Description

SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR PROVIDING VEHICLE DIAGNOSTIC/REPARING INFORMATION USING INTERNET SERVICE
BASED
TECHNICAL FIELD
The present invention relates to the device to provide automobile diagnosis/repair information using the Internet service and the method therefor. In particular, the present invention's system and method connects a provider of information on automobile maintenance and repair through the Internet, transmits the automobile status information to the said information provider, and receives from the said information provider the information on the diagnosis of the automobile status and the relevant repair method, so that appropriate measures may be taken.
BACKGROUND ART
Automobiles in these days generally have equipment which conducts self- diagnosis of the status of automobiles in motion. As a result of such self-diagnosis, people may obtain the engine status information, automatic transmission control status information, break control information, etc. The said automobile status information is stored in the control equipment of an automobile, such as the engine control equipment or transmission control equipment, or in a separate memory means, the self-diagnosis unit. The information regarding the automobile's status, stored in such control equipment, is used for the automobile maintenance and repair.
Generally, an automobile repair shop connects the Hi Scanner, which stores the examination data, vehicle type data and etc. required for automobile diagnosis, to an automobile and determines whether there is any problem in an automobile by reading the stored automobile status information. A motor mechanic changes the relevant parts or conducts repairs based upon the result of the diagnosis.
In order to have the automobile repaired using the stored automobile status information, a user must take the automobile to a repair shop having the specialized equipment for capturing information such as the Hi Scanner. Furthermore, in order to conduct a correct diagnosis of the abnormality of an automobile or the troubled part of the automobile using the captured information, expert knowledge in connection with the captured information is required. If a new type of automobile is out on the market, the automobile repair shop must purchase the expensive diagnosis equipment, new Hi Scanner, or upgrade the old Hi Scanner with the relevant data because the preexisting Hi Scanner would not have the diagnostic data regarding the new automobile. Expenses will be incurred for such purchase or upgrading of the Hi Scanner and such expenses will result in the increase of the repair charges. Moreover, it will take a long time to upgrade the relevant data and to apply such data to the diagnosis and repair of automobiles. Additionally, because the data are different for each car type, expert knowledge is required for the use of the said scanner.
Recently, the number of Internet sites providing information on the automobile trouble diagnosis is rapidly increasing. A driver clicks the item corresponding to the trouble detected in his automobile from various diagnosis items displayed on the screen of an Internet site or inputs the trouble symptoms and receives the relevant opinion or measures to be taken by e-mail or facsimile.
In order to have one's automobile's status diagnosed through these Internet sites, the driver must have the exact knowledge on where in his car the trouble has occurred. Also, even with the information on the remedial measures sent from the Internet sites, a driver may not effectively take the relevant measures unless he has specialized knowledge on the automobile Thus, the usefulness of the information is limited

Now, the steps for diagnosing whether there is any abnormality in the automobile according to the present invention will be explained with references to Fig. 1 and Fig. 2.
For the diagnosis of the automobile's abnormality, the subject automobile is placed at a gas station, repair shop, automobile interior company, resting area, component sales business or other automobile-related business which is equipped with the user system and the data conversion system connected to the said user system (10).
The data communication system is formed between the user system (10) and the automobile's engine control equipment, transmission control equipment or self-diagnosis unit through the connection of the said data conversion system (20) with the vehicle communication system (30) embedded in the automobile (STEP S101).
When the vehicle communication system (30) and the user system (10) is connected, the driver is connected to the information provision center system (40) through the Internet by the input on a touch panel, mouse or keyboard according to the information provided in the user system (10) (STEP S I 02). When the information provision center system (40) is connected to the Internet through the said user system, the user inputs his/her subscriber registration number and password. The transmission unit (12) of the said user system (10) sends a request for the service use authentication to the information provision center system (40) (STEP
S103). The information provision center system (40), upon receiving the authentication request, determines whether the user requesting the authentication is a registered subscriber and whether the inputted password concurs with the registered password through the DB search unit (45) by reviewing the subscription information stored in the database (STEP S104). If the user requesting the authentication is determined to be a registered subscriber, the authentication is granted to the user system (10) through the transmission unit (40). If the user is determined not to be a registered subscriber or if a wrong password was inputted, the message stating that the service may not be provided is sent to the user system (10).
If the use authentication is granted from the information provision center system (40), the user system (10) displays a message instructing the user to select the desired service item. The user selects the desired service item from the information displayed on the screen of the user system (10) by the input on the touch screen, mouse or keyboard (STEP SI 05).
If the service item selected by the user is determined to be the request for the automobile trouble diagnosis (STEP SI 06), the main processor in the user system (10) displays a message on the screen requesting that a specific item be selected. The user inputs the specific item to be diagnosed from the displayed screen (STEP SI 07). The user system (10) makes the user system (10)'s communication method compatible with the communication method of the vehicle communication system (30) through the data conversion system (20) and then requests the information on the automobile's status to be diagnosed (STEP SI 08).
