表示状態を黒表 示とすることを特徴とする反強誘電性液晶ディ スプレイの駆動方法
1 1 . 前記反強誘電性液晶は、 第 1 の強誘電性状態、 第 1 の強誘 電性状態とは逆極性の電圧を印加した場合に強誘電性状態を示す第 2 の強誘電性状態、 及び反強誘電性状態を有し、 前記第 2 の期間の 選択期間における走査電圧波形と信号電圧波形との合成電圧波形の 電圧値が、 前記反強誘電性液晶が第 1 も しく は第 2 の強誘電状態に 移行する閾値電圧の値以下であることを特徴とする、 請求項 1 0記 載の反強誘電性液晶ディ スプレイの駆動方法。
1 2 . 前記第 2の期間に印加される信号側電圧波形は、 常に黒表 示用信号電圧波形に設定されていることを特徴とする、 請求項 1 0 記載の反強誘電性液晶ディ スプレイの駆動方法。
1 3 . 前記第 1 の期間と第 2の期間の長さがほぼ等しいことを特 徴とする、 請求項 1 0から 1 2のいずれか 1 つに記載の反強誘電性 液晶ディ スプレイの駆動方法。
1 4 . 対向面に N本の走査電極と M本の信号電極を有する一対の 基板間に反強誘電性液晶を挟持した反強誘電性液晶表示素子と、 互 いに異なる複数の色の光を継時的に発光する光源を具備した反強誘 電性液晶ディ スプレイの駆動方法であって、
前記光源の 1 つの色の光が発光する間 (T S ) に偶数回走査し、 奇数番目の走査期間においては走査電極を 1 本目から N本目の方向 に走査する正方向走査を行い、 偶数番目の走査期間においては走査 電極を N本目から 1 本目の方向に走査する逆方向走査を行う ことを 特徴とする反強誘電性液晶ディ スプレイの駆動方法。
1 5 . 前記奇数番目の走査期間においては走査電極を N本目から 1 本目の方向に走査する逆方向走査を行い、 前記偶数番目の走査期 間においては走査電極を 1 本目から N本目の方向に走査する逆方向 走査を行う ことを特徴とする、 請求の範囲 1 4 に記載の反強誘電性 液晶ディ スプレイの駆動方法。
1 6 . 対向面に N本の走査電極と M本の信号電極を有する一対の 基板間に反強誘電性液晶を挟持した反強誘電性液晶表示素子と、 互 いに異なる複数の色の光を継時的に発光する光源とを具備した反強 誘電性液晶ディ スプレイの駆動方法であって、
前記光源の 1 つの色の光が発光する間 (T S ) に走査電極を 1 本 目から N本目の方向に走査する正方向走査を行い、 次に同じ色の光 が発光する間 (T S ) に走査電極を N本目から 1 本目の方向に走査 する逆方向走査を行い、 前記正方向走査と逆方向走査を交互に繰り 返すことを特徴とする反強誘電性液晶ディ スプレイの駆動方法。
1 7 . 前記正方向走査の回数と、 逆方向走査の回数が同じである ことを特徴とする、 請求項 1 6 に記載の反強誘電性液晶ディ スプレ ィの駆動方法。
