Abstract

The present invention is a novel and improved method and apparatus for controlling the transmission power in a closed loop power control system. In the present invention, the power control commands that are punctured into the forward link traffic signal are used to determine the sufficiency of the forward link traffic signal. The power control commands are used because their energy does not vary with the data rate of the traffic channel. The drawback of using the power control commands alone to determine the sufficiency of the traffic channel transmission energy is that there are not a lot of power control commands and thus they are susceptible to the influence of noise on the traffic channel. This situation is further complicated because the power control commands cannot simply be averaged together because they may have been transmitted at different energy due to the response to power control commands from the mobile station. This situation is even further complicated because power control commands transmitted from the mobile station may be received incorrectly by the base station. The present invention provides methods of averaging the power control bit energies to provide an effective and robust means of estimation signal quality of a received CDMA signal.
