Abstract

The invention is a cape (5) that calms dogs (1) who are excessively afraid of thunderstorms and a method of applying same. The key to the invention is an electrically conductive lining that lays upon the dog’s fur discharging static and shielding the dog (1) from charge buildup prior to and during a thunderstorm.

Description

TITLE: CAPE FOR CALMING DOGS WHO ARE AFRAID OF THUNDERSTORMS
DESCRIPTION
The invention is a cape and method of applying same to give relief to dogs who are excessively afraid of thunderstorms. The DRAWING shows the cape on a dog f 1 J and a layout of the patternf 5
The cape consists of two layers stitched together 6 J . The outer layer is a simple cotton- polyester material whose function is to hold the lining in place. The inner layer, and key to this invention, is the metallic material which discharges the dog's fur and shields the dog from the static charge buildup which accompanies a thunderstorm.
The coat is placed on the dog when the dog shows the first sign of agitation due to an oncoming electrical storm. The strap/ 3 j are crossed under the belly and tied in a knot 4 Jon top to allow for adjustment and to make it comfortable to wear. The neck seam f 2 J may also be adjustable to suit various dog sizes. The dog is allowed to wear the cape until all electrical activity related to the storm has passed. Some learning is involved as it may take two to three storms before the dog gets maximum benefit.

Claims

1. A garment for calming dogs that are afraid of thunderstorms comprising: An outer layer of non-static material and an inner lining of electrically conductive material, preferably tissue lame containing at least 51% metallic thread, that lays against the body of the dog so as to discharge the dog's fur and shield from static charge buildup for the duration of the thunderstorm, thus keeping the dog calm.
2. A method of calming dogs that are afraid of thunderstorms comprising: Providing an electrically conductive garment to be worn by a dog composed of an inner lining of electrically conductive material, preferably tissue lame containing at least 51% metallic thread, an outer non- static material, and a means for fastening the garment around the torso of said dog; and wherein the electrically conductive garment covers the torso of the dog, allowing the dog to continue to perform basic functions.
The coat is to be placed on the dog as soon as an increase in agitation of the dog is noticed due to an approaching thunderstorm placing electrically conductive garment on and around the torso of the dog such that inner lining of electrically conductive material is against the body of the dog so as to discharge any build up of static electricity in the dog's fur and to shield from static charge for the duration of the thunderstorm, thus keeping the dog calm..
