Abstract

The present invention relates to inorganic particles comprising at least two chemical elements in a predefined and analytically identifiable ratio. These particles are used as a marking means incorporated into or applied onto any desired article. They provide a high security potential against counterfeiting since the analysis depend on a combination of spatial as well as of chemical information. In a first step the information containing particle has to be localized by scanning electron microscopy and in a second step the ratio of elements is analysed using energy- or wavelength-dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM/EDX).

Claims

1. Use of at least one predefined ratio of at least two chemical elements being comprised in at least one type of inorganic particles, wherein said predefined ratio represents a code or part of a code as a marking characteristic.
2. Use of particles according to claim 1 wherein the particle is localized by scanning electron microscopy.
3. Use of particles according to claim 2 wherein said inorganic particle is localized under backscattered electron detection.
4. Use of particles according to one of claims 1 to 3 wherein said ratio of chemical elements is analysed by energy- or wavelength-dispersive X-ray analysis, on a scanning electron microscope.
5. Use of particles according to one of the claims 1 to 4 , wherein the volume of each individual particle is substantially comprised within the range of between 0.01 μm to 10000 μm3, preferably within the range of between 0.1 μm3 to 1000 μm3, more preferably within the range of between 1 μm3 to 100 μm3.
6. Use of particles according to one of the claims 1 to 5 wherein said inorganic particles comprise said chemical elements in non-stoichiometric proportions.
7. Use of particles according to one of claims 1 to 5 wherein said inorganic particles consist of chemical elements in a stoichiometric composition. - 21 -
8. Use of particles according to one of the claims 6 or 7 wherein said particle is crystalline.
9. Use of particles according to claim 8 wherein said crystalline particle is selected from the group consisting of crystals with garnet-, spinel-, perovskite-, zircon- structures .
10. Use of particles according to claim 8 wherein said crystalline particle is selected from the group of oxysul- fides of rare-earth elements and/or yttrium.
11. Use of particles according to claim 6 wherein said particles are amorphous or glassy.
12. Use of particles according to claim 6 wherein said particles are of a metal alloy.
13. Use of particles according to any of the preceding claims wherein said particles additionally have one or more of the following properties: luminescence, magnetism, IR-absorption, radio-frequency and/or microwave resonance.
14. Use of particles according to any of the preceding claims for marking security documents.
15. Coating composition and/or printing ink and/or paper and/or security foil and/or card and/or fibre comprising particles according to any of the preceding claims in amounts ranging from 0.0001% to 10% preferably 0.001% to 1% and more preferably 0.01% to 0.1% by weight of the total weight of the overall composition or material to which it is added. - 22 -
16. Method for marking an article, comprising the steps of
(a) providing at least one marking having an analytically identifiable characteristic, said marking comprising at least one type of inorganic particles having at least two chemical elements in a predefined non-stoichiometric and/or stoichiometric ratio, wherein the predefined ratio of said chemical elements in said particle represents a code or part of a code as the marking characteristic,
(b) incorporating the inorganic particles of step (a) into a coating composition, preferably printing ink,
(c) optionally incorporating one or more camouflaging compounds comprising at least one of the chemical elements being comprised in the inorganic particles incorporated in step (b),
(d) applying the coating composition, preferably printing ink of step (b) or (c) to a substrate.
17. Method for marking and identifying an article, comprising the steps of
(a) providing at least one marking having an analytically identifiable characteristic, said marking comprising at least one type of inorganic particles having at least two chemical elements in a predefined non-stoichiometric and/or stoichiometric ratio, wherein the predefined ratio of said chemical elements in said particle represents a code or part of a code as the marking characteristic,
(b) incorporating the inorganic particles of step (a) into a coating composition, preferably printing ink,
(c) optionally incorporating one or more camouflaging compounds comprising at least one of the chemical elements being comprised in the inorganic particles incorporated in step (b); - 23 -
(d) applying the coating composition, preferably printing ink of step (b) or (c) to an article,
(e) localizing the position of at least one of said inorganic particles provided in (a) within the applied coating composition and/or printing ink obtained in step (d) , preferably by scanning electron microscopy,
(f) analysing the ratio of the chemical elements of each of the inorganic particles localized in step (e), preferably by energy- or wavelength-dispersive X-ray analysis, on the scanning electron microscope.
18. Method for marking and identifying an article, comprising the steps of
(a) providing at least one marking having an analytically identifiable characteristic, said marking comprising at least one type of inorganic particles having at least two chemical elements in a predefined non-stoichiometric and/or stoichiometric ratio, wherein the predefined ratio of said chemical elements in said particle represents a code or part of a code as the marking characteristic,
(b) incorporating the inorganic particles obtained in step (a) into at least one of the materials used for the production of said article, security foil, paper, card, fibre;
(c) optionally incorporating one or more camouflaging compounds comprising at least one of the chemical elements being comprised in the inorganic particles incorporated in step (b);
(d) localizing the position of at least one of each type of said inorganic particles within the shaped article, paper, security foil, card or fibre, preferably by scanning electron microscopy,
(e) analysing the ratio of the chemical elements of each - 24 -
of the inorganic particles localized in step (d), preferably by energy- or wavelength-dispersive X-ray analysis, on the scanning electron microscope.
19. Method according to claim 16 to 18 wherein said inorganic particle is localized using backscattered electron detection.
20. Method according to one of the claims 16 to 19 characterized in that the volume of the individual particles is substantially comprised within the range of between 0.01 μm3 to 10000 μm3, preferably within the range of between 0.1 μm3 to 1000 μm3, more preferably within the range of between 1 μm3 to 100 μm3.
21. Security document, preferably made from paper, card or security foil comprising marking means produced according to the method of claim 16 to 20.
22. Article comprising a marking having an analytically identifiable characteristic, said marking comprising at least one type of inorganic particles comprising at least two chemical elements in a predefined ratio, characterized in that the predefined ratio of said chemical elements represents a code or part of a code as characteristic of said marking.
23. Article according to claim 22 characterized in that the marking is comprised in a layer on said article.
