Abstract

The invention addresses the demand for enhanced information capacity by increasing the number of fibers per cable. In one embodiment, the cable (121) includes flexible flat multiple-fiber jackets (122) which can move freely within the cable. The cable is preferably divided into at least two cells in order to maintain structural strength while allowing the cable to bend only along a desired direction. Multiple-fiber connectors suitable for the jackets, and arrangements for coupling pumping light into multiple fibers for amplification, are also described.