In particular, if it is detected that a specific item for the automobile diagnosis has been inputted, the main processor of the user system (10) encrypts the signal requesting the automobile's diagnosis through the encryption unit (15) based upon the selected item data. The encrypted signal is processed into packets and transmitted to the data conversion system (20) through the transmission unit (12).
The processor in the data conversion system (20) decrypts through the encryption unit (22) the diagnosis request signal of the user system (10) detected at the reception unit (25) and analyses the signal. Then, the signal is processed to become signal for the K-line or L-line communication method through the RS-232 conversion unit (21) so that the serial communication may be conducted.
The signal processed by the RS-232 conversion unit (21) is transmitted to the vehicle communication system (30) through the transmission unit (24). The vehicle communication system (30) which received the said signal accesses the data regarding the automobile status stored in the engine control equipment, transmission control equipment or self-diagnosis unit and transmits such data to the data conversion system (20) by the K-line or L-line communication method.
The processor in the data conversion system (20) encrypts through the encryption unit (22) the said automobile status information data received at the reception unit (25). The said encrypted data is processed in the form of packets through the packet processing unit (23) and transmitted to the user system (10) through the transmission unit (24).
The processor in the user system (10) decrypts through the encryption unit (15) the automobile status information received as encrypted packet data through the data conversion system (20). The said user system (10) processes the decrypted data in the form required for the transmission to the data provision center system (40) and transmits such data to the information provision center system (40) through the transmission unit (12) after encrypting the data and the message requesting the diagnosis.
The processor of the information provision center system (40) goes into the diagnosis service mode according to the diagnosis request signal from the user system (10). In the diagnosis service mode, the automobile status information is analyzed through the various service data stored in the database. Then, the relevant diagnosis result/repair method information regarding the automobile is extracted and transmitted to the user system (10) (STEP S 109-STEP S I 10). The processor in the user system (10) decrypts through the encryption unit the diagnosis result/repair method information received from the information provision center system and displays the relevant information on the screen or prints it through the printer (STEP S i l l).
Not only may the present invention diagnose the automobile's status, but also can it confirm the automobile's diagnosis history for a certain period of time. In the state where the authentication was granted from the said information provision center system (40), if the service item selected by the user is determined to be the signal for reviewing the automobile diagnosis history for a certain period of time (STEP S 121), the processor of the user system (10) displays a message requesting that the user input a period for which the relevant data will be retrieved (STEP S 122). When the period is selected by the user and the input of such period is detected, the user system (10) encrypts the relevant signal through the encryption unit (15) and transmits such signal to the information provision center system (40) which is connected through the Internet.
The processor of the information provision center system (40) analyzes the signal requesting the review of the automobile diagnosis history through the reception unit (41) and then extracts the automobile diagnosis history corresponding to the relevant user stored in the database by controlling the DB search unit (45). The extracted information is transmitted to the user system (10) through the transmission unit (42). The processor of the user system (10) decrypts through the encryption unit (15) the user's automobile diagnosis history information which was provided by the information provision center system (40) to the reception unit (11). Then, the processor displays it on the screen or prints it out (STEP S123).
For the review of the automobile's diagnosis history for a certain period of time as described above, the automobile itself is not required to be connected to the user system (10). Only with the user's subscription information and password, the authentication may be granted from the information provision center system (40) and thus the automobile diagnosis history service may be provided.
On the other hand, the present invention may cause the trouble diagnosis result/repair method information or the automobile diagnosis history information provided by the information provision center system (40) to be transmitted to the reception place where the user desires to receive such information. If the user wishes to receive the result of the requested service at a terminal designated by the user, such as the user's computer, facsimile, mobile phone or wired phone, etc., the user selects the reception place change service through the user system (10) in the state where the authentication was granted from the information provision center system (40). If it is determined that the reception place change service has been selected, the user system (10)'s processor displays a message on the screen requesting that the user input the desired time and the terminal number for the reception of the information (STEP S131). The user inputs the terminal number and the time desired for the reception of the information through the displayed screen. The inputted terminal number and the desired reception time are transmitted to the information provision center system (40) through the reception conversion unit (14). The processor of the information provision center system (40) registers the reception terminal number and desired reception time through the reception reservation unit (44) and transmits the information requested by the user at the said desired reception time to the desired terminal (STEP SI 32).
As explained above, the present invention may have an automobile conveniently diagnosed from a remote place through the on-line Internet connection and have the diagnosis result and repair method transmitted real time. Therefore, the automobile's status may be diagnosed conveniently and expeditiously. Furthermore, according to the present invention, ordinary drivers without any specialized knowledge may obtain the diagnosis of the automobile and repair method conveniently. Consequently, the expenses for the automobile maintenance and repair may be reduced.
Additionally, because the present invention uses the Internet, the information on the relevant vehicle may easily be obtained without any restrictions concerning the region or nation, etc.
Also, in the case that any new type automobile is out on the market, the information concerning such new type automobile may be obtained without great economic burden because only the information provision center system needs to be upgraded for the relevant new type automobile.
Moreover, because the diagnosis result and repair method may be transmitted to the terminal at the desired place at the desired reception time, the present invention provides further convenience to the user.
