Abstract

A system and method is disclosed for creating and trading ad hoc baskets of fungible goods such as securities. The invention permits users to purchase groups of species of fungible goods by simply inputting the target amount to invest and a list of such species such as stock symbols (76). The invention then effectively instantaneously (from the user's perspective) seeks out the current trading price (80) for each species (e.g. current stock trading price) and computes the number of units (e.g. shares) of each species to be purchased (77) in order to invest a total amount approaching as close as possible (but no greater than) the total target investment in the particular basket of species of fungible goods (e.g. stocks) specified. A means for dynamically 'balancing' and 'rebalancing' a basket is also disclosed which permits the user to change the weight applied to each species when determining the number of units (shares) to be traded (98).
